Fei Long Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

I second the non use of sweep for knockdowns, you could take this away and I’d never even notice. Your j.mp like OSD mentions is your best weapon on KD.

Another sneaky one is after blocked j.mp - as you land straight into tenshin, risky , but usually pay’s off on heavy turtles (Balrog, Guile, Rose etc etc)

cr.lk x 2 , stop, walk forward a little, cr.lp rekka

There are so many things you can do with Fei up close, but most involve trying to get a reaction (the wrong reaction) from your opponent.

Basically for ground based mix ups, you want to take these tools and switch them round and mix them up…

  1. Overhead
  2. Tic throw
  3. Baiting with stopped combo’s
  4. Flame kick FADC
  5. cl.mp
  6. lp rekka from full range
  7. back and forward dashes.
  8. Tenshin traps
  9. st.lp spam
  10. Safe EX rekka x 2

What are some Good tick throws with Fei? I need to start incorporating that into my game.

wow…i’ve never had a win streak like this with Ken…

took my fei online on PSN for the first time in ranked. 3 days later almost at 3000 pp, hit a 17 win streak with him…lol

Fei is so friggin awesome, ur skill is almost directly translated to the character. I love this guy. If you could link rekka instead of canceling he might actually be too good, but I still get some corner combos with timing c.lk .clk pause c.lp–lp Rekka. It’s a pretty smooth rhythm once you get it down. now i have to incorporate tenshin, st.mp and cancel my flame kicks into chicken wing for extra damage. I’m not good enough to win agains the seasoned players online with 4000+pp, I don’t have enough comfortability yet with fei to know which normal to use in every situation.

I thought Flame kick wold be good as an anti-air but the timing is crazy. I do it from a crouch, so maybe I’m not fast enough or i’m trying to do it too deep and it’s coming out too late. But I don’t like Anti Airing with normals as a Ken player, I’m too used to dp -_-

Gonna be a hard habit to break.

It’s probably not your timing, it’s most likely the distance. Flame kick has awful range.

As for tick throws.

  1. cr.Lk, cr.Lk, throw. Mix this with cr.Lk, cr.Lk, delayed cr.Lp xx Lp rekka.
  2. cl.Mp, throw. I mix this with either another cl.Mp or Cr.mp followed by rekka
3 cr.Mp, cr.Mp, dash up, throw.* Mix this with cr.Hp or rekka instead of dashup throw*
    4 4x cr.Lk, st.lk, dash up, throw. Same as 3

Not sure if all of these count as tick throws, but these are all the setups I find useful.
Hope it helps

Yeah, st.HK is better a lot of the time - for characters with large jump arcs (Chun) or difficulty getting in (Honda). I use EX FK a lot. Nice damage, and no need to save meter unless your game plan involves the Super (which to be honest is rare).

that sucks man…so none of Fei’s flame kicks have priority like shoto’s DP? Well…EX is still something, and the damage on it is good, so st.HK/EX FK works for me…What’s your overall use for his forward RH, it’s 2-hit, kinda slow, but seems like a decent poking tool, i thought it could be a max range punish but if you hit that, a rekka is usually feasible too.

I have decent patience, but right now, I think my fei just needs familarity. With Ken, I know when to step kick, when to c.mk-FB, when to just c.mk as a poke and not FB after it. When to straight jump. what normal to come down with to do a tick throw. What to do in the corner etc…

My Fei is just not there yet when it comes to specifics, the normals I don’t have much use for atm is his forward RH, and perhaps his far st.hp. Would it be safe on block after a max range st.HP to sweep or c.HP after it?

also, when trying to anti-air something with your own air normal, what has the most priority. I seem to be a few people with Jump back HK, but going forward jump seems to trade in air to air. You guys using his mp or hp in air-to-air?

i’ve mainly been using f+rh to confirm into super, but i’m pretty low level still

F + RH - I only really use against heavy back dashers on wake up as an alternative to cr.lk + cr.hP. It’ll catch one hit for a reset. The super buff is pointless, I’d rather just confirm super from the bnb via jab cancel or mp cancel. Unless your landing it off a -30 frame disadvantage or something retarded like that.

His far st.hp is a really useful tool. I use it as a fairly safe poke to stuff the start up on specials and also as a spacing tool. It’s very good against Zangief. It can also stuff things like Bisons scissors if timed correctly. I also find it quite handy in the mirror as an alternative to cr.hp. It’ll wipe out those far range rekka’s and cr.mp.

Air to air I use both, I usually use HP as a pre-emptive jump back counter, similar to Sagats jump back HP. Thing’s like Devils reverse, Wall dives, or a general good read on a player taking to the air. J.mp also works well as a quick air counter as does J.mk.

You need to use all your normal’s to get mileage out of Fei as in some matches rekka pressure just is not practical (or your leaving yourself open to reversals). There’s not many normal’s Fei has that don’t get used apart from sweep and almost all neutral jumping normal’s bar HK (which is god like).

Yeah, Shienkyaku doesn’t have that good of horizontal coverage. Plus, I personally find it to be more prone to being traded, or stuffed than most other Shoryu-style specials. Getting comfortable, and knowing when to use st.HK or even far st.MK at times, will help avoid some sighing and headaches.

F+HK is not really much of a “poking” tool. Like Highland mentioned, it’s pretty good to use every once in a while if your opponent loves backdashing, or Focus a lot. It’s not bad as a meaty either, with the Super Cancel buff, catching something can really ruin their day.

Ok guys I need you help Winter Brawl is this weekend and I need some tips for some matchups. Balrog is by far my worst matchup. Also need some tips for Rose, and Gief so far. I say Rose because when I part Sabin a few weeks ago at Big 2 I gave him a good match but he still won 2-0. His spacing was amazing and he had some real good counter hit setsups.

I really need help with the Balrog matchup. The mash LP is a pain in the ass and it stops so much and it can go into a combo is easily. I will get help with other matchups from my newest teammate Juicebox while im there but he doesnt play Fei so he wont know the best setups like you guys.

That’s my worst matchup to Jason!!

I do ok against a Balrog that plays footies and doesnt abuse rush punch. But if its a mash LP and random shit im done! Put a fork in me because I am done. In fact I lose to any player that mashes. I am so used to top players blocking that when I face someone who goes nuts I am lost. Im lost to the point as if the lights are all out and I have no light to guide me.

What I really really hate is this. I beat Sanford in casuals at Big 2 and he turns to me and says “you have a lot of potential” Then when I play online I lose to the dumbest shit known to man. WTF!!! Oh well I will try to rep Fei well this weekend. I have 2 room mates that will help in Juicebox and Wolfkrone.

It’s nice to see a good player say something that I can totally relate to. I’m terrified of playing a masher. I have no fun at all having to adapt my playstyle to punish a thoughtless player that does the same thing over and over and over and over.

Yeah I hate it as well. The term top players used is “you got scrubbed out” they can’t stand randomness as well. I will be at Winter Brawl early so any tips until them will help. I will be able to speak to PR Balrog and play him in casuals which I hope in turn will help me. I want to make top 32. Top 16 if I’m lucky.

Here is a example of what I’m talking about. It was played on PSN which is bad in its own

And here this Balrog never gets past 1 bar of meter as he uses EX armor A LOT. I dropped a combo in rod 1 but frustration took over and I did dumb shit after. Rnd 2 I didn’t give a rats ass

lol…he wasn’t really random, he did headbutts in anticipation of you doing, well pretty much anything because he knows it has a lot of priority. If you can do OS, rog is free on wakeup, and that doesn’t change regardless of the players level of skill. His normals are too good to go back and forth, IMO, this is a match you should play aggressively, especially early on when they don’t have meter.

When I get a throw in the first 10 seconds of a match against rog as Ken, I usually win. Focus straight punch once in a while, but don’t use it too much. You also won round one by doing that c.mk under his rush punch, you just needed to end it with chip damage ex rekka after your jabs…

lol…I feel you though, rog is one of the basic characters that’s really good but doesn’t take a lot of skill to be particularly good with, so it seems kinda cheap. But if you come up with a few KD strategies, it should help out a bit. Fei’s oki game should on par with Ken’s, and most players say the match is 5-5 because of that factor. Rog has to EX Dash out of wakeup to escape, because you can OS and catch his backdash. So even when he escapes, he has to waste meter, and Rog without meter isn’t so scary anymore.
Ok jas, A LOT! to work on here. I know you said you didn’t give a shit, but your throwing matches here.

Jumps - Stop it!! I counted 11 jumps in the first match, with about 1 being effective. I don’t mind the occasional neutral jump, but basically your saying to him “I’m trying to catch a rush punch”, at which point he’ll just keep walking forward (fast). No reason ever to jump back unless your pre-empting an AA.

Wake up flame kick - NO! If your going to wake up special, make it a CW of varying strengths if anything. Risk reward says you eat a fat combo for a blocked Flame kick, where as you net a CW into a possible 1 frame link high damage combo, or you score 3 regular hits with some invincibility on LK/MK, or he blocks and he has a tight window to possibly punish although unlikely.

Full screen rush punches - buffer Ultra, all the time!! At minute 1.11 in the first game, the guy throws a 3/4 screen EX overhead that you could have lit a cigarette and then hit qcf x 2 3ppp. Seriously the guy in the first video was asking for a full Ultra. That was just one time, but I’m sure there were about 3 situations you could have easily Ultra 1 - BIG DAMAGE.

Second game - at 54 seconds, you mind fuck the guy with a FADC flame kick, then successfully land a tic throw, he’s on the ropes here, beads of sweat are starting to appear on his forehead , its the comeback of the century! and after the throw, you neutral jump??? Man , get up in his grill (as you Americans say), I’d have been on his ass so fast there, I might have even just dashed up meaty tenshin for the round right there.

Over all. You need to work on really pressuring rog when he’s down, and not throwing away massive situations of advantage. Also remember , he has rush punch but you have rekka! Rekka back, don’t just sit there and take charges, make him know your going to play hard ball on the ground. Don’t be afraid to just pressure with rekka, just make sure you’ve got your spacing nice and go at it.

EDIT: One more thing, I see you using cr.mk, but personally I prefer cr.hp, I think it just offers that little bit better damage and priority (probably the wrong word, but you know what I mean). Nothing wrong with cr.mk though, but try it out as an alternative.
Small tips for Rose and Gief would be -:

Rose - Consider picking Ultra 2 for cross up shenanigans. It’s likely your focus attempts are going to get broken by Soul spiral, you don’t really need the insurance of a big damage crumple in this match as our normal’s and knockdown pressure are good enough to take the match. Block lots! It’s much better to take the throws than eat the cr.mp frame traps into Spiral , on a knockdown, go wild, she’s going to get blown up fast, especially if you can nail her in the corner. I’d just be very patient in walking her back and staying close(ish), no jumps!. LK CW under pressure is not the worst idea, most (all?) of her strings into spiral are not true.

Gief - Again U2 is a viable option here for light knee cross ups into Death. Keep him at bay with st.hp, cr.hp and AA with St.hk. If he jumps from a far angle, I would just let him, there’s a good chance his j.hp will stuff your attempted st.hk and now your in trouble. Stay on the ground the entire match, just around mid - close range and basically chip him to death with normal’s (cr.mk, cr.mp. cr.hp) , once he’s in the corner it’s too tough for him to leave. Back dashing is always your best option when things get too close for comfort. If you have the meter you can Super the lariat.

(anyone tell I’m a fan of U2 in some matches!!!)

There’s no amazing tech that I can think off that will give you an edge. Neville has some nice OS against Gief though if I remember right.

Lol! I missed your criticism style lol!

Online brings out bad habits as well these matches were on PSN. When one of these players went for a rush punch I did attempt to ultra but instead I got a jhp. Crmk hitbox goes under rush puch/upper. Also it has a faster recover if the Rog uses ex as where crhp will get hit plus longer recover and I get punished in the end. As for U2 against Rose. Art never goes for crossups. He plays ground game, I almost sent him to losers at Big2 but he used U2 crossup which is near impossible to block.

Once I get to Winter Brawl I will be fine as I will play Juicebox and Wolfkrone a lot before the tournament begins and that will get me grounded again. Online is the worst way to train for me that is. So many flaws and errors come out from my side. Also for the record I was told even if you and the other player have green bars you still have about 2 frames of lag. Art broke it down to me. 16ms of lag is 1 frame.

I know its no excuse but when I play 80% of my games offline against my teammates and then I go online I feel it. I guess its a mental hurdle I have to get over. Thanks for the help. I played a very good Akuma last night on PSN who had his Oki game on point. I will have those replays up soon.

Anybody have advice on the Fei-Guile matchup? I’m loving these tips by the way!
