EVO West & SBO Quals (3s/ST) at Family Fun Arcade: 7/19-7/20

Overview

Event: Super Battle Opera USA West Coast Qualifiers, Evolution West Regional Qualifiers
Venue: Family Fun Arcade, Granada Hills, CA
Date/Time: From Saturday, July 19th to Sunday, July 20th

Introduction:
Sorry for the late post on this- several things had to fall in place before I could make this announcement. Anyways, Family Fun Arcade will once again be hosting Super Battle Opera qualifiers for 3rd Strike and Super Turbo, as well as Evolution West qualifiers for top seeds at Evolution World in Las Vegas!

Rules for both are different this year. For SBO, Family Fun Arcade will only be able to cover 50% of the airfare. However, a portion of Evo West proceeds (10%) as well as additional fundraiser tournaments will go towards covering the remainder of these costs. As for Evo West, qualifying does not guarantee a free ride into semis as it did last year, but instead will secure you an optimal seed in your pool/bracket. Since Japanese players tend to be seeded the same way, by winning at Evo West you minimize your chances of being stuck in a 'Bracket of Death" with a high proportion of top-level players. Don’t let it happen to you!

3s team

Sorry, could you clarify what "Waseda (Newton) " format is?

2v2 Waseda Format is as follows:

Team 1: Albert and Bob
Team 2: Andrew and Bill

Scenario 1: Unanimous Win
Match 1: Albert (Lose) vs Andrew (Win)
Match 2: Bob (Lose) vs Bill (Win)
Decision: Team B Wins

Scenario 2: Tiebreaker
Match 1: Albert (Win) vs Andrew (Lose)
Match 2: Bob (Lose) vs Bill (Win)
Match 3: Albert (Win) vs Bill (Lose)
Decision: Team A Wins

As for Judgment, I know it favors certain characters (Chun, Oro and Yun because of # of hits in their supers is a huge factor) and penalizes more conservative playing (oldschool footsies and poking) but if we have multiple stations it might be a headache to manage it with a playoff. As Sabre said, it’s a rare occurrence so I don’t think it’ll be a problem, and because both Evo and SBO (i think) use Judgment, it’d make sense to play by their rules anyhow (given that if it came down to Judgment, we’d want to have a team that can best take advantage of that rule.)

**Addendum: Penalty Calls on Non-Material Incidents **
Halting a match for a non-material incident (in otherwords, an occurence that does not directly affect gameplay, i.e.: Character Color) will result in a forfeiture of the match. Material Incidents such as faulty controls, faulty video, or physical interference are valid grounds for the halting of a match.

just like MWC in June…

is this on an arcade or console?

I assume since it is at FFA it is 100% arcade.

We will have console stations available as well as arcade. In the case that a game cannot be feasibly be held on arcade (lack of stations), console versions can be used. Because of this, we have some flexibility on what games we can hold (read: we’re accepting suggestions if you guys can bring the consoles and the games).

Arlieth, you might want to talk to CHoi about the Speed 3 thing on ST, he told me the qualifiers are supposed to be on FREE SELECT for this, but the FINALS in Japan are Speed 3. I had to change MWC to Free Select.

And I think you’re in for a whole heap of trouble if you start using ANY console version of these games for SBO qualifiers…arcade and console in the qualifier But if console is partially used for EVO West, that would make sense…

All Japanese tournaments use Judgment iirc so might as well try to stick to their rules since it’s their tournament.

And good shit, Arlieth!

SBO ST finals will use Japan turbo 3 which is about equivalent to US turbo 2. If you want it strictly by Japan rules, then the qual should be US turbo 2, single elimination, etc. But I think this is a bit too strict. We can localize the qualifier rules a bit to fit US standards.

US ST players are used to free select or turbo 3. To leave more freedom to the players, I suggest free select. The players can come to an agreement on preferred speed. If they can not agree, coin toss can determine speed.

Also, I think it makes sense to try and use arcade only for SBO qualifiers. Console versions can be used for the regular EVO qualifiers.

But I’m sure Arlieth will do what is best for the event.

So it’s possible ST could be held on console?

Yikes.

Well, if Free Select has been the tradition, I don’t see any problem with honoring it, it just seemed kind of strange. In retrospect, since Evo is allowing Free Select, we should be using the same ruleset. SBO is weirder in that they use Turbo 2, I’ll have to see what we did about last year’s qualifiers.

PS: No ST on console. I think all of us know that the complexity behind an arcade-perfect port of ST can read longer than the quest for the Holy Grail.

Addendum: Penalty Calls on Non-Material Incidents
Halting a match for a non-material incident (in otherwords, an occurence that does not directly affect gameplay, i.e.: Character Color)
