Favorite puzzle games

I totally forgot about Sega Swirl, that game was so much fun. I am surprised that it was given away with the demo discs and not released as a full game or something.

I was surprized to, back then I thought it was a demo, but it is the full game. I remember it was also in the Sega Smash Pack for the system as well.

I love this game, it is very simple, but is alot of fun. These are my current scores in each game mode (been a while):

Single Game Timed: 11484 at 45
Single Game Untimed: 12880

Level Challenge Timed: 27123 at 6
Level Challenge Untimed: 16105 at 5

I got two puzzle games for my SNES lately, Kirby’s Avalanche (Puyo Puyo) and Tetris Attack (Panel de Pon). Having lots of fun with the later.

Tetris

Buile Baku - a very old ps2 game, but one i imported on a whim many years ago. amazing game. its hard to explain the mechanics of the game.

You have different shaped blocks and have a certain amount of moves to completely detonate the board within a certain number of moves, using a certain number of blocks. when placing a block surrounding blocks less than one square away also detonate.

funky and hard as all hell.

My favorite tetris games in order of greatness:

1 - Tetris Splash for Xbox Live
2 - Tetris Grandmaster Challenge
3 - Tetris DS
4 - Tetris by Tengen for NES
5 - Tetris for IBM PC (80s game with changing backgrounds and 12 colors or something like that)

I like to play other puzzle games to, Like Puzzle Fighter HD and Pokemon Trozei with my Daughter.

I like Three Seven… but I want to find a Three Seven game that doesn’t suck balls. The flash game I play doesn’t always add correctly, it’s weird.

I notice you guys are listing stuff other than what I’ve really recognized as puzzle games. I tend to think of stuff like Lemmings, Punch Out, Fantastic Contraption (flash), and Lost Vikings. Currently I’ve been playing World of Goo, and months before I was occasionally playing Chu Chu Rocket

that new puzzle game is on psn, i dont know how good it is though

Tetris
Puzzle Quest
Puzzle Fighter
Bejeweled
Lumnies

I picked up the 3d picross before I left Japan and it’s a lot of fun

Bamf.

Started playing Columns 3 again. Love this game. I think it’s the most fun puzzle game for playing against another person. The reason why is because you can choose when you want to put blocks on your opponents side, whereas other puzzle games do it automatically. Not only that, but when you choose to do so it also breaks the opponents current piece in play forcing him to move on to the next one. So paying attention to your field and his becomes important. You can do things like destroy a piece that would have granted them a big chain or if you notice they bump you on reaction to you bumping them, trick them into destroying a piece you thought would have been useless anyway.

Some guy put up a bunch of videos on youtube explaining some things with annotations as he plays the single players.

If there is a puzzle game that has this type of shit and more please tell me. I remember back in late 90s or early 2000s there was a japanese beta for Puzzle Bobble Online. You’d play in six person rooms all facing each other at the same time. It had crazy power ups that you could choose to dump one one of the five people you were facing, so it was comparable to Columns 3. Was pretty damn fun but I can never find that game even now.

Panel De Pon and Puzzle Quest here.

as for the magical drop type games, i sorta enjoy those, but not nearly as much.

Gotta love some puzzle games… a lot of good ones have already been mentioned, so for the sake of not being repetitive and making a huge list, I’ll just throw one in that hasn’t been mentioned yet;

Money Puzzle Exchanger - kinda like Magical Drop, but now adding up numbers comes into the equation. Weird and strange at first, but super addicting once you get the hang of it.

I saw someone mention Twinkle Star Sprites, which is an awesome concept. A shmup/puzzle hybrid? Yes please! Anyone who like it should try out the 9th Touhou game, Phantasmagoria of Flower View. It’s what you’d come to expect of a Touhou game, but plays a lot like Twinkle Star Sprites.
