It’s weird that Fire Emblem has most of its games on handhelds and has little notoriety, but Advance Wars has all it’s games on handhelds and has much more notoriety.

Sadly they both seem to have nothing to do with SRPGs or TRPGs. Watered down children’s shooters.
La Pucelle is basically all the worst elements of NIS games (extremely grindy, full of obscure mechanics that aren’t worth the effort it takes to learn them, laiden with brick walls unless you’re actively breaking the game) without a lot of the polish and chances for the joy of experimentation that, say, Disgaea or Phantom Brave have.
Of course, being one of NIS’ oldest games brought over here (predating even Disgaea, although we got it later) it shouldn’t have been unexpected, but still the game was a soulless, joyless experience.
It’s still got it’s charms- it’s story is actually pretty good, and it also doesn’t have a lot of the utter BS the later NIS titles throw your way sometimes, but the actual game itself is almost Baby’s First TRPG in how deep the combat mechanics are yet throw a shit-ton of beef gates at you- there’s no way to actually ‘tactics’ past a lot of the game unless you’re just going for straight game-breaking (Stacking Braveheart onto Prier/Croix/beefy monster of your choice being the most ‘basic’ gamebreaker) since there isn’t access to any kind of real finesse. Either you’re going to grind or you’re going to cheat, and after playing games like FF Tactics, Vandal Hearts, Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre, and the Disgaeas, I found that really, really petty of the game.
FFT is pure, CRACK. I was going to fail some grade at school just because this game.

I keep forgetting to look at this thread, so I’m just going to make this semi-pointless post just to subscribe while Young Justice finishes up.
Just looking at this page, though, I have to say that I’ve never seen the appeal of Fire Emblem from what I’ve seen of it. I’ve heard quite a good things about Advance Wars, though, even before Ephidel’s testimonial.
Hmm…now that I think about it, I really should have at least one Tactics Orge game around here for like PSX that I never finished because I was so caught up in Final Fantasy Tactics; I still am.
Fire Emblem and Advance Wars are two completely different beasts and are meant to appeal to 2 different niches.
Advance Wars is more “strategic” but it’s designed to be. Your units and your enemy units are the same, so strategy is more important. Fire Emblem has a lot more variables (equipment, levels, supports, i.e. your typical RPG stuff) so proper management of your characters is just as important.
AW is much less random, so which one you prefer is based on your personal tastes. I like AW, but I love FE a lot more (well, most of the ones I’ve played) because I’m sucker for its stories, characters, and typical RPG shit.
Plus a lot of AW maps can be “solved”, like a chess puzzle. Which I think is fine, but FE is a lot more exciting (though at times, infuriating) for me BECAUSE of the random variables. No FE playthrough will be the same because in one playthrough a certain character may be godly but the next playthrough they may get screwed, forcing you to use someone else, changing your strategies.
Anyone here know anything about Disgaea: HoD for PS2? I’m breaking out into SRPG’s and I can’t seem to wrap my head around it. With Laharl being Lvl 10, I feel like I’m somewhat under equipped stat-wise. I tried the Item World and around the 10th floor I can’t keep up and get slaughtered.
In the debate of Advance Wars vs Fire Emblem, I can honestly say I cater to both games. As I mentioned, FE is a more statistical game and I guess that’s something I would probably choose if I had to pick one. If there was any faults in Fire Emblem the first would have to be the RNG system. This system determines everything in your playthrough, EVERYTHING. Level ups, Hit %, Crit Rates, more times than not the RNG will work against you. There was only a handful of my playthroughs where some character got “RNG blessed” in a specific trait. To be frank, I shouldn’t be getting hit with criticals from an enemy that’s only factored at 1% or hit by enemies with a hit rate of less than 30%. I’ve actually been hit by enemies in FE with a hit rate of 10% :wtf:
Another problem is defensive maps in FE, more notably 7. Most of them are poorly designed, which to my belief is just another way of fustrating the player (even moreso on harder settings). Some are way too small to amount any sort of real defensive strategy, others are just loaded with a bunch of enemies way too early in the game and you won’t have enough meatsheilds to guard certain routes.
Lastly, I’m unsure why IntS feels the need to add desert maps to this series. They just feel so…unnecessary. I find it odd how magic units are suppose to have no penalty restrictions in sand, yet you wouldn’t want to send a magic unit out charging alone in the first place.
FFT is the only tactical RPG that I really enjoyed, I kept trying other ones but I just can’t get into them, probably because I don’t put enough time to into them or because their storyline doesn’t have a serious tone like FFT. Nostalgia is also a factor as its the first FF game I bought.
FFTa was alright, I just wish it didn’t restrict you with dumb rules (maybe make that the hard mode)
I absolutely loved FFT. It’s been over 10 years since I first played it and I still can play through it and love every moment (just did so like last month). I tried FFTa and, as RoGE said, it was alright, but nothing great. The story felt weaker to me as well.
On a related note, you all might be interested in this. It’s a kickstarter page for a new tactical RPG for PC that is being developed. Speaking of FFT, how’s the ipad version? Was thinking about getting it since I’ve never played it. Love Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Tactics Orge on the gba, and even enjoyed FFTA. Yes, I’m one of the few that liked that game. Not a big fan of Disgaea.

Speaking of TO, I started the Palace of the Dead. I don’t know how deep it goes this time, but it’s looking like there aren’t a bunch of filler battles mixed in with story battles this time.
One thing I don’t like about TO is how you get a new unit, and they level down to your class level if they don’t match. I thought that was a stupid design decision, but the alternative is for your other units of the same class to level up to the new unit’s level. I guess they didn’t want to give free boosts in level, but if it was up to me, anything to reduce grinding is always a plus. Anyone know a fast way to level up the Lord class so I can use the Lv. 22 Xenobian sword I got? Any good maps for that?
It seems to me that the class tiers haven’t changed much from the original TO. Archers are still top tier, and Canopus is the ultimate boss killer with a bow. Knights w/ Phalanx and Rampart Aura is an amazing combo. I can’t find a use for Ninjas other than their binding skill, and Swordmasters make for decent support characters but not much else. Wizards can be devastating depending on the spells they have. Rogues seem disappointing, and their Steal skill doesn’t function as I’d hoped (I thought they would steal the enemy’s equipment). Warlocks still appear to be useless. No idea if Tamers are any good as I have no beasts in my party. The Lord class seems to be able to use any skill, plus they get their own unique skills. I’m interested in their unique skills but I’m not at a high enough level to see if they’re truly broken.
Oh, and fuck Square Enix and their stupid-ass names. Some of the names they use in this game are nearly indecipherable.
I played a friend’s copy until just after you switch main characters. Fucking dragons. It was one of those games that make it too hard to level up anyone who falls behind the curve. I did like that you had to equip skills and bonuses, but character levels make it so you eventually just load up your best meat plow and murder things.
About the 32-bit era Square had some really shitty translators, especially when they tried to translate Germanic names into Japanese into English. Just look at FFT.
