EA explains why they added women's teams to FIFA

GamesBeat: I’m curious about small things and big things that come out of this “gamers first” strategy. If you look at adding women to FIFA, what is the gamers first goal there? How do you apply that to trying to decide something like that?

Wilson: That one’s pretty easy. As we start looking at the amount of players in our FIFA world who are girls and women, as we look at the amount of girls playing soccer—particularly in this country, by the way. **There are more girls playing soccer than there are guys. We had this huge audience playing our game who didn’t feel they were represented inside the game. We went after that. We’ll continue to do that. ** 

GamesBeat: That doesn’t feel risky or progressive. It feels like good business. Some people reacted negatively, and you could worry about those people, or you could worry about building new audiences.

Having gone and read a great deal and had our community teams looking at that, that was such a marginal element of the overall feedback—more power to Peter for taking it on and dealing with that individual, but in all honesty, I think that only made it bigger than it was overall.

It was brought up a page ago that the women didn’t deserve a spot, you tried arguing this point and I explained that the women didn’t sell enough to justify a placement. Believe it or not some people believe in a meritocracy and don’t think women should just get a hand out because “vagina.” The proper response is asking “why include players from a division that doesn’t sell or pull in viewers.”

Well first off it’s pretty much known at this point that razor doesn’t address points and evidence when making a argument so I personally wouldn’t try to defend someone like that. Unlike him though I can actually address your post by engaging the points made. First off the points you provided are somewhat contradicted by the link affinity provided. It would seem the inclusion of women was for no other reason then for female fans to feel represented. In that link there was a mention that there is more female soccer players then male soccer players in some places, which created a need to appeal to this audience. However note there isn’t a mention that women’s professional soccer sells as much or gets as most exposure as the men, or that it even sells nearly as much. In other words the decision to include women was not out of the merit of women’s soccer but instead just to appeal to female fans…which goes back to the initial point razor was trying dispute. The fact that women’s games have drawn in 30% more people in the link you provided is moot given that the stated cause for including women was just to appeal to female fans who wanted to see women represented. Therefore when it’s all said and done, women were included for no other reason then to pander to female fans…which was precisely the point people argued for in the first page. We’ve essentially done a very roundabout 180 to come to the conclusion stated before…I’m not exactly sure what’s the controversy in saying something confirmed by the people who were responsible for the women’s placement in the game.

I am actually really excited about them adding female teams. Not only is it a progressive movement towards equality but I feel like it is Soccer/Football as a whole becoming more popular and accepted.
