So I’ll be off to basic training + school in a couple of months, and I was wondering if the community is strong from inside the armed forces as it is outside, or am I gonna be seeing a bunch of button mashers as soon as I pull out my stick (assuming I can have that inside the barracks?)
I was at an airshow a few years ago. Mad Catz had a booth and they had SSF4 up. There was a sailor who knew what he was doing and played a decent Cody. I’m wondering if this was a rarity to see something like that.
It really depends what group of people you fall into with.
Some duty stations can be completely devoid of anyone who have even a passing interest in the FGC.
Then you have another group that more FGC than the whole of the GD sub forums.
I know two people from Tech Talk who are active duty service members and have interest in the FGC.
Keep in mind, there isn’t alot of opportunities for hardcore gaming on deployment.
When I served in the Marines, my go to game system was a Gameboy Color and later a GBA. It was kinda hard to drag a PlayStation with me (it was the late 90s and CRTs aren’t very good for portability).
The electronic maintenance guys had their own work trailer that needs constant power for their work has 120 volt AC 60hz outlets and can easily pack in a console and a small 13" CRT TV.
Not enough room to also pack in sticks, but this was the late 90s/Early 2000s for me so sticks aren’t popular then as they are now.
Things have gotten better since then, and all you really need is a reliable power outlet (more more rare than you think sometimes) and a decent gaming laptop.
What I did see plenty of is entertainment that does not require alot of power/electricity. Almost everyone plays spades as only one person needs a deck of playing cards.
You have your pockets of D&D players, again no power needed and only one person needs to have supplies.
