That quote was in response to people who said they would pirate his game after the initial remarks he made. His first remark was incredibly rude, but there is some truth to it. The quality of many Japanese games has sort of gone downhill as of late, and it’s sad to watch.
With that said, he definitely should have been more professional with his public statements. Does he do this shit often?
I think he just has nostalgia goggles on. He doesn’t remember all the shit that Japan churned out in the 90’s because he’d rather remember the good stuff.
As such it seems like there is significantly less good stuff coming out of Japan now than there was in the 90’s just because he’s got a faulty memory. It’s like the people who still maintain that the old Pokemon show is better than the current one (hint: they’re both terrible).
The problem I have is that not all gamers are pirates. If he’d said Pirates are the shittiest people ever, I wouldn’t have bothered to make the thread.
And recently he HAS been doing this shit often. Probly cuz his game hits soonish
What’s the benchmark people use to judge whether a video game is bad? Can someone post some tests they’ve run instead of subjective opinions? I’m talking at the technical level here. Frames per second, screen tearing, lag between controller and on screen character, load times, bugs, freezes/crashes, etc. Are Japanese games failing at those more than Western games?
See, I can go and read car reviews and know car A is better than car B because A has better mileage or a better stopping distance from 100 mph. I know this because car reviewers post NUMBERS. Contrast that to reading game reviews which boils down to comparing one person’s opinion to another.
This + how ever many game breaking bugs are in Skyrim. People will point to Skyrim as the gold standard RPG this generation. I’ll admit I must have over 150 hours in Skyrim but at the technical level? It’s terrible. Frame rate is all over the place, combat animation is poor, low quality (console level) textures on the PC version. The HD pack didn’t help much. That’s why I said in the GOTY thread Skyrim’s both the best and worst game of the year.
This guy really knows how to alienate himself. This will have a very strong effect of either people backing him or him totally failing as a game dev.
Also, simply saying the entire Japanese game industry as a whole is terrible without any examples when Western (I love how it’s the world vs Japan, so dumb) games have been lagging in quality as well.
Mike Z should just start being a humongous jerk to everyone from now on to promote Skullgirls.
On a more serious note, remember that people also judge games separate from the technical level too. This includes new/fresh gameplay mechanics executed well, aesthetics, storylines, and the like.
