i don’t quite agree…
marvel was overall bigger iirc and more hype at EVO09 than SB4. all the great hotel room games, MMs, and the japanese players coming in. it was awesome. and then I went to SB4…and yeah, it wasn’t as good…but still pretty good.

Don’t get stubborn on this female special olympics thing. Recognize that virtually everyone who’s responded to it has been against it, and recognize that our reasons for being against it aren’t just the usual anger over our favorite game being snubbed but instead actual feelings of being offended regardless of sex/gender. I’m not calling you and the rest of the Evo staff sexist; I know this decision wasn’t made with that in mind. You’re trying to get more women to play, and that’s a good goal (although given previous women-only tournaments, there’s no reason to expect this to bring in anyone who wouldn’t have already been at Evo anyway). But intentions aside, understand that this tournament is sexist.
And by the way, if men want to enter this women only tournament, you’ll have a tough time finding something in the law that supports your attempts to stop them.

Seriously, get off the high horse for a minute, we all get that tourney players have the experience, etc, but to discount online players from the mix is unjustified, and frankly, ignorant. Online play is a major component for the community as a whole, alot of people cannot get to any tourneys due to thier location/work schedule. (I certainly cannot)
Just because a player is not part of a major arcade scene does not mean they cannot be tourny worthy, sure it hinders thier chances, but without online play, our community cannot grow, you should know this. (because you and I both know that arcades are NOT going to have a massive resurgance, sorry, not gonna happen)
Dont take the elitest/ignorant view, its time is over, GGPO,2DF, and HDR and BB and SF4, etc all have strong online support, and with this support we are gaining new members to our community, good players adding to the tourneys, adding to the pot as it were, without this our community would wither and eventually die. Embrace it for what it is, you dont have much choice.
I hold guys like you to a **HIGHER **standard, help your community, dont further insulate it away. You are better then that, I know you are, why?

I know this is a bad idea and all the games I wanted in got in, so I’m far from being one with an ulterior motive. Good intent, bad idea. I don’t see this going well for SEVERAL reasons already described by myself and others.
Normally I make page-long posts to explain my points but just hearing about that bullshit made me kind of speechless and I wanted to save everyone the trouble of scrolling down over my rant. BUT since I guess I didn’t get my thoughts across properly, allow me to ellaborate.
Yes, I read the thread. Yes, I know that Ladies SSIV isn’t DIRECTLY replacing any tournaments for major games (like MvC2, 3S, the list goes on); but the fact is it DOES require resources (consoles, monitors, space), draws attention from REAL tournaments, and time to run. Why not set-up space for something that’s not incredibly sexist, offensive, and time-wasting?
To be honest I’m more POed about the last part I mentioned, it being sexist. I don’t care too much for 3S or MvC2, one of them will most likely be elected as players’ choice anyway. I would have initially posted a long rant about it, but I’ve done it before, also many people have already done so. Especially UltraDavid… dude said pretty much everything I wanted to say and more on the issue.
Lastly… “it’s not that serious”. If you’re a girl, it is. I’m assuming you’re not, so don’t act like you understand how sexism (towards women) feels.

UltraDavid if the FGC was doing anything at all to correct the existing chauvanistic environment, or if any of the ladies tournament detractors offered better suggestions on how to support the growing number of women that might want to play competitively, then I would be more sensitive to the criticism. The fact is today that the FGC does many tiny things that add up to discourage women from playing, and it doesn’t do anything to tilt the balance to a more gender neutral playing field.
Without completely digressing to a political discussion, you say this tournament is sexist. Do you believe that affirmative action is racist?
one more reason i would like to mention regarding the “all female bs tourney” is that at EVO west which was held in san diego a couple years back there was a FEMALE who whooped the shit out of a TOP USA PLAYER bronson tran in tekken. usmc ogre’s wife, yes WIFE, fucked up bronson tran who was one of the favorites to win the tourney and placed top 3 at EVO that same year. so why do females need their own tourney again??.. iono, im just sayin…

One thing I will note is that during last night’s podcast itself there were somewhat sexist/rude comments made regarding this event “the winner will get ski’s secret stick”, “finally a reason to have the cameras on the players”, etc. They were jokes, sure, but does it matter? That’s to say nothing of what was said in irc. If the official srk podcast can’t even keep from treating them as sex objects or a sideshow do you really think the masses of players will? I’m not the political correctness police, and it is possible to take things too seriously, but I don’t think it sets a good tone for the event right from its announcement.
Comedy is an equal opportunity offender. If you find yourself getting upset over sexist/racist jokes often, you are probably professionally unhappy, and I urge you to go be unhappy listening to something else.

No MVC2
No CVS2
you are ignoring a large base of the FGC mostly the OG players who are the base of SRK and the original Evo Players. 3s/MVC2/CVS2 should always be at evo just like HD(ST) remix because that is what created evo.
SSF4 Womens only tournament is not a bad idea until you neglect the games I mentioned above.

I actually agree with Chris Rock’s stance on affirmative action. I don’t think I should get a job over a more qualified white guy simply because I’m asian. But if it’s a tie, fuck him.
keits - LOL I certainly wasn’t offended by the jokes. All I’m saying is that if this tournament is an attempt to get more women into the scene, maybe those types of jokes aren’t particularly helpful. I’ll put it this way - you would never hear jokes like that during an announcement or commentary on any professional women’s sporting event. In fact, any time any kind of racist/sexist comment is made by a member of the media, they’re usually fired on the spot. Obviously this isn’t a real business thing here, just sayin’.
