I figure since most of the Smashboards kids seem too scared to make a thread, I will. I might as well post first because I have positive things to say.
I watched the final match between CPU and Ken and that was hype. Keits, you did a fantastic job commenting for the game and sharing information that most of us wouldn’t know anything about. The match certainly showed skill and mastery of the game, with the smashballs making for fantastic critical situations.
All this has made me realize that Smash is not the game for me, even if I can tolerate it without items. It just doesn’t do the game justice and if I don’t personally enjoy what makes the game unique, I should play something else. But that doesn’t stop me from watching and enjoying it.
I think it’ s an embarrassment that the smash community has attacked these matches so harshly, when they simply could ignore them and move on. I think theirs a lot of pride on the line with SWFs and for many of the players… Particularly the ones who post stupid circle-jerk youtube comments instead of actually being good and playing the game. I think the rules culture is just an act of elitism by the community (even if items off if perfectly valid, their conduct about it is ridiculous) and I salute you for sticking to your guns.
I look forward to seeing more matches when the DVDs are released.
The way Evo turned out made me happy. It really makes me wish I went. Next year, perhaps, I’ll have enough saved up for it.
The finals were great matches. Ken and CPU both fought great and CPU deserved his victory. I hope this inspires more items tournaments or paves the way for more of an acceptance of items. Though that’s obviously a tough road since I’m told that some still agreed on no-items anyway during EVO.
Wish people would open their minds about it. Those youtube comments were all very aggravating.
The commentator was Keits, though? Did a good job.
I wish I could have been there to rape all those swf scrubs in no items matches just to beat them at their own game and then hear them cry even more when I beat them at items on matches:rofl:
Can’t wait for the dvd’s plz no one ruin it for me =(
- This was mainly where that assertion came from (the comments). Unless I misunderstood and this match was at a different tournament.
That was at Midwest Championships, formerly called Evo-North. The person running the bracket there doesnt like smash and didnt care what people did with the settings if they agreed. so instead of testing the game and people’s limits, all we got was people playing in their comfort zone.
Ryzen is a VERY good player whom is less vocal about his opinion, but will play either items on or off.
Uh not really bitch cuz swf’ers suck at all other fighting games whereas I’m pretty damn good at brawl and have won a few tourneys here in ny. Hows the brawl scene in germany?
Local gamestore tourneys don’t count.
Why should SWF be good at other games when the board is only providing talk for Smash? They have the 2 Smash games (brawl not counting yet) and that’s where they are better than the rest of the world (SSB: Isai; SSBM: M2K, Azen, PC Chris, Ken). And I bet they will take the cake for Brawl in some years when more advanced techs are discovered (again by SWF).
We have a great Brawl scene in Germany. There was a big tournament some weeks ago that attracted players from other european countries, but apparently that’s not what you wanted to hear lol.
Oh, and tell me how Justin Wong placed in Brawl at EVO.
Again, that’s a scrubby statement. Of course they take away some competitiveness but it’s not like they require no skill to use them. But needless to say that it’s better to turn them off.
Did you read the dude’s posts especially the one above me? He’s a fucking dumbass scrub I didn’t need to use a worm on the line he just went for the hook cuz it’s shiny:rofl:
Seriously though I think both ways of playing are valid; No items play emphasizes knowledge of your own character’s strengths and weaknesses as well as your opponents more so it has a certain depth items play will never have. While playing with items adds it’s own unique layer of depth because characters may be better/worse with items involved and you have to know how to use each item appropriately especially in conjunction with the stage you’re on.
I wish both ways of playing could co-exist but that’s never going to happen because the people like myself who think with and without items are both equal are in the extreme minority as far as I know. And swf people are so close minded and ignorant they refuse to even begin acknowledging that items could possibly have a place in their competitive scene.
If swf people think items are so cheap and take no skill to win with then why didn’t they show up at evo en mass to prove it? cuz if items are so cheap and overpowered then it should be easy money for them.
If I were running evo I would announce brawl for evo09 but not say whether there would be items or not and then 1 minute before the brackets were made I would flip a coin: heads the tourney is with items, tails is without.
FYI in terms of items play I think all items should be allowed except recovery stuff, starman, exploding stuff (random explosions are retarded we all know that), and MAYBE pokeballs/assist trophies everything else is cool with me.
…

…
YES even fan is cool for items play because roughly 30% of the cast have infinite cg’s most of which can lead into spikes offstage so if that’s allowed why should fan be allowed as well? Don’t forget fan isn’t a true infinite most character can get out of it it’s just harder for some then others…unless your ganon:rofl:
Hmm, didn’t know it was characteristic for SRK to be called scrub by someone who entered a 2D Fighter tournament with a pad and then got laughed on when he tried to play on a stick and failed. :\
It’s not as easy as you think it is. No matter how you look at it, items are random.
Imagine your opponent gets you off the stage and you try to recover. Then suddenly a smashball or another strong item spaws right next to your opponent. Suddenly it’s not the balance-issue you mentioned but mere luck. And if such situations decide the outcome of a tournament where big money is on the line then…well, decide for yourself. And that’s exactly what SWF critisized (not that “items take no skill to use”) and that’s also what James Chen and Ponder agreed with on SWF.
Items are random, yes, in that they favor nobody. Your example is also very poor, because if a Smash Ball spawns next to the opponent and they go for it, they’re not going to be edgeguarding. You can recover and then steal the Smash Ball right back from them. The item that would affect the situation you said most is a quick projectile-type like maybe a Pokeball, Bat, Fan, etc. Provided they have the time to realize it’s there, grab it, jump forward and aim it down at you before you get to the ledge where you are invincible.
True, but the other hand the no-item rule favors nobody too and it redeems the possibility that one player gets lucky twice or even more whereas the other player doesn’t get lucky at all.
So you rather want to get a try for an edgeguard (which isn’t as easy to do as in melee anymore) than a free smashball (it’s not like it’s that easy to steal back the SB)? :wgrin:
If you are knocked off the edge and ANY item spawns near your opponent while you are helplessly recovering… he EARNED it. end of story. you both know an item wil appear every 10 to 14 seconds. dont lose control of the stage or your character to avoid this situation.
Ill type more when i get home. You are free to debate, but the above point is not to be used as an example of randomness again.
if only id rolled a 3 id be backgammon champion, right?
goes to vermillion city and purchases super rod from pokemart I hope I catch another the dude! But even when I do I won’t be able to sell or trade it cuz the dude is FREEEEEEE.
Keits has it right, if an item fucks up your shit too bad deal with it…or you can make bitchass excuses.
