I’m planning to go to EVO for the first time. 3-4 of my friends are interested to go to Evo as well. For that reason, I have some questions to ask.
What hotel/motel stay would you recommend for the cheapest pricing and/or nearest to the event?
If we just spectate, the grand finals, what do we have to do? Does EVO charge to attend or spectate?
My bro and I want to play SFxT 2v2. Would the event charge us $50 for both to enter and 10 buck each to play?
Are there any other tips or helpful hints for newbies going to EVO?
most people will agree that Imperial Palace is the best deal for this year and in 2010, since its literally right across the street from caesars and significantly cheaper
however, most people agree that staying in the same place as the event adds to the experience. but caesars is that $$$ so its understandable…
do not go to evo and spectate (which is free). this is the capcom world championships, you would do yourself a disservice to not test yourselves and enter the games you care about.
caesar’s buffet has a 50 dollar buffet deal that gives you unlimited access for 24 hours (note: it isnt open 24 hours…but while its open in that 24 hour span you have run of the buffet)
room with either several people or find a room with people looking for roommates…great way to meet people/add to the experience and it cheapens your hotel costs
In regards to hotel pricing, I know about a dozen people who have been to Vegas, and I have been looking into it for some time now. Some hotels to consider, that are walking distance and more reasonably priced, are as follows (I’m staying for a full week, the prices are from 3rd to checkout on the 10th):
If I plan on taking a console set-up for my room, how do I pack it along with clothes and stuff… i.e. should I take a bigger suitcase and put the console in the box, in the suitcase, and a back-pack with my stick and other random stuff.
not so important, if I want to buy a PS3 stick at the venue and get it dual-modded, how early should I get there compared to timing of pools?
To make it simpler lol, how do I pack with Clothes, Console(360), Stick, and then possibly another stick after purchasing one at EVO??
Depends on mode of travel. Sounds like you’ll be flying. Well, to be honest, I’m not sure what is you packing habits, how much you plan to change or wear during your stay, but you can start by deciding what you plan to take (e.g., 2 pairs of jeans, 4 t-shirts, 5 pairs of socks, etc) Get a bag you already own, pack it, then attempt to pack your console.
In the past, I have packed pant/jeans on the bottom console on top wrapped with at least 2 tshirts, then other shirts on top, rolled up socks stuff around the sides of the console (to include skivvies, roll those suckers up) If the top/lid portion of the bag has a zipper underneath to store more clothes, toss a few more tshirts (folded of course), shorts, etc, then close your bag/suitcase. If you’re uncomfortable with checking your baggage because of your console, then toss it into a backpack and take it aboard as carry on. You can hand carry the stick as they should be plenty of places to stuff it in the overhead bin. If you can, you can even pack the stick in the bag as well, upside down or if you have the room, next to your console, then lay clothes over the stick. So get to packing and see what you can get to fit now!
Usually the SRK Tech crew (they’ll have a both) know that you’re interested in getting your stick dual-modded. Matt and a few others will be available. They’ll do it on the spot and will hold on to it until you’re ready to pick it up after your matches or in between pools. They will probably start taking people’s sticks Thursday evening if you can find them or ask on the tech thread.
If you have managed to pack your console/stick in one bag/suitcase, then another stick can just be carry on.
Hope this helps you a little. Oh man… one year Dios -X- and I flew out of San Diego, and this guy had this huge duffel bag with his PS3, two sticks, games, clothes, etc… The only issue he had, was that the bag had cheap straps and because of the weight, he ended up dragging the damn thing. So to warn you… if you go that route, make sure you have good/strong straps and wheels.
It’s freaking EVO! Enter at least in something for the experience. It’s like our Disney trip. Got to ride the rides and take your picture with Mickey Mouse, right? Each participant is charged an entrance fee, which is now $70, then $10 per game.
If you do a search, Koop has posted a noob guide for EVO. But I’ll just drop the basics here for you, then you can search for the full thing.
Talk to people! You know that fellow you’ve replied to on these boards who also is going to EVO? Plan to meet up in person and maybe get some games in. Top players aren’t jerks, so if you want to say hi and all that stuff, just approach them. They are people like you and me.
Keep fresh! Yes… don’t be like 40% of the people in the hall who get musky and don’t do anything about it. It’s going to be hot, so plan accordingly. Buy/bring a wash cloth if you’ll be walking around outside or down the strip. Bring a change of undershirts and WEAR undershirts so you don’t sweat through your main clothes. When your pit sweat dries, it’s not going to smell rosy, my friend. Go to your room, and change and may spray on some Axe or something.
Food is expensive. If you brought enough cash and can afford it, good. If you’re on a budget, then try to buy some snack and ration it throughout the day. We’re going to be playing in matches all day anyway, but you’ll get the chance to enjoy one real meal, so why not make that dinner? Each hotel has some kind of food court. Get that $1/$2 Burger or fries… whatever you eat.
Hydate! Drinks lots of water. The hall will have water stations everywhere with cups. Also, if you do end up getting hungry and you have a match coming up, drink some water. Water will fill you up and can help suppress your hunger.
Sleep. Umm… I’m not familiar with that term in Vegas, but do try to get some sleep, especially if you have early pools. You will get disqualified if you don’t show up for your match(es). So try to come in from hitting the strip at a decent hour.
Gear/personal belongings. Don’t trust anyone with holding onto your crap. If you can, leave anything you won’t be using in your hotel room’s closet. Keep your money in your front pocket, don’t lend your stick out to anyone unless they are going to be nearby, your know them, or whatever. If you’re comfortable with lending out you stuff, then by all means.
Hotel rooms. The more people you can find to room with, the cheap your share will be. This applies mostly to those on a budget. If you aren’t cool rooming with strangers, that’s cool too, but we’re all a community, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t dishonest people on SRK. If you go this route, try to get to know them first via phone calls, text, pms.
Grand Finals. This is open to everyone. So if you want to get some good seats, be sure to be at the hall early on Sunday. Usually the first game starts around 9 or so. If you only plan to catch the last main game (AE and Marvel) there will not be available seats and you’ll be either standing in the back, or grabbing some floor.
Like I said… there is a lot more if you search for the old threads.
For spectators or players who will be eliminated very fast like me (casual player here),
are they some consoles out of the tournament available for us, so we can play for fun ?
Got 4 nights at the Imperial Palace for $170~ before splitting with roomies. I highly suggest staying there, especially considering we’re rarely going to be in our rooms during the weekend.
It’s called the BYOC area. Bring Your Own Console. There will be setups towards the back for players to bring in their NeoGeo, DC, SNES, etc… some players bring their personal arcade cabinets to EVO!
Oh… and another thing. If you have a suitcase/bag with the zipper that can be locked, USE IT! That way, you don’t have to worry about your valuables as much. Other than your console/stick, not sure why you would bring anything else, other than your phone and camera/camcorder.
