Before I post, I just wanted to say again that I appreciate what inkblot and the evo staff does. I am critical of many of the decisions they’ve made over the years, and think their priorities are messed up, but those guys bust their asses and put a lot into making evo happen year after year. Their hearts are in the right place, but I think over the years they’ve taken a paternalistic attitude towards the community that has damaged the prestige of the tournaments. Regardless, I’d like to support you guys, thanks for your dedication.
That said, here’s my 2 cents on the game lineup:
SSF4 and T6: Ok, I get this. I could go into a long tangent on why I think including brand-new games like SSF4 is bad, but let’s not go down that road for now.
HDR: This should not have been a lock. Inkblot says that last year’s turnout is the reason for including it, but this answer tells me either evo staff is not being straight with us or they didn’t give selection much thought. Here’s why HDR got a big turnout last year:
-PPL paid $40 to enter SF4
-chances are, they had HDR on their next gen console
-HDR would only cost them $10 more to enter
-HDR is not hard to play
-Why not?
Using last year’s entries as a proxy for community interest, in a year when the only current next-gen fighting games available were HDR and SF4, is TERRIBLE reasoning. At the least, include marvel and this game in a separate polling and see what happens. By the way, I dislike both of these games.
(My conspiracy theory: Evo staff orgasms for ST/HDR. There’s no way on earth an evo would be held without one of those two on the docket as long as they are in charge.)
Blazblue: If Aksys offered you sponsor money to include it, then tell us straight up and we’ll accept it. Otherwise, it’s inexcusable to include an obsolete game, after we’ve learned year after year that it doesn’t work.
Tatsunoko: Same thing as Aksys applies re:sponsorship. Otherwise, I can understand the logic, but only if that logic is: promote new games at all expense. Which is a terrible reason to include a game in a player-run tournament, but again, let’s not get too involved in that.
Player’s choice tournament: Love the idea. Hate the fact that all the dedicated sub-communities are going to have to fight each other tooth and nail for this spot. I thought all of the evo games were supposed to be players choice?
I hope you come up with a good way to keep this from being rigged.
Women’s Tourney: A lot of very good arguments against this have been said. As long as it’s the 9 AM tournament, letting everybody else sleep in for a bit, I don’t have a problem with it.
(Having 9 AM grand finals at all should be ended btw. Having a tourney this early is the best way to kill crowd hype for that tournament)
