Favorite Button Layout?

I’m looking to make a custom box and I was wondering what button layouts people used up in here. I like the style of the Astro City Jap layout the best, as it seems to make the most sense (I don’t have a mutated pinky finger). I’ve tried my friend’s TE stick and its not bad either, but I’ve had some incidents where I try to slap the 3P/3K for ultra, missing it altogether :grrr:

So what do you guys prefer? Keep in mind I have NEVER used a stick seriously for any fighting game and I have a set of Sanwa JLF and OBSN30s to work with.

Astro City or the Vewlix Layouts seem to be favored a lot. Maybe whatever’s on the HRAPs also (Seimitsu 2P and Sanwa 1p?)

Personally, I still like the Capcom classic 6-button straight layout. I know, seems weird right?

Depends what game you’re planning to play with it. For instance,I find that a Straight 6 (american layout) is great for MvC2 because of triangle jumps (jump, ( downward air dash) down + lp + hp -> lk) Trying to triangle jump with a curved layout is a bit harder since lk is much further.

A curved 6 like Astro City, I find is great for fighting in general where you dont need to do a triangle jump.

Though I think in general, its what you’re most comfortable with really.

it dont matter to me i can play on whatever but my fav is the vewlix layout

Astro city baby!!! Born and raised!

My fav is the 6 button astro city layout, I guess that’s because I play with that layout most often. I do have a 6 button vewlix layout and straight 6 layout joystick for friends who prefer those.

For a Sanwa JLF and 30’s, I would definitely recommend the Taito Vewlix or the Sega Versus City control panel layouts.

well here’s my stick and I love its layout. I think the viewflix layout which is all the rage these days is ass. for one the stick is way too close to the buttons and second having the bottom row shifted over to the left does not follow how fingers naturally curl and really defeats the purpose of a curved layout for me. also having the bottom row shifted to the left makes the problem of the joystick being too close even worse.

What is the layout called thats on the hrap 1’s and t5 sticks? I like that layout alot for all fighting games including mvc2 when im at home… Its almost a mix of a japanese and a american layout. but i like the astrocity layout when im at the arcade.

I like the Vewlix layout and I also like the HRAP 1/T5 layout.

I kind of like the Tekken 5/HRAP 1 button layout the best. I prefer the 8-button layout for maximum flexibility but generally only use the first six unless I’m getting hurt and can’t get synchronized with three-button pushes.

I’m okay with the HRAP 2 SA/HRAP 3 layout, too, but generally prefer the straighter button layout, too. After doing 5 major stick mods (all T5 button layouts – 4 T5 sticks plus 1 Arcana Heart 2) I have to say that I think the art layout is helped more by the straighter button layout versus the HRAP 3 “kinked” button layout. At least most of the workout that I’ve seen here on faceplates seems to be more complemented by the T5 button layout.

The Sega Saturn pad definitely had the best button layout out of any digital pad I’ve played with. Nobody IMHO has done a better pad than that one which is why the design still gets copied all the time for fighting game-specific pads. I kind of wish a joystick could be done with its buttons at about the same angle as that joypad’s buttons, too.

Joystick designs, I think, are still evolving, but consensus here seems to be more in favor of the Tekken 5 6-button layout with Start/Select (and in some cases Home buttons) mounted on the front wall of the stick box like the MadCatz TE stick. I frankly have never had a problem myself with the position of the Start/Select buttons on the Hori stick faceplates and don’t care for reaching over the top of the stick face to feel for the Start button myself.

I like the vewlix layout the most so far. I actually like the stick being close to the buttons. It feels more natural. If you rest your hands in front of your, see if you feel more comfortable with your hands close together or further apart. I liked them close together. But in the end, it’s just whatever layout you’re good on.

As far as the classic straight style, I think it’s harder to do PPP and KKK accurately. My ultra’s were much more accurate as soon as I switched.

6 and 7 button layouts are gay. but in some cases necessary. Prefer 8

I still love the American layout. Cant help it. Feels like home.

also, i have a thing for this layout too

no. 6 is plenty.

It’s all a matter of preference, really. If you like the Astro City layout, then use it. Personally, though, I would use the Vewlix layout with the 7th button. The Vewlix 6-button layout isn’t drastically different from the Astro City layout, and the 7th button allows the stick to have the SNK layout too.

Vewlix. Astro City comes in at a close second.

Just some silly, obscure knowledge I wanted to share…

The T5/HRAP1 button arrangement is one that, as far as I know, was never used for an actual arcade cabinet, but has been used for many console sticks over the years (mostly older Horis, but also others like the Sega Virtua Stick’s main six-patch). Some people actually just call it the “console layout.”

What most people call the “Sega Astro City layout” is actually the Sega Versus City layout. The Versus cabs have only one player per control panel so the layout is completely centered to face the machine directly (players facing each other, head-to-head). The Astro cabs have two players per panel (players beside each other, shoulder-to-shoulder). The Astro 1st player side is made for players facing a little to the right: it has the same button arrangement as the Versus, but the joystick is a little further up and to the left. The Astro 2nd player side is made for players facing a little to the left: it rotates the button arrangement counter-clockwise until each column of buttons is aligned straight up. This is something that like 99.9% of SRK does not seem to know; it’s something I noticed myself because I’m a huge loser.

For a custom arcade stick for only one player, I strongly prefer the Versus City layout (over the Astro City right side or the Astro City left side) because it is properly centered for when you are sitting with your shoulders square to the controls, ie. facing them directly.

Oooh, good to know. On the slagcoin pages, which one of those would be centered? I’ve seen the two astro city ones that are slightly tilted towards each other, but is there a layout that’s basically Versus City?
