Evo monitor comparable options

Are there any other asus monitors other than the vh236h that are just as good in terms of input lag and response time? I know Asus has a bunch of new monitors that are LED that seem to look similar to the vh236h. Can any of these monitors be considered just as good or in the same league?

I just want to get an idea of any other options besides the vh236h.

Thanks.

subscribed, I have the same question

Same here. =)

No replies yet. hmm. I thought there might be someone from the evo2k community who run the tournaments that could vouch on the response time and input lag on some of asus’s other monitors or any other monitors that might be in the same realm as the vh236h.

I’ve read info on some monitors getting real close to the specs of the vh236h but nothing definitive. So far I’ve just read about alot of opinions.

Any help would be appreciated.

at the current price of the v236h (ive found em as low as 100 already with free shipping) people havent had the need to look for anything. Well atleast for running tournaments

The only problem with the vh236h is that it doesn’t have component which makes recording footage basically impossible. (If there is a way – please reply!!)

Well at Project-Failure we use the VH236H on stream and record off it. We have it going to a black magic via HDMI which does stream then from black magic to PVR-1212 with component for recording. For composite I dunno kinda SOL with that I think.

YouTube - TheProjectfailure’s Channel The newest tournament is with the above mentioned setup. We messed around with settings and stuff and youtube kicked us down to 480P instead of 720P, but the videos still look nice.

As for lag free monitors I’d say anything with 2-3ms response time in its specs sheet will = lag free.

Can you describe your setup in more detail please? What black magic device do you use? So it goes HDMI from PS3 to black magic, then component to your recorder (which is what?) and HDMI into the monitor?

Pretty sure from those videos they’re using 360, at least thats what the buttons looks like in the menus, which I’ve used the same setup to record with the evo monitor using Black Magic.

However, using PS3 you cannot record from HDMI because it uses HDCP and it’s protected so it should not work

#6 after these 5 is the VH236

I personally would have bought the LG Flatron instead of the VH236 had it not been sold out everywhere at the time. I think by now it’s actually discontinued…

So it goes Xbox -component-> black magic device -HDM-> vh236h

Is that right?

What’s the exact black magic device?

Thanks in advance!

for project-failure we use the following devices.

xbox 360

vh236h monitor

blackmagic intensity hd (this is for the stream only, we do not use this card for archive)

hauppauge hd-pvr (this is archive only)

hdmi to component video scaler ( Amazon.com: HDMI to Ypbpr Component RGB / VGA Converter: Electronics )

we also have a few hdmi splitters.

we run the setup as follows

xbox 360
-> Hdmi splitter
->Blackmagic intensity
-> asus vh236h (the display the players are using)

in turn the intensity has an output hdmi or component port, we use this to goto a 2nd splitter that runs to our spectator tv, and the hauppauge hd-pvr, we save our archive videos off the hauppauge hd-pvr.

Alternatively, you could use the hdmi to component video scaler mentioned above to go from the main splitter directly into the hd-pvr for archiving purposes.

as noted above, you cannot capture off hdmi from a ps3 because of the hdcp, so you’re only choice is to have some type of conversion box (hdfury2 makes one too, although it was a bit pricey)

we have not tested our video scaler box with a ps3 yet, but it does support hdcp so in theory it should work.

any questions, email admin@project-failure.org

Flatpanelshd.com has a similar list for panels that have very low input lag and quick response times.
TV & monitor recommendations - FlatpanelsHD

It recommends (in no order):

Alienware OptX AW2310

LG W2363D

Asus VG236H

Samsung 2233RZ

ASUS VW246H

Dell 2209WA

You can check out the reviews on the flatpanelshd.com website.

These reviews look good. Can anyone vouch on the accuracy of these reviews?

No.

Response time has nothing to do with input lag. At all.

Given they provide absolutely no information on how they rated input lag, I’d say they aren’t accurate at all. They most likely went by feel, which is obviously not an objective measure.

BTW, there is a giant thread that discusses HDTVs/Monitors in Tech Talk. You might want to check it out.

do you mind sharing where?

The reviews are in the main part of the website. You have to click the reviews tab to get to that area. The reviews show low input lag and good response time. I just want to know if anyone agrees with these reviews.

Thanks.

Sorry for the delay in responding,

I’m using the blackmagic Intensity Pro PCI-E version:
Blackmagic Design: Intensity

I’m actually doing the setup like this:
XBox: HDMI video out + RCA audio out. I broke the casing on the standard Component out plug for the 360 so that both it and the HDMI can be plugged in at the same time; its a common hack/mod you can see online if you want

Video goes directly into the Blackmagic HDMI in

Audio goes to an audio mixer, which captures microphone input, then outputs it as a single source

That audio gets plugged into the RCA Audio in of the Blackmagic HDMI

The settings on the BlackMagic is HDMI Video and RCA Audio

For output it I just used the passthrough signal on the Blackmagic card to go to the Monitor.

I only use this setup for Capturing and commentating or streaming other people playing, nothing serious like tournament play, so I never really had to verify the delay on the passthrough. I know personally it wasn’t noticeable but that doesn’t mean it’s not there, so I’d go with an HDMI splitter if I was going to use this setup for a tournament especially because it probably passes through the audio commentary to the monitor (can’t fully remember if this is true or not).

Thanks for posting this!
