Look at that pool- technically Sanford had it good since he didn’t have to play much in the way of EC, right? He got mostly WC peeps, and EC >>>>>>>>>>>> WC and Sanford is the best Marvel player not named Justin ever right? Give me a break.
Sanford is hella good but if he was “3x better” than everybody else in his pool then why didn’t he make it out of his pool? And you don’t see people whining “omg phat_toi and Mike Ross should have qualified except they had to play Duc and Row omg” do you? And how would you react if Sanford did qualify and people were like “what retard put that pool together I mean Duc and Row are obviously #x better than so many people but they both couldn’t qualify because Sanford was in their pool wah wah pms?”

Um pools are the last chance to get into top 32 for all the people who DIDN’T ALREADY QUALIFY. They aren’t meant to be easy entry to top 16 for whoever the local polls say should win Evo. They’re meant for the people who are playing well enough and who want it enough to make that push and beat the rest.
Pools ARE meant to be a crapshoot to some extent. You can only have 8 people in the top 8, and if you aren’t going to qualify and skip pools altogether then you’re taking your chances with whatever pool you get. Pools aren’t a cakewalk, they’re do or die.
What objective scoring system? APEX doesn’t exist anymore. There isn’t a single Marvel tournament that Sanford has entered in the last year where he hasn’t placed top 2. It’s not like everyone is just jumping on this guy as the next big thing. Sanford Kelly has proven time and time again that he is an absolute monster of a player. If you place consistently in the top 2 of every tourney you enter against a brutally tough region like NYC, how can anyone say that he doesn’t deserve a proper seeding in the qualifying pools?
I don’t know why people can’t admit that that pool was a complete crapshoot. You had the World Champion, a double runner up and the 2nd best player in the entire east coast (results don’t lie) in the same pool. It doesn’t take a genius to see that the pool isn’t right. It’s just like that insane AE bracket at EVO East. What in the blue hell were they thinking when that one was constructed?
Sanford got the shaft and thrown in there with Duc after talking smack a few days back. Any other organizers in any other region would have seeded him in a different pool than the World Champion. Just because these organizers run the World Championships, doesn’t mean they’re above fucking over someone. The only difference here is that they’re too high and mighty to be up front about it.
I never disputed that the pools are meant as a last chance to get into top 32. However, the format doesn’t mean that you lump the best with the best and roll the dice. The players that entered EVO East and EVO West were REWARDED for qualifying. Your perspective is saying that everyone that can’t make it should be PUNISHED for not attending. That simply put is flat out stupidity. People have jobs. People have bills that come before burning discretionary funds on video games. They have family gatherings, girlfriends to answer to, etc… Would Justin Wong deserve the same pool if he didn’t qualify at EVO East? HELL NO! And you can damn well bet that no WC organizer would have put him in that pool because their boy would have been in early danger of being smoked by the four time World Champ.
Last chance to qualify or not, you seed the players properly and you avoid “black pools” or whatever term is thrown around for these giant mistakes that everyone has to suck up.

As long as the pools were random, the shit is fair. Would you say the same thing if Sanford won all his pools? And how come you aren’t defending any of the other players in the same bracket? How is it bad that Sanford has to fight a reigning champ and runners up, but how is it not bad that Duc, Row, and Mike Ross have to fight the only person who beat Justin Wong in a grand finals match and who is also an ECC champ? You make it sound like Sanford doesn’t have a prayer at beating any of these guys.
Yeah I get it, instead of putting Duc, Sanford, Row, phat_toi, Mike Ross, and Carnevil in the same pool, let’s put Duc, X, Wigfall, ruin, and some other big names into a pool- NOBODY will whine about that!!!
Face it- there were just TOO MANY good players to keep them all apart. Pools are a crapshoot no matter what. Everybody is going to whine that some pool is the “black pool of death” just because it contains a bunch of good players including their favorite player at the moment, because heaven forbid their player has a challenge to their divine right to the top 16.
But I’m sure it means so much to place one tier higher because you beat some random scrub in your pool and still lost to the same guys who beat some guy who placed one tier lower than you because he had one less scrub to play.
You make it sound like Sanford was the one getting screwed anyhow. If anything, given all the hype around Sanford, shouldn’t Row be the one who was “shafted” by his pool? I mean come on, the double runner up against the world champ and the #2 EC player (results don’t lie!!!) I mean how is that even fair? I mean nobody has even seen Seattle play in months and Sanford has been tearing it up on the EC and Duc is the TWO TIME WORLD CHAMP, but everybody knows Row is good right? Get over it guys, there are too many big players. Everyone who didn’t make it out of pools had their chance to qualify. If they didn’t make it, they didn’t deserve it, flat out. Whether they lose in pools, or lose in the tourney, they didn’t have what it took.

Also…I have to agree Sanford, Row, and Duc all in the same bracket is pretty weak but he shoulda beat those guys as people have said if he was down to win the tournament. With that being said…they could have put one of those 3 guys in any other pool and no one would have complained really. Unless there was a bracket with Justin, Yipes, Row all in the same pool or something. 2nd best on EC, last years winner, and the guy who was the only hope to beat Wong for a long time all in the same bracket is retarded.
