Fei Long Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

Copied from the Match up thread my comments…

I played an extremely set up/gimmic style Hakan player tonight. Took me about 8 matches to get a handle on what was going on. For now the little snippets I took from the match were.

You need to cr-lk to avoid the flip grab on wake up.
He can safe jump us into an ambiguous J.HK and option select to hit the CW escape - very tricky to avoid.
Oiled up if he focus attacks our jump attack he can recover and react before we can
His Super can only be crouched
He has a block string (and on hit) involving light kicks that he buffers a EX grab for decent damage - neutral jump/backdash it to escape.
You can rekka when he oils up from almost a full screen if your reactions are good after a dash up - look for this without oil.
He seems to suffer from the tic throw/tenshin game
Oiled up he’s extremely scary - he can knock you out of the air if you try and jump back and combo into KD.
MK CW seemed to be really good at blowing up his set ups
St.Fierce seemed to be working near the end of the set as a keep away. Could be useful in trade/wake up situations.

I will mention again the invincibility on the CW seemed real spammable against his set ups, really like the Abel match. I started abusing it a bit.

Also something I didn’t mention that you might want to think about is U2. He has this real ambiguous cross up/safe jump that blows you’re mind. I was using U2 purely so I didn’t have to deal with that play. Also when he knocks you down and oils up it SEEMS like you should have time to punish this when you wake up but you don’t. I got caught so many times trying to punish the oil pour on wake up.

I was treating him a little like Geif with st.fierce but oiled up I’d stay the hell away and just zone him out. Oiled up he’s top teir.

Yeah I know oiled up he’s to tier, and any blocked Rekka outside of EX isn’t safe as his SPD reaches hella far!

Thanks for the tips

Longtime 'rog player. I recently picked up Fei Long in ST, now I’m playing him in SF4. I checked the other sticky threads and couldn’t find an answer to this.

If you FADC and then do a forward jumping HK, Fei Long’s jump seems noticeably shorter than his normal ones. Is there any other way I can set this up without using FADC?

After some thought here’s what I’ve come up with: if you AA consistently, buffer a forward dash (just like an fadc) and if you traded the dash will come out. If you hit them clean then nothing comes out. If you traded and you dashed you have to eyeball the follow up CW because it wasn’t a clean AA FADC CW combo

I hope I make sense, cuz if you can get this little quirk down you’re basically doing what Sagat does on trade TU except you have more things to combo after (super, CW->super, ultra, FK)

On a separate note, Highland your advice for U2 vs Hakan was really good as I played dat Hakan player (Kimo) again last weekend in tournament. I still lost but I didn’t feel as hopeless in the matchup, and I started learning how to deal with him while oiled/non oil.

I also got some nice silent buttons so no more sound play against me >:D

Is there a list of characters that fei’s standing jab will wiff on crouching ?

ST.LP Whiff:

Adon, Akuma, Blanka, C.Viper, Cammy, Chun-Li, Cody, Dan, Dhalsim, E.Honda, Ibuki, Juri, Ken, Rose, Rufus and Ryu.

IDK about all those chars missing.

I had:

Blanka
Chun
Cammy
C.Viper (random, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesnt’t)
Dee Jay (also random misses)
Dhalsim
Rufus (random misses)
Yang

I gotta see about the chars you said though.

Forgot about the AE cast, whoops. Silly moi.

I’m pretty sure it whiffs Evil Ryu like it does on Ryu. Not entirely sure about Oni and Yang.

That list -should- be more or less correct, unless there has been some sort of stealth buff to st.LP. It’s off the top of my head from Super.

Ok gaiz I got some info to share! It may have been already posted but for those interested it should really help out your meaty pressure.

Tired of trying to time dat meaty normal to come out? Only to get a reversal right in the face? Have no fear! This simple yet extremely effective method will help you get your meaty timing down on the WHOLE cast!!!

Ok enough with the pleasantries here is how it’s done:

  1. Training mode: set the dummy to No Block and Stand, and then get a hard knockdown (cl.MP->cr.HK for example)

  2. As the character is standing, press cl.MP again on the very first frame that they are hittable. If you timed your MP correctly, you should be able to combo cr.HP. if you didn’t then no dice, your timing was bad.

  3. Practice this ad nauseam with every character, especially the ones who have different wakeup timings (Yang, Adon)

That’s it, as simple as it sounds it’s actually quite hard to get it right every time :frowning: but keep in mind that once you get this meaty time down pat your corner game just got REALLY scary.

How so? Ok so say you’re playing online cringe and some d00d keeps crouch teching or pressing buttons on wakeup. On a knockdown if you can happen to get the meaty MP timing to come out correctly, they’ll most likely be counter hit as they were pressing buttons. If not and they blocked, then remember that you’re still +3 if you used CL.MP!!

BEWARE! This will lose to reversals that have invincibility frames, so if you suspect they’re going to go for a reversal with invincibility frames, use LP or LK. It should recover before their move comes out, or you’ll block before anything of yours comes out.

If you need a visual as to what the cl.MP to cr.HP looks like i can put a vid up

Good luck, and stay stronk

Here is a reupload of the chart from the Fei Master Guide http://i.imgur.com/U3D91mj.png

Not sure if it’s outdated or anything.

Regarding character specific stuff: is (meaty?) st.lp xx tenshin char specific? and is there a list of who gets hit 3 times by HK CW but not MK CW?

Also I’m having trouble doing cr.mp on reaction to counterhits.
I know I should be buffering but I’ll explain to the best of my ability what the problem is.
To practice I set counter hit to random and then cr.mp and qcf with the same timing I’d use if I knew I was going to land the ch cr.mp and I try to lp on reaction. Sadly it doesn’t work.
Then I try to qcf lp but the rekka comes out regardless of whether the cr.mp is ch or not and that’s not ideal.
Finally I try to just rekka on reaction and that works perfectly every time…in training mode.
Please give me your wisdom. Some tips on timing the buffer. Maybe I’m just being dumb? Just let me know.

To be honest you’re not going to get punished 99% of the time with a follow up lp rekka on block. Not if you’re trying to use you’re counter hits properly. Ie - walk back a little cr.mp xx lp rekka etc etc. The tip of the fist is going to hit at which point you’re -4. Only characters like Cody are going to be able to put you under the pump for that stuff.

Just get in the habit of alway’s doing a QCF after you’ve pressed cr.mp.

Since pools for EVO came out I thought i’d post mine here, at first I had Kazunoko in my pool D: but then he got moved whew Im in pool A20 and the most notable names that I recognized were Eita (again D: ) and Jayce the Ace (who is on my side of the bracket). I didn’t see any other names that stood out to me, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t a killer. If anyone here recognizes a name to look out for i’d be very appreciative

I play AKG Shinji who from what i’ve been told is from AK and plays Viper? Anyone here know much about him/tips for the matchup? Hopefully they don’t move people around too much and this is how the bracket will stay.

Heres the link to my bracket: http://evo2013.s3.amazonaws.com/brackets/ssf4_a20.html

Are you tryna do ch cr :mp: into rekkas? If you’re having trouble, on counter hit or not, do cr :mp: x cr :lp: x rekkas. Counter hit into rekkas isn’t hard, it’s more you have to get used to the timing. Immediately after you do cr :mp:

Nah Doc I can do ch cr.mp into rekka’s everytime in training mode. But in a real match I can’t do it on reaction to the counter hit :frowning:
and I know I can link cr.mp to cr.lp but it fails max distance.

All righty, I didn’t find much info on the Djalsim MU in the master guide.

I’m pretty confident with Fei and reasonably competent with him. Though, my first match in EVO will be against F Champ.

I haven’t had much exposure to good Dhalsim at all.

Things to keep in mind or exploit would be greatly appreciated

Gota punish that teleport with CW as much as you can IMO. I play a decent Sim and really it comes down to taking hits until you can nail him in the corner. The raw Tenshin and throws both negate the wake up Ultra so I abuse the shit out of those once he’s got Ultra loaded.

I’ve also watched Fuudo sweep Sims arms but on actual application I find this quite hard to get right. It’s almost like you’ve got to sit almost just off full screen. I’ve also noticed if you get put in the fireball/teleport cross up , if you slowly roll the stick round and EX CW it will either let you escape or option select the EX flame kick if he crosses you up with different timing. We would always have meter in this match anyway.

I’ve had success with both playing patient whilst walking him back and also just going bat shit crazy and taking damage until I can get in. I’m not still sure what’s better…

Hard match.

I’ve played Ryan before, after all he does live here in NorCal, and I can tell you it’s not going to be easy to get in. He’s a very smart player who WILL frustrate you, but do not be deterred as he going to find himself cornered eventually. Try not to jump, Ryan has great reactions and will most likely bait you to jump so he can teleport out or AA you. His teleport mix up is top notch and he will use every normal in his book to keep you out.

If you get him into the corner try your hardest not to jump yourself into the corner, keep him there. Respect his super if he has it, and do not try and neutral jump him if he has ultra since he’ll activate and trade with your normal if you pressed a button in the air. Like Highland said its a tough match, but we do damage in troves so once you’re in stay in but don’t go too crazy. GL and I’ll try and stop by if your match isn’t in the 8am pool

I think Renegade is the TO for Civil War.
Sean Gilley is the Guile who made autocorrect flash kick/escaping 1f unblockables videos? http://www.youtube.com/user/gilleybaba/videos
I’ve played a G-money88 on xbl, I think he was a ~3k pp Ken. G-money isn’t the most original name so it might not be the same one.

Here is my bracket http://evo2013.s3.amazonaws.com/brackets/ssf4_c6.html
Originally Laugh wasn’t in it, he got added in later. Anybody have any info on the names in there?

First match against “shinebox”

I think plays he plays Ken. I’ve seen him post in the tier list thread I’m sure. If it’s not Ken it’s a shoto, maybe Evil Ryu?
