He’s the sort of guy who will tell you he doesn’t have all the answers. Then doesn’t realize that every time he speaks he ends up trying to answer things without having any actual answer. The kind of person who hides behind logic because he has no confidence that people will trust or believe him without it.
He’s a smart guy but he doesn’t realize that a game does not need balance as an objective to be entertaining and enjoyable. Balance is something that takes years and years to develop unless it is fundamentally a component of the game (Chess). Everyone wants ‘balance’ but they do not realize what they’re giving up to attain balance. They don’t understand that to achieve such a thing requires homogenization.
I think a lot of us like 3S as a whole. Not just the gameplay. I don’t think 3S even breeds the attitude of ‘playing to win’ so much as ‘playing to have awesome fights’.
Obviously you want to win. But I don’t think that winning is the only objective.

You, WTFAKHAX, are like a combination of me/Deviljin and Dander/Tom Robbins (yall would probably dig him if you aren’t already well-versed), not that Dander can’t go AWALL and inform at the same time himself. Although I am not sure if you accomplish the individual goals as any of us with your nevertheless super-impressive hybrid style. What you trade off for balance, I suppose? Kind of like XCOPY Twelve, or Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat 2. You have a piece of all of us, which intimidates me, but can you ever really top Yun (Dander) or Chun (me - Artayes called me popular, first time anyone’s ever labeled me that, and I’m running with it!!!)?

I’m actually considering picking up Chun my secondary, or even main. I remember when I first started messing around with Ken, I felt like my Day 2 Ken was almost as good against most players as my Day 150 (Hour 800) Gouki due to his higher health, simplicity, SA3 stuff, and more entertaining taunt. And I have played Chun in a few slightly more serious matches in the last week, and I feel the same thing about my Hour 2 Chun, except I’m a lot better now than I was when I first messed with Ken. Gouki could be my longer term project, and Chun could be my “fuck it, I’m playing to win right now” character. Chun’s fierce button > every Gouki ever except Kuroda and JR Rodriguez.
Sirlin did go to MIT, so I don’t think in most senses he is a moron. That said (and I have no real opinion on Sirlin so I’m not describing him here), it can be frustrating to meet someone who is extremely smart in the more obvious ways but who doesn’t have any wisdom/depth/emotional intelligence etc. to go along with it and thus all of his logical/verbal abilities are mostly wasted. Definitely met a few of those, and perhaps Sirlin is like that in your opinion.
Seth K understands the balance thing. Pretty sure I’ve heard him express what you just said a few times. And I totally agree. I preferred vanilla SF4 over most of the later, more balanced versions. Almost the whole cast is mediocre now. And character variety, of course, necessarily results in imbalances, which is totally worth it IMO.
I also totally agree with the "playing to have awesome fights’ thing, and I do think 3S encourages that more than most fighters, but I’ve often felt that way playing others. Playing to have awesome fights is part of why I occasionally reversal uppercut four times in a row even if it costs me the game - sometimes it’s worth it to me to take 80% damage after whiffing three uppercuts just feel the joy and imagine the feelings of my opponent when I land the fourth one right in the face. Or why I went along with your tatsuness the other night, Funland, and just tried to parry as much of it as I could

Gouki is pretty much my secondary nowadays, makoto was off and on for months my 2nd but we really dont mesh well, its not her, its me. I’m still gonna play her and ibuki occasionally, prolly will mess with yun some here and there.
but sure, Chun against good people can be intense, plus ken is gay. I don’t have fun playing him anymore outside ken mirrors, or like vs ryu.
Keep main’n Gouki tho, he is sick.
edit: also, Gouki, Chun, and Ibuki have the coolest taunts imo.

GGS Poe hadn’t played a good long set in 3s in months since life has been keeping my pretty busy so I thought I did fairly well considering. At first I thought you might 10 straight me but I think a settled in pretty well. Obviously you are a better player than me but it seemed like I made so many execution errors early… I think I just have a problem in general with closing out rounds because there were a few where I know I outplayed you but dropped the soap anyway.
Still, that set reminded me why this is my fav SF game… it just flows so damn well, everything’s a mixup, yada yada… all thats been said before I’m sure. I’d love to play more though and iron out some of the kinks in my game though. I think those matches could end up being really really close.
Also Poe’s Chun is ass. My Hugo got in that ass so hard

I’d say Gouki’s taunt is perhaps the most badass. I should use it more often as an actual tactic. Ken’s is just so perfect for him IMO.
Great fights, that was fun. You definitely got into more of the groove later and adapted. I enjoyed our adapting and counter-adapting… that is why I agree with Fanatiq when he says long sets are the way to go.
And yeah, chnchilla is right… my tertiary Chun is garbage. I should have emphasize the “feels like” when I said that I feel like I do nearly as well against her lol.

I don’t know in regards to balance. I think it’s too subjective in so many games. I don’t mind Sirlin but he definitely comes off as a guy who likes to hear himself talk. No doubt. Plus he gave us the term Yomi for shits 'n giggles.
In regards to balance in 3S. I think it’s really balanced except for Chun Li. Just fuck that character. I don’t care who you main, even if it’s the ‘top 8’ that match is still fucking annoying. It just pisses me off looking at all of the dumb priority she has for no particular reason. Obviously the devs didn’t anticipate Kara-throws but jesus christ in regards to everything else she can do. Jumping in on Chun is definitely not in your favor. That’s the only character where I feel like I absolutely cannot jump in because of her retarded priority.
