Personally I think we should be able to pick ultra based on what character we’re fighting, though I don’t think we should be able to counter pick another ultra, perhaps if people are really going to be anal about it, after character selection they can opt for a ultra blind pick after seeing the character.
Winner should be able to change ultras just to help curve the usefulness of counter picking.
OK, We have blind picking as a measure to prevent turtling on the select screen and counter picking on the first match.
however after the first match counter picking is allowed/expected but still frowned upon, but still legal because we don’t want people to suffer just because they ran into a bad matchup.
the issue is ultra selection, something a player get once (maybe twice) per round, and some ultras may be better in some matchups or useless in others. i think this point is more important than the fact that ultra 1 can be used to punish ultra 2. and thus shouldnt be a blind pick, and the player should have the right to choose their ultra after seeing who the opponents character is.
you can do 2 blind picks, one for character then a second one for ultra if you want to prevent a counter pick for ultra selection.
if the loser then changes character they then have a chance to counter pick both the ultra and the character.
if the winner can change their ultra they can at least defend against the counter pick by using an appropriate ultra thats not useless in the matchup.
and make the winner pick first if they do change.
this is fair, counter picking sucks, and it looks dreadful.
i dont see why the losing player should be allowed such an advantage.
And I don’t see why someone who won should have such an advantage. If the loser gets a change to pick a good counter, then why should the winner be able to counter the counter? Shouldn’t the counter pick end with the loser?
If you are a fighting a character with two selectable Ultras, then you should be prepared to fight the character equipped with either Ultra; they are part of the character after all, they just can’t have both at the same time. Counterpicks aren’t even close to nullified with Ultra picks either. 98% of the time the better player will win, barring luck and unknown tricks (Ibuki’s command dash to Yoroitoshi comes to mind).
With the changing of Ultras, matchups become tighter and characters have more opportunities to fight evenly. That was Capcom’s goal as stated in the development blogs. Of course you can say “well just wait for the third match before switching your ultra!” but that’s just a waste of your time and the tournament organizer’s. If your opponent was going to win or lose to that character + ultra combined with your altered playstyle (due to reading, reaction and analysis) you might as well get it over with.
Players aren’t guaranteed to lose or come close to losing because they face a bad ultra. They’re much more likely to lose against an entire character, which is a very significant change, which is why we only allow the loser to shift characters after the first game.
I just noticed Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is going to be played in widescreen.
Can we please get this changed to original 4:3?
the was wasn’t meant for widescreen and feels very weird when in the corner trying to guard break or dodging projectiles.
I know it makes the game look better since it fills up the entire screen but it messes with the gameplay.
Wow I was not even aware. yes, please set it to 4:3 as widescreen does make weird things happen in the corners too.
for the current topic at hand I also think if the winner can change ultra, it should be before the loser picks their char.
oh god, yes change it to 4:3. also it should be classic sprites not the HD sprites although i think this is less important
I just tried playing some matches in widescreen mode. Its harder to do guardbreaks and sent unblockables this way becomes it seems like the character is coming in sooner then he really is due to widescreen.
I’ve played widescreen before and it seems some situations in the corner act differently the regularly. you could probably find some vids on youtube and characters getting moved into the corner happens in widescreen when it shouldn’t
lol the fuck is all this booshit? why are ppl complaining about counterpicking? this has been around since the beginning of competitive sf.
if you win first game, you are ALREADY up 1 game. why you should you get anymore of an advantage by conterpicking ultra?
If i lost first game, i should get every advantage possible in second game (i.e. counterpick if neccessary, and that includes picking a character that null’s your character ultra useless). thats why we do multiple game set and not best of one japanese style.
There will be situations where the winner will wait to see what u pick next to change ultras, with all of what’s happening the loser will forget to wait for the winner to pick first
Booooooooooooooooooo
In that case, it’s the loser’s fault for forgetting to have the winner pick first.
sorry but with this being most people first major (with the nerves of losing first) I can see that the loser will hover around the next character almost forgetting that the winner can change ultras
Why widescreen for MvC2? It really screws over characters that use wall-bounce (Strider) since the parallaxed background makes it really hard to be certain exactly where the wall line is in competitive matches. It screws up Magneto’s corner resets, it increases the advantage on guard break / incoming character decisions to the character onscreen since they can see what you’re about to come out with even before anything can take effect, and other tactical madness. I would heartily encourage sticking with 4:3.
You shouldn’t be able to switch Ultras. You won with X, stick with X. Your opponent is supposed to beat what just beat him, knowing everything he just learned about that matchup.
It was a error on mvc2. Its been corrected.
