FGD Lounge: for general fighting game discussions that aren't thread worthy

PC vs Console is entirely dependent on lifestyle. Right now I’m at a crux: I’d like to host more sessions but I also have a computer that can run the games. Seems like a weird statement but: my computer is to do computerish things, not gaming. Because of that its in the office as opposed to the living room.

If I’d invested in a console, it would be in the living room where it is accessible to everybody. Instead I have the computer in a place where its awkward for people. There’s also the issue of PCs not being able to handle plugging and unplugging things nicely (at least this is the case for XRD where I have to have the stick connected before I open the program).

Consoles require way less maintenance on TOs so its a bit better for’em. If you’re single and don’t give a shit about people coming over to play, PC is probably the better investment.

Wanna play the best home port of Fatal Fury in 1991? That’ll be $650. That’s about $1,150 today.

Wrong thread nvm

fuck that neo-geo home console. shit was expensive af but the games were mind-blowing at the time, not to mention the real arcade experience at home. “100 mega shock! neo-geo!” heeheehee, i feel old af lololol

Can someone ban this fool already?

Edit: Finally. Thanks.

PC version is pretty nice though. Instead of having hauling a console and a tv and a stick to go to a meet up, you could just bring a lap top and a stick. That’s a lot less stuff to carry around.

Since Darkstalkers has gone quieter than a negative edge, I wanted to run an idea by the thread. What if Capcom were to pull their heads out of their asses and make a new Darkstalkers, rebooted like large parts of SFV’s system?
-Integrate CFN to make it a multipurpose Capcom fighting game platform
-Make it for PS4 (PC optional, but recommended b/c Fightcade players are there)
As long as it is a 2D/2.5D game with monsters and chain combos, I would call it Darkstalkers. Seeing what they’ve done with SFV, I can only imagine what they might do with the cast!

Spoiler

-Morrigan, Demitri, Felicia, and Hsien-Ko are guaranteed to return and won’t change much
-Talbain can take after Valkenhyn from the Blazblue series, shifting between his human martial artist form and werewolf state
-Anakaris revolves around placing them in a “cursed” state (probably changed from the Darkstalkers 2/3 version)
-Victor has lots of armored moves
-Rikuo turns himself to water, enabling new movement and attack options
-Sasquatch as a brute-force-beast, with ice attacks he can confirm off of
-Donovan as a quasi-puppetmaster with his sword and summons
-B.B. Hood fires bullets everywhere (MvC3 Deadpool/Injustice’s Deathstroke)

The question is how the gameplay would change. SFV showed that they could make a SF game that feels like the old ones without all the stuff that was in IV, but can they do something similar for Vampire (but then again, considering that they have Woshige working for them now)?

Actually, Woshige could be really good for this. Vampire Savior is like a distant relative of the anime fighter subgenre, and was actually an influence in the original Guilty Gear’s creation. As I said, the main thing that makes Darkstalkers what it is would be the chain combo system, so that is an absolute must. After that, they have a lot more room to build up the new game. They may make EX moves (basically supers in that game, as ES worked like Street Fighter’s EX moves) cost 3 bars to be flashier and differentiate them from supers a bit more. Dark Force would probably return with its own gauge like V-Trigger. Game speed would likely get slowed down from Turbo 3 Vampire Savior, to something around if not slightly faster than Turbo 2 Vampire Hunter. Pursuits wound up being a big part of Savior because they provided you with a guaranteed position for set play, but may or may not return depending on how aggressive the game is intended to be.

Would Darkstalkers vs Samurai Shodown be dope?

I don’t think the gameplay styles would match.

Now, give me Darkstalkers vs. Guilty Gear…

At least nobody’s suggested Darkstalkers vs MK

does guilty gear have a lot of freedom in its movement options? I guess a good comparison would be mvc 3. Kind of interested in a game similar to marvel but i hear that the ps3 version is not that good.

Skullgirls is probably the closest thing you’ll find to Marvel. Guilty Gear does have air dashing too, and one character can dash in 8 directions if that’s what you’re into.

You heard the PS3 version of Marvel isn’t good, or are you talking about the PS3 version of Guilty Gear Xrd? Xrd on PS3 is great, but it obviously isn’t going to match the PS4 or PC when it comes to its graphical capabilities. It’s an amazing game with decent netcode, though it is sort of dead online. But the next game is coming out in June, and there will no doubt be more players if you pick that up.

Forgive me if this is covered elsewhere.

I’m organizing a tournament soon at a private venue (a bar/barn on my property). We’re holding a casual Soul Calibur V for some local players, I’m expecting 8-12 to show up to play and 45-60 people in total (we’re also celebrating a birthday).

I’m looking for any advice you guys can give me as far as running a tournament and if I should know anything particular about that game. I know some of the roster is banned in most tournaments I’ve seen and I’m not going to be allowing custom characters either. Also, since we’re using the Xbox 360 I’ve asked that all players bring a wired controller/arcade stick but I’ll have some cables on hand in case someone shows up with a wireless one.

I’m going to be using a gaming monitor (BenQ, forget which model but it’s 144hz) or my 32-inch LCD HDTV with minimal lag (that I can detect anyway) for the participants to play on. I’ve got an HDMI splitter which I will be using to also display the fights on our projector for the spectators and to send the video/audio to my internal capture card on my PC. I was going to stream this tournament but begin our first one I’m thinking I’m just going to record it and upload it in full to youtube later, after I’ve hosted a few tournaments I’ll look into the whole streaming thing.

Since I have my own private venue I’m allowing consumption of alcohol on premises plus people are allowed to smoke inside. My venue is located between Danville, Virginia and Greensboro, NC so I’m hoping that in time I may attract some regulars from those cities to drive in and play. We’re also going to be switching the games up every time we host a tournament. We’ll probably do a King of Fighters game or Street Fighter 4/5 for our next one. We just picked SCV this time because we’re all been playing it as of late.

I’d appreciate any advice y’all can give…I’m going to be drawing up my rules over the next day or two. Here are some things I have in mind though:

  • Each player will pay in $10 towards the pot.
  • Winner takes home entire pot minus $10, that left over $10 goes to second place (they get their entry fee back).
  • People that aren’t playing get in for free and are allowed to BYOB.
  • I have one of those bingo things where you put in balls with numbers on them, spin them, and a random ball/number comes out. I plan on seeding my bracket this way by having the players draw numbers.
  • I want to run a double elimination bracket.
  • I plan on running the game at 720p resolution.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread for this. I looked around a little and didn’t want to put this in the tournament forum because I didn’t feel it was a large enough tournament to warrant its own thread. I appreciate any advice y’all can give.

Cables don’t make a 360 controller wired. They are only for charging the batteries.

You’re right, I was mistaken. I forgot I was using a controller that was already synced to the console when I did that ages ago.

Any place where I could post this and get a better responce? I’m going to be spending most of my day searching around the internet and here for tips on running a tournament. I want the first one to go off without a hitch so people have a good time. Of course with all the alcohol that is likely to be drunk at this party I doubt a few stoppages here and there would piss off the guests.

Do you think allowing wireless controllers for just an 8-12 man bracket would cause much trouble? I know I have three bringing arcade sticks and two others bringing wired controllers so the ones using wireless controllers would be an minority and if I’m honest probably would get eliminated early. The skill level at this tournament isn’t going to be that high for most coming so I’m expecting four people to dominate the others.

Well, with a small tournament, it’s easier to keep track of people using pad.

That said, you could just let everyone use the same couple of pads.

Hmmm I might do that, it’ll be wise to keep a couple around just in case someone forgets to bring theirs (or it dies). Just don’t want two guys fighting over the only spare arcade stick or getting sore because someone won’t let them use theirs.

This is going to be a learning experience for sure. I think I have a good idea of how to run things but I’d love to hear from anyone that’s organized or regularly runs a tournament. My main concern is that everyone has a good time and wants to come back.

I’m thinking about setting up another 360 and letting people that aren’t participating play on it. One of the guys coming will bring it over for me if I ask, will probably open up my console so everyone can play on the big screen/stage after the tournament is over as well. I hosted a party last summer where I set-up a console like this on a whim and it was a big hit with most of the party goers. We had people lined up for it and the pool table all night.

I’ve been playing since back when SF2 and MK1 hit the arcades but I’m not very good since I rarely play other good players outside of online play but I love watching close matches and playing good players when I get the chance. Get my ass kicked regularly on KoF98 on fightcade. I’m hoping that in the future maybe we can turn this into a weekly/monthly thing and draw in some good players. Since I have my own venue I can pretty much host these any time I want. We’ve been doing parties for two years now out here and we’ve had upwards to 120 attend so we have the room. The only downside is it costs us about $100+ a night to heat the place if we do things during the winter.
