No one’s denying that. I even acknowledged that when I stated that her and Ivy are arguably the most shamless display of Fan Service in fighting games if not gaming period. I was just saying classic Felicia had more to her than just fan service. She had much more personality. Where as MVC3 Felicia went from a cute, playful yet sassy smart mouth with a lil attitude. To… losing all that personality and trying WAY to hard to be cute.
Pretty much every fighting game has a fanservice character, end discussion.
As far as the Marvel games I agree it was a huge miscalculation by Capcom in who they chose. Morrigan was somewhat a must since she was sort of the Ryu of Darkstalkers, however in MVC2 when you had additional characters…instead of Felicia they should have had Talbain, somewhat similar characters except I think a lot of Marvel players would have got a kick out of his beast cannon. Instead of BB Hood they should have had Jedah. Seeing what he could do with his blade projectiles, flight, air dashes, etc. all super pumped up for Marvel would be impressive. Not to mention he seemed to be very popular. When Vampire Savior came to GGPO, there were like 50+ players in there on a regular basis. 95% of them chose Jedah.
Some fan service characters are deemed worst than I guess the standard fan service character. Like in some people’s opinion they go too far even by fan service standards. Someone should do a top 10 best/worst fan service characters vid. I’d love to read the shit storm in the comments.
And yeah I’m glad to see other fans feel the same way about the over exposure of Darkstalkers female cast in Marvel vs Capcom series and other VS titles. Morrigan should definitly always be a rep. But Felicia,Hsein-Ko, ahd BB Hood should’ve taken a back seat for some of the fellas.
SVC aka CVS’s retarded cousin who’s a product of incest? Yeah I’m not counting that. As for lil B.B. she kinda appears in the dead rising 3 DLC. as disturbing as it is to see Frank dress up as her, and don’t get me started on that dude dressed as Felicia…wtf Capcom!?
If you think about it, a lot of Darkstalkers could work in other genres:
-BB Hood in a Ghosts 'n Goblins style game
-Jon Talbain in a DMC style game where he has a shit ton of martial arts moves
-Raptor in a hybrid adventure/rhythm game. THE POWER OF ROCK 'N ROLL.
They probably thought that Talbain would be too much like Ruby Heart since Cheval Seller does look like Beast Cannon, Flan Mer even acts like ES Beast Cannon. Also, last I checked, Gallon was pretty low in terms of popularity in Japan.
Hahaha. Perhaps I should have explained better in my last post. MK is the ONLY character in Brawl who can perform actual combos hence why he makes almost everybody else irrelevant in competitive play. Think about as if Ryu was **the only guy **in Street Fighter who had supers, ultras, special attacks and everybody else could just do basic attacks and 2 hit combos using said basic attacks and nothing else! Then you start to get why the competitive smash community moved to ban him for a time (which in itself caused a riot between pro and anti MK groups.) One of the well known smash bros players, Mew2King, threw a hissy fit like a 3 year old over the decision which kinda made the move irrelevant as soon afterwards, TO’s caved in to peer pressure and unbanned MK facepalm
Too long, Did NOT read: MetaKnight simply has too many options compared to well…everybody else in competitive play, namely being able to actually combo and the only character to be able to do so hence why he is a genuine “cheap bastard” in Brawl’s competitive scene!
Felineki. Wow. I never really looked at the Night Warriors art work of the characters. But classic Felicia really does look like she’ll stomp your shit in. I’m reminded of Amazon from Dragon’s Crown when I look at those pics ( minus dat bodacious ass ). She’s built and looks like she can whupass, but still looks like a lady. Why in the hell did Capcom turn her from this, to the scrawny uber cute pushover she has become in MVC3?
Part of it’s probably just overall trends in media in general. Big, muscular characters were in general a more popular thing back in the 90s than they are now. But in Darkstalkers case in particular there’s the shift over the years from “attempt at a flagship fighting game franchise to follow up Street Fighter 2” to “token fanservice slot in random crossover games”.
Never thought about it like that but it makes perfect sense. I guess Capcom noticed how much people took a liking to the female cast with the cosplaying and what not, and just rolled with it. Instead of developing Darkstalkers further. ( Imagine what newer entries could’ve been like if they continued to build off of Savior ) they must’ve said “Darkstalkers ain’t selling like Street Fighter but people like the girls. So fuck it lets use them as fan service in crossovers”. What a waste of potential.
The amount of time and money spent on cosplaying Darkstalkers would create a balanced, polished Darkstalkers 4 with every character returning plus 20 new characters, and the graphics for each frame would resemble HDR. But no, we got cosplay. Because no one remembers the male characters.
Unfortunately that design is not very common for female characters.
Rila from Breakers looks similar to that version.
But a japanese bakeneko design would have been amazing for felicia.
