Evo 2010 Game Announced Live on SRK Podcast @ 7PM PST!

This is a great point, which is why I think it’s important to address the issue of women in the FGC, even if you disagree that this tournament is the best way to do it. Keits and Ski are both good guys and I know they didn’t mean anything by the comments, but there is a background noise of inappropriate comments and innuendo across the ENTIRE community that makes it tough for women to feel like they’re part of the FGC. By explicitly announcing an event designed for women we are trying to change the tone, or at least get people to wake up and realize that the community can be more hospitable to those outside our core demographic. This is not something that’s going to happen over night. It’s a process.

hell yeah can’t wait for that mbaa

i love those broken xxx-ism combos they are so hot.

“xxx-ism” is just a word what matters is what you do weither it is good or bad. example being that I like the idea behind affirmative action(not necessarily the current system), just saying it is racist doesn’t change the fact that it helps people who are currently disadvantaged largely by America’s past society, and i approve of it as a corrective measure.

might as well say women’s bathrooms are sexist so they should be banned, you need more than just the word sexist to justify it.

also the podcast was hilarious.

BTW isolated cases like ones you mentioned are why we need this, so we can make this less isolated.

A more inclusive community is a good thing.

Now, if women were regularly placing well in the main tourney, having this sort of tourney would be sexist.

BTW Chess also has a women’s champion, and there are the same barriers to chess then there are to fighting games.

Since you obviously haven’t read the thread I’ll repeat myself for a third time. The women’s tournament is not taking resources away from ANY other game. If we removed the women’s tournament from the lineup entirely the rest of the lineup would be the same. There are many reasons for this, the most obvious one being that the women’s tournament is going to be quite small.

Great! Glad you’re on board with the women’s tournament then!

The fact that you do not see the parallels between a women trying to be accepted in the male-dominated FGC and a minority trying to be accepted in a white dominated business environment is probably the root of our differences of opinion. Hint: affirmative action does not have a solely economic justification.

Having the biggest side tournaments make it on stage is a great idea. There’s also already a good chance that it will happen. In case you forgot, or missed this post:

BlazBlue and Tekken were both side tournaments last year and they were both up the big screen during finals day.

Bad analogy sir, since a woman’s only SF4 tournament is more like separate drinking fountains for each race. Yes, I know they can enter the main tourney. Neither analogy is perfect but I’d argue mine is far closer than yours.

Affirmative action would be seeding women into second round play, or awarding an additional prize for the highest ranked woman in the actual tournament. Note that I’m not advocating those as solutions.

Here’s the million dollar question - what exactly is so special or different about women that necessitates their own tournament? It won’t improve their skill level since the talent is artificially limited. It won’t insulate them from the manchild sexist bullshit that comes with the scene - if anything it will make it worse, since you’ve now told women their participation is so strange as to be a spectacle itself.

You really want to increase female participation? Actively recruit and subsidize good female players to attend Evo. Make sure the event coverage this year features all the matches from female players, and make sure that the juvenille shit like the Devastation stream doesn’t happen. Tell the community that any sexist shit gets them ejected immediately, no questions asked.

What I’m saying is that there WILL be a vocal minority of people in the crowd at Evo who are a bunch of stupid assholes who are going to say some stupid shit that makes the rest of us look bad. Hell, the tourney had been announced all of 60 seconds before Ski made an inappropriate “stick” joke. Ski’s a good guy and I don’t hold it against him, but if the whole point of this exercise is broadening our community, the only thing this is going to achieve is making the FGC look like sexist pigs and we’re going to alienate a lot of our potential new audience, particularly if you plan on bringing back the stream.

Come one, come all, to gaming’s biggest sausage fest!

New in 2010, WOMEN!

Personally I’m just chuckling at the people reeling at the thought of MB actually getting into Evo.

Evo is the best :smoking:.

I like the womens event idea. My wife is coming with me already and now she has a event she can enter that she might have a shot of making top 16.

Seriously do u guys want less women at evo. Most fighting game events are a bit of a sausage fest. I think all tounements should have women only events. Come on the more eye candy the better.

So where and when will the “vote” be for the “other” game?

Probably in the next few days.

Besides ur so pretty people won’t even know. Ultimate David Esquire!

 @ this.
It’s funny because its true.

Too many people are getting all butthurt in this thread, my god. lol
"WOMEN GAMERS??? IN MY TOURNY??? WHAT THE HELL YOU MEAN, YOU PEOPLE!!??"

The womens tourny doesn’t matter until it actually happens because nobody in this thread knows what will happen with it.

Other stuff:
The 7th game getting voted in seems like a cool idea.Hopefully it works out.

You’re confusing your parallels with your perpendiculars. Your suggestion is more Brown. v. Board of Education than affirmative action.

Because the Ladies of Arcade Infinity can never get on that level. We have to baby them.

Gee, wonder why more women don’t want to participate

I like crackbone’s suggestions. The Devastation stream is a good example of this kind of bullshit too. I know first hand because I was the one on “stalker cam” most of the time and I was completely mortified (also, it happened to be my birthday so it pretty much ruined it). I went to Devastation to play games. I may not be good at Tekken but I love the game and I just wanted a shot to play in a tournament, plus I had a lot of friends who went. Instead I got treated like some fucking circus animal and my phone kept exploding with texts saying “YOU’RE ON CAM… AGAIN” from my friends at home… and it’s not like I could avoid it since the camera kept moving. I’m a shy person and I’m also not very photogenic so having the camera on me like that was humiliating. On top of that, my friends on IRC were telling me some of the things guys were saying, which I don’t even want to repeat.

With that being said, let me ask something. Do you guys really think throwing a shit-ton of attention like this on girls playing games is really going to help them, the FGC, or anyone? In my opinion, the only people who benefit from it are attention whores (fuck 'em, they should LEAVE the community), and anime-nerd virgins who get hard-ons from watching girls play games. Really, those are the only groups of people.

Supposedly the purpose of this female’s SSFIV gig is to promote female gamers and encourage more to play. This seems harmless but you have to understand it probably wont have that effect. Encouraging girls to play? That doesn’t make any sense. Are girls who don’t play games going to be at this event and think “hey, I don’t play fighting games, I’m here to watch my boyfriend… but I think I’ll give it a shot and enter a tournament for practice” Yeah okay. Anyone serious about games has to play hours a week. HOURS a week. A girl isn’t going to just be like “oh I’ll give it a shot” and enter a tournament on the spot. At least this doesn’t make sense to me. Also, getting their ass beat for the first time isn’t going to encourage them I think.

If a girl likes playing games and has fun, then her friends should help motivate her to get better if that’s her goal. If she doesn’t play games, don’t shove them in her face and be like “you should do this cuz I want to see it”. Come the fuck on. My boyfriend Rom has done everything humanly possible to help me get better and make me feel more positive about how stressful and difficult it is to become good at something as difficult as fighting games. If you want to know how to encourage girls to play, you should ask him. But if you’re goal is to make girls start playing, you should just let it be.

Also, I have to ask again, what is the point of this? Who is benefitting from this? You want more girls in the FGC but why? It seems like something YOU want. YOU want to just go to an event like Evo which is 99% guys and see more pretty faces. YOU want to be able to sit down next to your oppontent and have them flash a lip-gloss covered smile at you, not some killer-intent stare. So because of your wants, you’re altering the way people compete because you think it’ll help you achieve your goal. Honestly… you have a hobby that is dominated by men… face it. This could change (for instance there are more girls who play in Japan), but segregating the community isn’t going to get more girls to play, you have my word on that. My last point… how do girls feel about it? I stated how I feel… a lot of girls have already posted how they feel in this thread. I think most girls who are serious about the game (a.k.a. not attention whores) don’t give a fuck about playing with guys or not and a girls-only tourney is pointless.

wow… female ssf4 over melty blood… get real
