This is just stupid. It’s a real bad idea to walk around off of the Strip in Vegas, especially at night, and you have to cross I-15 to get to the Strip. Not to mention the insane heat during the day in the middle of July. You’d have to be an idiot to walk considering there are cabs and shuttle buses.
My biggest complaint was the “start time.” We were supposedly supposed to start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, and be at our stations 15 minutes before. Instead we ended up waiting to almost 9. When I asked a staff member what was the hold-up and he just smirked at me and said they were setting up.
Don’t tell people to show up at a certain time and then open up an hour late. That was completely unprofessional on the part of the staff, and that particular staff member was insulting.
Ya the doors opened at like 9:15 and my first game was around 10am. That’s why I suggested that next year, they start at 10am to give themselves time to setup and also let the players rest more.
If Yipes is going to do commentary next year for MvC, please ask him to not fill up 40 minutes of time with “oooh ooh”. He started out with some normal commentary then it just got worse and worse. Sorry Yipes.
Kind of a silly question since I’m talking about what happened at a tournament.
**But all I know is, I was there at 7:45 a.m., exactly when the tournament said I was supposed to be there, and the lobby into the hall was packed by 8 a.m. The policy should be if you can’t get your lazy ass out of bed on time, you deserve to be DQed.
If they wanted to start later, they could have at least opened the doors and let people play casuals for an hour (which they ended up doing anyway) while we wait for all the lazies. Instead they made all the people who were responsible and on-time wait in the lobby, with no chairs and nothing to do.* *Give me a break.
No, I’m thinking the real reason is the *staff *couldn’t get out of bed and set up on time.
 Thanks for an amazing EVO. This was my second Evo and I greatly enjoyed it.
Positives:
-Smaller pools and less wait times was an incredible idea.
(Last year in the 128 man pools I was waiting about an hour after every match. This time barely had to wait at all.)
-Panels were an excellent idea and the few that I went to were really informative and great.
-Having more new games there before they even come out (SFxT,UMvC3,Tekken Tag 2,Skull Girls, UFC) is an amazing thing you guys pulled off.
-The room was or seemed bigger.
-Having two set ups per pool made things go faster.
-Staff and volunteers were very helpful and nice.
-Even though I use pad I really liked the call to band the six axis controllers because it made for lot less confusion and hold ups in the tournament.
Things to work on or advice:
-Have Evo on or closer to the strip.
-Spread players from the same region into different pools or if they are in the same pool spread them out as far as possible.
(I know it’s hard to do but it would be nice. I had to play a player I’ve practiced with a lot we are both from the bay area but technically he’s from a different zip code but it would of been nice to have to play him toward the top of the pool instead of the 3rd match)
-If Evo is going to become more of a convention make sure the main focus is the tournaments. I like people cosplaying, panels, extra events and stuff but main focus should always be the tournaments.
-Have more chairs for Finals. I’m sure that was more of the hotel’s fault not yours but more chairs would equal less people sitting in the isles during finals.
-Also the 3rd strike exhibition became boring for most people pretty fast because it seemed too long. Maybe instead it should not be round robin. You should add a quick event or special match in another game to add more time if you guys were trying to stall time or something; like a UFC3 special exhibition match.
-On the schedule you pick up from the counter where you get your badge make it more clear what station you are at for the pool you are in. Like highlight the station or put in bold instead of the thin grey type. I understood what pool I was in but me and my friends were not sure what station we were in.
Overall you guys did an OUTSTANDING JOB!
Shout outs to the Organizers and staff and volunteers.
I loved Evo this year and I’ll definitely be coming to the next one.
My only suggestion would to have more set-ups for casuals or side tournaments. Sunday was incredibly lacking due to finals, but I see plenty of space left and right.
Edit: I actually heard some of the set-ups were removed due to a fight over a MM. Not sure if this is true.
yeah almost everybody was standing up to watch it like they were in fucking high school or never seen a fight before.
i agree with wizard, nothing should EVER be going on during EVO finals, no side tournies or MM’S, none of that shit.
I actually think that some knuckle heads in the front row stood up and started pointing towards the back and went on like there was something going on in the back and then everybody in the crowd looked back, but there was nothing happening.
I enjoyed the s-kill/Daigo panel where they reviewed one of Daigo’s matches, but I would’ve loved it if the replay was a Super Turbo match instead of SF4. I understand the numbers heavily favor SF4 in this case, but I feel like anyone can learn something from a critical breakdown of SF2 play if explained properly. Even if the example match is really old and he doesn’t know EXACTLY what he was thinking X years ago when he played, I would think Daigo knows the game well enough at this point to analyze his own decisions. I’m sure NKI and s-kill would be able to help maintain general context so the discussion doesn’t become too game-specific.
(I am also a big fan of watching “nothing” [happen] in high-level play)
Is it possible to make all the winners and losers finals a 3/5? This is something that stands out, I think EVO is the only major tourney I know of that has 2/3 for both winners and losers finals.
I really liked being at the Rio. There was a neat Subway that was within walking distance that really helped out with the food budget for the week with $5 Footlongs. The Subway on the strip had the $5 menu at $8.25 and higher; it was simply ridiculous. Others may have money to spend at the pricier places, but it’s preferable to stay at the Rio for the cheap food and then splurge a bit at the Carnival World Buffet now and then. There was also a neat Japanese Mini Mart within walking distance and my buds and I got some good snacks and what not.
If the next venue is on-strip, I don’t want to have to take a shuttle from Harrah’s to Rio, walk to get some sandwiches and snacks, go back to Rio to take the shuttle, then walk back to the venue just so I could have cheap food to keep within budget. Sorry guys, but I just simply prefer the Rio for now.
Otherwise, I’d like to reiterate that I’d like the event to be 4 days mainly to squeeze in other games/series into the mainstage.
I’d like to see the PS3 gone and security so there won’t be a chance that the fire marshall will close down the event because of selfish people not wanting to move from the aisles.
