It’s a nice idea, but that increases the cost of Evo drastically. Let’s look at the situation:
20-30 PS2’s all waiting to be used, right. Running them one game at a time means we have to have 20-30 copies of EVERY GAME so we can facilitate those 20-30 machines. Not only that, but MvC2 needs to be DC, and once games move onto XBox or any of the next gen systems, that means we’ll need 20-30 of those systems and 20-30 of each of those games as well.
By running multiple games at once, we can only require having around 8 copies of each game, and only needing around 8 DCs or XBoxes or whatever we are running things on. Maybe we’ll eventually get there, as we keep purchsing new systems throughout the years, but at the rate new systems are released, we’ll never get to a point where we can buy all these things for the year, unless we start seeing some serious sponsorship. Otherwise, yeah, it’d be a great idea to do.
-On running one game at a time: I and a lot of people would really like to see this happen, but like james said, it’s a cost/equipment issue. I still think the option is worth exploring in the early stages between evo’s.
-On controller configs: For the couple of pools that i ran, I would have had no problem if both players changed buttons twice before every match and reset the game 4 times, if it meant that all the players were actually at the machine at the same time.
IMO button configs are not a waste of time since it’s already allocated as part of the ‘match time’, there is always going to be this misc. block of getting the players setup and ready. I don’t like the hassle/time savings ratio involved in doing anything about controller configs. It would take more time to explain the ‘setup rules’ than to just let them set their buttons.
zig: there is a reason why st is set on free select rather than regular turbo 3. its another goofy capcom thing again of course. turbo 3 and free select turbo 3 are 2 COMPLETELY different speeds. fucking stupid huh? capcom can never get this speed issue right. this isnt a ps1 exclusive blunder either, its the same in the arcade too. its stupid… permanent turbo 3 is waaaaay too fast
To make next years Evo better, I think you should jack up the prices to get in. I mean people are coming from all over the world to play here and im sure they are willing to spend more than 20 bucks to get in and 10 to play in each game. The total cost for me was about $700 (Flight, hotel, food, car rental.) So if im gonna spend 700 bucks just to go there, It’d be fine with me if registration was more. I mean think of the uses for the extra money.
Higher prize money for winners which would probably make more awesome jap players attend… I mean those halo2 guys got like $5,000 for two teams and that wasn’t even the real tournament for Halo2, I think the top teams got to enter in a tournament where the winnings were like $50,000!!! I don’t think anyone got over $3,000 for actual evo games!
More money to rent TV’s and not rely on MLG for the Tv’s because im sure everyone at evo wants to break their little brothers Halo 2 game because MLG.
And lastly, A BETTER EVO. No matter what, you know that the more money that goes to EVO will make a better evo. Am I not right? oh yeah, one more thing, I appreciate the fact that we got to see Street fighter generations b4 anyone else, but uh…WOW… was that a huge let down. And if you laughed the whole time during that movie… your sense of humor is the same as a 10 year old who just learned what intercourse is. “OMG theres a loaf of bread in that grocery bag!!! ITS A WEINER!!! HAHAHAHAH” … that annoyed me the most, anyone agree?
If SRKers want to help, I say let them. When it comes time to start up EVO2K6, make an announcement that you need volunteers… plain and simple. I’m sure some would do it just off the fact it would help EVO run more smoothly.
And it would give someone like me (who is going next year to spectate and meet everyone) a task to do. Shit, even if it’s “make sure this doesn’t get stolen”, then i’d fucking do it. I’ll get a big plank of wood and write “stealers will be beaten” on it, and beat people in the back with it.
Also, if you guys don’t have enough consoles to go around, why not ask SRKers if they could donate it to the tournament, and their entry fee would be waivered or reduced if you boost the price of entry? It sounds like it could work, but then again… i’ve never run a tournament before.
Pretty true. This is something that could be much more easily done at a smaller tournament than at an Evo. It’s an ideal (just like it would be ideal to run Swiss style rather than double-elimination) but equipment is definitely an issue here.
Japan only does SBO with 8 machines or something, but they also already have the tournament narrowed down to 64 people each :xeye:
Of course when fighting games start popping up on next-gen systems, it’ll be even harder since you’ll have to start the whole process of collecting consoles over. Either way, it seems like the only way to do pools and finish in a reasonable time is to make them larger and more difficult to finish out of, so as to narrow down the final bracket to much fewer people. TX Showdown this year I believe ran 8 (bigger) pools and took 2 from each, so double elimination bracket was 16 people for each tournament. Granted, you can’t use these numbers at Evo but I think that narrowing the final bracket down to 32 people or less would be more ideal. Yes, you’ll have some upsets of people making it not out of pools, but whatever–the idea is to weed out the masses and cut the player pool to the “best of the best” so to speak.
With the way pools were so small at Evo this year, there were of course by the odds a few pools with no exceptionally great players in them and this ended up making too massive of a double elimination bracket. If the pools are big enough, you will guarantee that the players who most deserve to play in the final bracket will make it there and nobody that doesn’t. Granted, some great people won’t even make it out of the pools this way, but it contributes better to the smoothness of the tournament and the quality of the matches that the spectators get to watch.
Of course, you had way more players show up than expected, which threw off your estimates–but, I think the only way to improve things with the bracket system is to make pools harder.
Halo2 also had a $50/person entry, 200 paid entries, and the winners only got $2500 for the entire team (4 man), evo seemed to have better prize money. Not to mention MLG runs like 10 tournaments with high entry fees so it works out to pay a large top 3 prize at nationals, evo is one tournament. It’s just a totall different setup.
I didn’t go to this because My Check didn’t come through and No KOF 2K2. Next Year Should Really Have New Games. Playing those Same Games get Boring. Next Year They should have SNK Games Added In For the SNK Players Like Myself. They Should Have at Next Year Evolution 2006, King of Fighters 2002 and 2003 for Playstation 2. So We SNK Players could show our Stuff like the Capcom and Namco Players. KOF 2002 and 2003 Should Become Offical Tournaments. Pads and Sticks Only. The Makers of Evo Should Really think about this.
Did you miss the voting for sidegames? Where none of the games got that many paid entries? And kof2k2 did win. But you had you’re chance and you didn’t go.
kof2k2 had its chance, and no one from the snk community wanted to step up and pay for their vote to get it in evo, all that was needed is 100 paid entries, i would think there would be more than that coming to evo, but i guess not. IIRC, i dont think 2k2 even got 100 unpaid votes. thats just not enough people. besides, there was a pretty decent sized kof2k2 side tourney going on friday night…
Even so, I’d agree with increasing the entry fees a little. Most people aren’t going to mind paying a small bit extra and it will make the prizes sweeter, and hence more incentive.
In addition to a separate room, the BYOC needs to be **ALL 4 DAYS ** again. I couldn’t believe it was only Fri & Sat. That fact alone made Evo24k better than this year.
This was my first EVO and it was probably the best time I’ve ever had. I’ll definitely come back next year. The only gripe I had was when I realized everyone basically only had one BYOC day (Friday). Saturday all the tv’s were taken up by MLG members. Not to bash Halo or anything, but it was a little absurd. Other than that, I hope next year’s EVO is the best one yet. Keep up the good work.
