Well I don’t completely agree with that. Now yes if one isn’t into the fighter genre they likely wont like most of the games. But a character design that is really striking, or a familiar face can get a person to try a fighter out. You know how many people got MVC3 just to play as Team Avenger? Or pick a character because they look cool or has a cool move? Or because they look sexy and tough? But you are right about your PC character example. because while such a character may attract a few people, at the end of the day the more outlandish, provocative, stylized and or unique looking characters are gonna attract more people than a PC plain Jane, or Average Joe would. And everyone knows it, but still want to act like that wouldn’t be the case.
Virtua Fighter is the epitome of this. Great fighting series with solid gameplay and beautiful animation. But their character’s a very forgettable. And the series suffered for it. The only characters from the VF series that I can immediately think of are Vanessa because she’s black, El Blaze because he reminds me of Rey Mysterio, and Duval because I think off her as a female T-1000. But overall the cast just seems so plain, uninspired and generic. And without a standout cast for the game to be identified by. The casual gamer isn’t gonna be bothered to remember it or want to try it.
I don’t see a character design drawing someone into the game if the game itself doesn’t appeal to them. It’s like all those people that praise the design of Zarya from Overwatch. How many of those people will actually play a class based competitive FPS? How many will like the class the character falls into?
Ive had to give up on a game that was the first game that I played with other people regularly. I have so much anxiety playing/practicing it that I just have to leave it behind. Mostly the anxiety comes from where I used to play it and the bad vibes that place had towards most new players. The online community for it is also a mess, full of troll players or jerks in the fb group for it. So even if I try to think of the game as a bigger thing from where I used to play it, theres not really a safe haven I can go to for it. SFV is coming out soon too, so its only gonna make the game even less relevant than before. Theres no other game I play that makes me nervous playing before I even press start.
Anyone else had to give up on a game because of the community/horrible personal experiences with it?
What game are you talking about? And on-line, no. Because I never take what people say on-line personally. Or I just mute them. Off-Line. The only game that made me never want to deal with them in person again was the Yugioh trading Card game community. Oh the stories I have of that game from when I use to play back in New York.
I’m having a community experience and a game experience: About the FGC folks at my city. We are not united at all, the splitting of groups are pretty clear: Some Marvel players, Marvel players from a town nearby, the SFIV people, the guys that stopped playing because they prefer older games (ST, Alpha series, MvC2…), the Smash guys (which is growing like a LOT here) and in all these groups there is a couple of guys that play Tekken, KOF and/or Guilty Gear or are in more than one group.
But we can’t gather everybody because we don’t have a big place for this. The tournament organizer from here decided to make a “bar with videogames” so the community would meet there, but they got robbed three times and he decided to sell the place. The bar barely made 3 months of life. We only meet everyone at a major tournament here (one of the country’s majors, organized by the guy I said earlier), and at the first time I didn’t knew that my city had a big group of players.
When we invite people to play, some of them are all like “oh, it’s far, your place is in the other side of the city” but in other state, where they have a weekly for Marvel and KOF, the players go across the city or come from towns nearby to play. I don’t get it. It’s hard for me because I don’t have a driver license yet, but I go by bus along with other guys, or one of them gives me and the others a ride and we split the gas’s cost when we need to bring more consoles/monitors. Why the others can’t do the same?
At game experience, I might be getting a problem. Marvel 3 is the game that got me into the FGC, the first one I’m being competitive at. Marvel is dying. as some might know, and the tournament organizer here said that he will drop Marvel next year. I mean, if he kills Marvel here it won’t affect the rest of the world, but it will break the game’s community in the country. I’m thinking about talking to him for next year I will try to do a Marvel side-event or something at his tournament. I’ve helped him before in 2013 and will help again this year by borrowing my console and games and being a judge at the stations, I think I can reach him and talk about what I want for the Marvel guys. Anyways, it was a bummer when he said that wouldn’t include Marvel for next year, but I hope that this year the game can bring some hype.
TLDR; Me complaining on my local FGC and local Marvel situation on SRK because I’m mad and got nothing better to do. lol
I’m telling ya man. Don’t underestimate the power of a well drawn and captivating character. People will try out games or classes they’d normally never bother with if the character is endearing enough. People really get attached to characters. Perfect example is the Mario Franchise. I know damn well I would have never bothered with a Tennis game or a golf game had the Mario characters not been involved.
Nah Id rather not say which game, dont want to cause a big storm, so I posted in here an dont its forum. Like, when one of the best players of it in the country is a total douche bag and doesnt tell you for a year why you cant go around his place, then screw your game and failing arcade.
The thing with your examples is that your using established characters. Of course something that’s already established will get it’s fanbase to try out different things if they are big enough fans. What I’m getting is that people believing a new character design that is pleasing to a particular demographic is all that’s needed to attract them to a game.
Anybody wanna play some fighting games? I got USFIV, SF3rd strike OE, Darkstalkers Ressurection, and Skullgirls. Yeah my fighting game collection isn’t much. Hell the only physical disc I got is USFIV. Gonna fix that once I get back to work.
Was Senor Footsies released? It sounds like a cool concept, but i dont know why you wouldnt just use any other fighting game and tell each other to only use short and roundhouse while playing.
