I’m wondering the same thing. Also will we be restricted by a set list of games we’re allowed to vote for? If Melty isn’t even on the list of possibles I’m gonna be super pissed!
This is insane. I know the female tournament is a bonus tournament, but this is making EVO look bad. EVO will lose it’s prestige with a corny stunt like this. I can’t believe after the amazing online sales (sold more than HDR) and the PS3 station last year that taking Marvel out was actually considered…They should AT LEAST test to see how many more people will enter Marvel since it’s release. There is no other game like Marvel out there! I personally don’t mind it being PS3. The only difference I see between PS3 and DC is Magneto’s double LK. Other than that, I can see it being pretty playable although I’d still prefer Dreamcast by a mile. Marvel should be carved in stone as an EVO event. This is one of the hardest, entertaining, dynamic, dramatic games ever made.
Most seasoned Marvel players from what I understand have an issue with the PS3/360 ports…so there.
I side with Watson and UltraDavid on the Femme tourney issue. Not that it would really impact me of course.
Best post yet
Kind of a difficult to pick games. A lot of the old games have unpredictable turn outs and results because a lot of people aren’t practicing them anymore. Then a lot of the new games other than SF4 and T6 have split communities.
Personally I think TvC should be on the vote list with everything else. I imagine the amount of competitors will rise compared to tournaments last year but I doubt by much.
Theres the whole HDR/ST debate. I think ST is the better choice simply to encourage japanese players to come. The amount encouraged would be very very low but even just one good japanese player in a tournament makes it much more exciting.
Lastly I understand the intents of the female tournament but they have never been effective in the past. By this I mean female tourneys in Counter-strike and other pc games. The only thing they’ve done for the pc community is create a small amount of female teams that rely on all female tourneys. Which as a result just increased the hostility of male gamers towards females as the tournaments take away potential prize money from the regular tournaments of those games.
The FG community doesn’t really have to deal with the prize money situation since entry fees usually make up prize pots but I really don’t see any positive outcome to such an event. Most females that are actually interested in the game and not in attention will already enter main tourneys.
Sorry to bring more ranting about the subject :P.
Also I hope mashy blood wins the vote. It is mashtastic but at least brings the hype.
i would totally love to see the finals of a CvS2 tourney up on the big screen… CvS2 is so fun to watch at pro level… imma have to dust off my s-groove skills and actually compete in it this year too cuz i totally sidestepped it at 2k9… and the femme fatale tourney is a good idea in my book… i figure it’s time to know who the most skilled/dedicated female street fighter player is … anyone who finds this stupid, pointless, or offensive is looking at it the wrong way…
3S is more well-deserved than MvC2. I don’t care what anybody says and I don’t care that MvC2 was the first game I got competitive in. As much as I personally hate 3S, MvC2 over the last years is just Americas’ way to say, “FUCK YOU JAPAN” because they don’t place. 3S has more competition than MvC2, especially on a global scale. In the US, the same players that played MvC2 for the last 10 years are the same that will play this year. Nobody new. What, XBL / PSN brings new players? My ass, nobody can get up to the top player level from online play in a year. So what does that mean? It means you can watch the 2k8 and 2k9 DVDs and get the same shit from it as having a new tournament.
My opinion.
The female tourney is a great idea. The haters on this need to get over themselves and not be dumbasses.
And for all you Japan-nuthuggers: the Japanese do this also.
Agree with HDR, SSF4, and Tekken being on there- the other games aren’t major games in the US.
I’d have liked to have seen Evo go experimental a bit more, and have Melty instead of BB.
The Last game I’m betting will be Marvel or SC4 (SC4 did sell well)
Some clarifications:
As has been said several times before, the women’s tournament is not taking away a slot from another game. If you’re still pro-woman gamer and anti-woman gamer tournament, think about this. Is this event more or less likely to attract more women to SF4? And please rememeber, no one is barred from competing in the main tournament.
Why HDR over MvC2? HDR had more attendees last year. If Marvel had more it would be on the lineup instead. If the Marvel community is still so strong is should win the vote off in a landslide.
The idea of hosting “offical” BYOC tournaments has been tried before. It is not feasible from a scheduling stand point. We try as hard as possible to not have players playing in multiple tournament simultaneously because it slows down all the tournaments. This plus the fact that BYOC tournaments have a hit or miss record for completing in a timely manner means this is a recipe for disaster. Now, what we might do is hold some kind of exhibition event for the finals or semifinals of tournaments that are NOT official Evo tournaments. You know, exactly like we did in 2009. We haven’t announced exhibitions yet.
I appreciate that people can have a difference of opinion, but do not appreciate the snide remarks that Evo staff is sexist, stupid, incapable of reason, or sold out. Yes, Evo is by players for players but if we blindly followed everything the players said Evo 2010 would be held at Gameworks and would have about 64 players.
Marvel, great, CVS2, great, whatever these games have all had their time.
Time to put MB in the limelight!
Any game that doesn’t make it as a main tourney should have some sort of exhibition match though IMO.
mr.wizard has said that if the game happens to come out before evo, or aksys games hooks up stations for bbcs we could get that poppin, everyone in socal call up aksys games and get it going
mbaa for evo2k10
Very convincing argument.
On that one day, or in general? If the former, it’s debatable. If the latter, the women’s tournament is pretty unlikely to develop actual competitive females, as demonstrated by history, and stands a decent chance of turning women away from the scene. No, technically no female is banned from the main tournament. But what’s the incentive to play in the main tournament and lose if she has a chance to beat up on scrubby broads and claim EVO CHAMPION?
I’m just not seeing any way this produces any positive lasting effect.
If 3S/MvC2 (whichever of the two doesn’t get in) has a side tournament, could the t8 still be recorded and uploaded with IGN (assuming you’re still using them)? I always love watching those two, and would be pretty damn disappointed if they didn’t get to be recorded. Same thing with CvS2, actually. Pity there’s no way for all three to be in.
The first thing I did was just make a post laughing my ass off when I was listening to the stream cuz I knew the hilarity that was going to ensue when people would find out that there was going to be TWO Super tournaments. The “best” part being one of them is only open to women.
Now for a more serious tone…this doesn’t surprise me. There are probably more women interested in playing SF competitively at Evo than ever, though like Ultra David I’ve never respected the idea of putting them into a seperate tournament. Video games are probably the most gender friendly sport available. Men don’t think faster or harder than women do. As a matter of fact it’s statistically proven that women have a better sense of memory than men do and concentrating on multiple things at once is key to success in fighting games especially. The only difference is that as men…men have a more competitive driven nature. We like to do things more for the sake of the competition and therefore our drive to get better at the game is stronger than a girl who may just want to play enough to have a good time and say they won something amongst each other. Rather than compete with people who devote a good portion of their life to SF and will inherently have a huge experience advantage over them.
Though isn’t that why they made SFIV in the first place? To make it more accessible to newer players? At least 2 or 3 of the people in top 8 last year were people I’ve never even heard of the in the fighting game scene like period. Sure they were guys and probably have been playing fighting games seriously for years and just have never known but if there’s anytime to get serious and get better at SF it’s now. Creating a gender segregation between men and women in tournaments creates in unnecessary divide that makes SF and fighting games appear like they are something that men because of their nature are capable of competing at a higher level than women. There is nothing physical or probably even mental about men that makes them stronger in video games other than their natural competitive drive. Which a woman can easily achieve a competitive drive as seen in sports today. Outside of that all of men’s other strengths I would assume are within their physical nature and a man’s fingers are not going to move so much more faster than a woman’s that it’s going to make any real difference in a tournament.
This reminds me of the Championship Gaming Series where their fighting game event was always Dead or Alive 4. It was obviously a league based event so there were multiple teams of like 20 men and 1 woman. Of those 20 men and 1 woman of each team one man and one woman only were drafted to play Dead or Alive 4. Everyone else on the team teamed up or played solo in multiple other games to earn points for the team. So they only needed to do one tournament for each game EXCEPT for Dead or Alive 4 where the DOA man would compete against the other team’s DOA man. Then the DOA woman would compete with the DOA woman of the other team in a seperate ladies event. For me it was totally unnecessary to do since the learning curve of that game isn’t huge compared to other fighting games and just watching the women compete on screen u could tell there wasn’t much of a competitive difference between their best women and the best men.
I do respect Evo for allowing the women to freely compete in the men’s tournament. ** That shows at least that they understand that women are just as capable of competing as men are. The only issue between men and women is the obvious skill gap where a lot of the people going to Evo are people who have been playing SF in local and major tournaments for years. Whereas very few of the women that are going to be competing in the women’s tournament have competed in any SF tournaments period local or major. It’s obvious that only like one or 2 of the women would make it past more than 3rd round of a pool bracket though that’s mainly because there’s so little time for them to train themselves up to as competitive of a level as people who have been doing this for such a long time. Especially now that there’s ANOTHER version of the game coming out even the veterans are going to have to adjust their game 3 months before July. I do think SFIV is probably the most newbie friendly SF game ever though and I believe by next year there’d be almost no reason to hold a ladies only tournament other than to unnecessarily put the spotlight on women in the tournament. I’d prefer the women to put themselves out their through their skillset than the fact that they are simply women. They might as well just be cheerleaders if they need to continuously have their own world tournament year after year.**
I beg to disagree.
Honestly, I only see one of two things coming out of the Women’s Only tournament. Either the 10-15 women in the community that actually get into the game competitively will sign up (provided they don’t feel insulted by the concept, which a couple have already expressed as much), which will make it a tiny tournament, or the brackets will be filled with those same 10-15 plus the player’s girlfriends and attention whores that are signing up for the lulz at best, which will mean that most of the bracket will be fodder until we get down to those 10-15 serious female players anyway. Simply fattening the pot but pretty much the same as the first possibility.
There aren’t a lot of women playing games competitively, not because of lack of ability, oh hell no. It’s sheer lack of interest. As described above, there’s a natural competitive streak in men that just doesn’t exist in women nearly as much. There are a number that do, yes, but I’m pretty sure a lot of 'em are gonna feel at best insulted that they need to have their own category to have a shot at winning a tournament, even if they aren’t being denied the main attraction. I can see the good intentions Evo’s got for this idea, but it just comes off as a bit condescending. I just don’t see many signing up for the women’s only out of principle.
Can’t believe SSF4 will have a female only tournament.
I remember back in the day, tekken had good females joining the regular, california major tournaments called “Electric Cancel”. A top korean female Mishima player even came over and beat some people down. You had “tekken chick” and a bunch of others that I can’t recall who good and could hang with the boys.
Hm, even at like Evo West or something you had Weird Gonzo (female tekken player) who had the best Ling in California back in the Tekken 4 days. Most recently, you have Super Yan representing in Tekken 6.
Now even Evo is catering to the Ladies of Arcade Infinity. With that said, I got my money on Mizuki, StarSlay3r or Sherry Jenix.
Then you’re a fucking dipshit that’s never played the US MvC2 competition.
Xbox Live and PSN definitely does bring in newer players. Not necessarily always straight to Evo but without online play there’d be a lot less people playing SF competitively period today. Not everyone has the money or amount of other competitive SF players around them to compete in local tournaments and run to majors all the time. It is undeniable that a lot more people really understand the true infinite replay value of SF now that they are able to compete with each other in some form of the game whenever they feel like it just by turning on the Xbox or PS3.
In 1999 if people wanted to play Tekken 3, Alpha 3 or Soul Calibur they had to play the single player modes, hopefully have a brother or a friend who cared as much about the game as they did or hopefully have some arcade near them that was probably in the process of closing down and had broken arcade parts. 10 years later I can now run into other top players that live near me just by getting on GGPO or signing onto Xbox Live. Of course none of those create the true head to head experience that an offline tournament or arcade does but it’s better than nothing.
Yeah in Japan it’s pretty normal for women to be competitive players. Like ones you have to give as much respect to as a top male player. I think I pretty much understand the jist behind the females only tournament though and that’s mainly that their SF skillset is just not as developed as the majority of the males that play SFIV so it’s best to have them have a seperate tournament amongst each other. That way they can have a focus on their specific competitiveness at SFIV.
Yeah I’d really like to know how much better Starlayer’s Sagat has gotten since last Evo. I remember joking about her using Sagat in SFIV to get free wins and now I’m using Sagat too. I’ve started to learn more about playing SF competitively over the last year and I’m pretty much done with being the guy trying to always make it through with characters that have inherent limitations. Nothing wrong with just picking the shit that works. Now that Viper is touted by Seth to be a near top tier for Super I should probably stick with Viper. Though if Gief and Honda are still fucked up for her I’m bringing out Sagay.
BTW I never though about it but I just realized that SherryJenix is the sister of another male SFIV player. I remember Kryojenix playing Viper back in the early days of SFIV and apparently she uses Viper as well. Guess it’s in the family. Haven’t seen or heard from Kryo lately though.
