And therein lies the one major problem with the idea.
I think he just means that the highest placing player that isn’t Chris G or Justin Wong gets an extra fifty bucks for no raisin.
Basically what Cellsai explained, you just keep a list of previous entrants for the prize and they are not eligible for future prizes (EDIT: I added Cellsai’s explanation to a spoiler at the bottom of this post so you don’t have to go hunting for it). The problem of people just changing their name is a real one, and tbh I have no definite solution. The two options that immediately occur to me are:
-
Just work on an honor system for the most part. You still keep track of everyone’s alias, but you don’t rigorously check that people nominating themselves as new players are telling the truth beyond this. You could still check the IDs for the prize winner and/or the top 5 or so new players and keep a record of their names so that at least the major contenders can’t lie. This isn’t foolproof and money makes people do crazy things, but I don’t see us having too much of a problem simply because the prize won’t be that big and most of the better players that actually have the chance are going to want the prestige of getting their real alias up there anyway. If we find that a lot of people are trying to cheat the system, then you could look at other options when that happens.

Just ID check all new entrants and keep track of their names instead of just their aliases. This might be impractical simply due to the extra time it would take, though after the first few majors it probably wouldn’t take that much longer each time.
Also the first tournament or two would rely on people who are experienced players not nominating themselves as new players simply because the prize isn’t really there for them, but over time that becomes a non-issue.
EDIT: Cellsai’s explanation:

Chris Hu please!
No f*cking Ultradavid period.
Stickied for great justice.
The hardest part about this was knowing about it all weekend and not being able to say anything. I’ve just been talking to TOs trying to get the game on the bill, and hearing “I’m just not hearing anything about the game” and thinking “oh, you just don’t know… you. just. don’t know.”
This is great news. I wasn’t even planning on attending Evo this year, but I’m going to have to now. I wouldn’t miss Skullgirls at Evo. Gonna start training now, I’m super out of practice.
I’d love to do the commentary for top 8. And you don’t have to worry about me being in top 8 because I’m assssssssssss.
Instead of a bunch of people randomly asking if they can commentate… How about a fight… Er contest?
Those people that want to be considered for commentating sg make a vid of them commentating a video… It isnt a perfect plan cause people can write out their stuff in advance… But for the most part i think we will be able to see the fakes for who they are and those that are actually good commentators… But may not be known in the community get a fair shot…
And last but not least, it could be a poll vote so it would be the communities choice… Win win for sg.
Gotta get on that training regimen. Things are getting serious…
Instead of new players, just do an Amateur bracket and DQ top placing players.
That’ll encourage low/mid level players to enter.
Seconded.
This reminds me of something Mass used to do for Soulcalibur. At every local they ran a $1 newbie tournament. You were only allowed to enter the newbie tournament if you’ve never won it before. I thought that was a neat idea.
We probably can’t really do that for Evo, because there’s a lot of people who haven’t won Evo. But maybe we could do something like that for Skullbats.

I nominate mike z and i to commentate. the banter and knowledge we have… or i think i have… is unmatched!
Just get someone who is not clueless about the game to commentate and its all good
I want Sanchez and James Chen.
Show him some pony porn again.

Hey man, Ultradavid is a cool cat.
HE HE
HE
Cool cat yes. Still honestly, he’s a mediocre commentator. What saves him is his general knowledge of fighting games. He’s an excellent commentator for Street Fighter. But for other games like Marvel (f*ck I hate when he commentates for Marvel) and Skullgirls he tends to repeat and summarize rather than analyze gameplay.
