Fallout: New Vegas

So you’re looking for difficulty?

A challenge might be a better word, yes.

Then keep your playing style within the confines of the character you create.

These games are flexible in that you can make yourself as godly or as human as you want to, and it’s all up to you. It’s just a different mindset man, this thread has both kinds of players.

It’s just a single player game, you control your whole experience. Maybe you just want to make a character that wears leather armor, some sunglasses, and only uses varmint rifles or cowboy repeaters. I bet you that is challenging. Or maybe you build a character who’s stats aren’t that high, so he/she has to rely on their entire arsenal. That’s challenging, too.

Atleast this is how it is for me when I play these games. It’s a different story when it’s something multiplayer. But on single player RPG games, you control your own fate, pace, and challenge. It’s a role, just play it.

That essentially what I ended up doing. I don’t think one can really rely on the advice of others when it comes to a game like this. It’s cool to say “Hey here’s what I did” but everyone plays differently based on what they like and I get that now.

As far as what I decided to roll with, I decided to look at it from the point of view of the courier and that he’s…well a Courier and he’s just caught up in this mess. I didn’t tag a combat skill in favor of building it up over time. I went with Survival because story wise it makes sense that one would be adept at it given the situation. Speech because as a Courier he has to interact with people so I’m sure he’d be a smooth talker and Sneak because I’m sure after what happened he’d naturally want to keep a low profile when rolling up on anyone or anything.

I’ll build up Guns, Lockpick and Medicine and Repair over time because they are things that he would eventually learn and rely on to survive and I’ll throw a few points into Barter as well.

Should be a fun file, imo.

It’s funny you say that because when I mentioned that several pages ago people were vehemently arguing with me, trying to claim Energy Weapons broke the game.

Unarmed against Deathclaws definitely isn’t easy though. I’m not sure it is even possible to beat the Alpha or Mother DCs with Unarmed. Maybe at a high level with some Turbo and a lotta (real life) luck. I’m pretty sure the Legendary at least will rape you for free. Well, unless you manage to knockdown or paralyzing palm I guess, but you certainly can’t feel confident. Whenever I’d use VATS against DCs I would just die however…at most I think maybe you can try and nail an uppercut or two before you gotta run around and chow down some food (preferably caravan lunch or wasteland omelette). Uppercuts are a bit faster than straights in this game, although that kind of goes against my boxing training a bit. You can’t really shoulder roll a deathclaw overhand though I guess.

Tried the Vault 22 elevator trick. No dice. It’s whatever, Ive gotta be near the end of the game now anyway.

So has anyone done any missions of what-not with the White Glove Society? They wouldn’t accept me for any quests or anything, and I couldn’t really find out anything about them. Everyone seemed to keep saying there was something wrong with though and admittedly the place is a little creepy. I had a slight hunch about it …

White Glove Society secret?

[details=Spoiler]Apparently, they’re cannibals? When Mortimer said I wouldn’t have the stomach for it, or something like that, it came to mind. I stole a key off of Marjorie and went into the Premium Suite to search around with a Stealth Boy, but didn’t find anything except some rancher bodyguards with shotguns.

What then occurred was the most drawn out fight ever. I didn’t have high enough Sneak to bring my holdout weapons into the Ultra-Luxe, so I had to resort to punching despite having super shitty Unarmed. My armor was absorbing their shots pretty well though. So basically I ended up cornering one guy, and then just punching him for like four minutes straight until he died. Then I picked up his gun and offed the other one. I didn’t find anything damning there though, so then I went into the roped off section and the kitchen. : o

Still didn’t see anything out of the ordinary, except their systems for locking up the freezers. Then I wandered into one of the closets and amidst some of the food stuffs, found some human skulls. lol Do they give you missions if you have the Cannibalism trait? I’m really curious as to what the exact deal with them is. [/details]

Sounds like fun.

Trust, when I first got interested in these games I played them in the style of just trying to be godly and break it down(you could probably find old posts in the fallout 3 thread where I played this style), cause the RPGs I was used to lent itself to that manner(JRPGs like Final Fantasy). I used to dismiss these types of RPGs a few years ago. But now after playing them for awhile, I have much more fun and am far more entertained keeping it in a role playing style.

The mileage goes as near or far as I want it to, that’s what makes these games so good imo.

I did on my last(2nd) playthrough. It was this quest where they wanted to eat some guy’s son, but were unsure because the father was in business with them. So instead they decided they could settle for this other guy that lived by himself in some shack. Then they had some huge dinner, and ate the guy.

Did you talk to the rancher in the lobby? He starts the quest chain, it was a cool quest actually but it bugged out on my like 3 times wasting like an hour of my playthrough to complete

Alright, I’m retarded but how do you use the different ammo types (armor piercing, etc)? or is it just a specific ammo type depending on the weapon?

If you’re playing on console just press up and you’ll switch to different ammo types.

Thanks I’m on PC. I’ll try right now. It’s not even listed in the control mapping page in the options.

edit:
alright, its just going to the ammo page when a a weapon is active then selecting one from the highlighted list.

PS.
fuckin deathclaws. energy weapons are crazy nerfed now compared to FO3 :frowning: Plasma rifle is sucks even with upgrade

On PC you hit 2.

lucretz, did you try checking your perks to make sure you still have the ED-E perk?
and did you check the presidential lounge or whatever of the lucky 38? the place where all your companions can go to wait if you tell them to?

Man this character is so fun. Combat is a lot easier than I thought because I wound up going Melee. I have a 6 in STR and even though I haven’t really put too many points into it (It’s sitting at about 30) I’m still doing well. I find myself hiding a lot and going for sneak attacks which makes combat a lot more intense and fun to engage in.

Finished the game twice so far, first siding with myself, then the NCR. Are the questlines any different when you side with Mr. House/Caesar?

I was doing the Thorn subquest for the Deathclaws, went to Quarry Junction, one shotted the mother and alpha male deathclaw with the YMS/186 Gauss Rifle with 100 Energy Weapons skill, my sneak skill is like 7 but I can still hide from 100 miles away and snipe people like i’m playing a ME2 Infiltrator…

I believe there is a bug that Sneak stops being effective at 50, so there’s no point in raising it beyond that.

Sneak has never worked well for me though. I think my companions give me away, probably because Ed-E blares music randomly.

if you don’t set a companions tactics to wait or be cautious they will give away your position, happened to me when trying to sneak into Gun Runners trying to steal the blueprints.

Yeah I eventually just bought the anti-materiel rifle and went to that middle tower thing in the quarry and sniped all the deathclaws off.

It looks pretty worthless to dump pts on sneak in new vegas it seems  I need that gauss rifle though

Also I keep on getting this weird bug where either the thing I’m sniping far away never gets damaged at all (happened to the deathclaw alpha male), or their health goes to zero but doesn’t die (happened on one of the super mutants on black mountain). I’m pretty sure it only has to do with long range scoped rifles.

Which rifle has the best scope? Also, what did you guys do with Contreras at McCarran? I plan to keep him around.

Also, is it possible to clear out factions 100%?
