Well a month ago I bought 2 Genesis 6 button controller with an obvious Sega Logo on it for $6.50 including shipping.
I found it’s a fake The dead giveaway is the lack of a mode button. It also feels lighter, and cheaper.
I called Sega, hoping to either discover a different Sega-made version , or report a fraudulent Sega 6. They confirmed I got a fake.
I asked for a refund from the seller. They would if I sent it back, and mail TO Asia is ridiculously expensive, so gave me $3 50 back and I got to keep them.
Now a few questions:
-
Are they of good enough quality to work as a Genesis pad hack?
-
Is there a lack of a mode button as an input when hacked, or did they just have a cheap case with no button at the right finger rest where the mode button is, but the circuitry for the mode button there, but inaccessible normally?
-
Assuming there is no mode button in the circuitry itself, …
3a. … would the lack of a mode button cause certain games to malfunction?
3b. … I can think of 2 titles that use Mode as a functional button and not just a mode set button, Virtua Fighter for 32X and Shadow Squadron for 32X. Any others? -
I am aware that there are Authorized Sega Genesis 6 button controllers are made today by the same company who makes USB/PS3/Switch versions. (No PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One or Wii U.) I currently have 6 6 button pads. WWF Raw for 32X is a game I know uses 4 6-button pads. Only one US game uses more than 5 players, Double Dribble, and that I know doesn’t use any of the extra buttons on a Sega 6. Any Genesis games (even foreign ones, I do have a Genesis Game Genie) use more than 5 controllers, and which ones would help to have all 6 buttons?

I don’t know if any modern authorized 3 button controllers exist, so I have to harvest existing ones. I know of one game that at maximum players would require 3 or more 3 button controllers and would malfunction with a 6 button: Wheel if Fortune Sega CD. Can anyone think of any others?
