Evil Ryu General Discussion: Same Ryu, but now he's pissed!

the height requirement for his dive kick is lower than gouki
tatsumaki doesn’t have armor break property
teleport’s distance is shorter than gouki’s
dragon stomp has armor break
continue from hop kick with crouching lp or close standing mp
if they blocked hop kick, you’re at a disadvantage of 2 frames
furthest distance kara-throw is hp > lp+lk
uppercut mk > hp for shoryuken that goes further horizontally (because crouching mk moves you abit)

Hold up, does this mean Evil Ryu can do kara DP? And that’s good to know about his dive kick and hop kick. Not the best “get in” moves, but at least they can be useful.

played maybe 15 or so games as evil ryu vs. randoms and vs the CPU

s.hp seems to force stand, you can do crossup, c.lp, s.hpxxstomp c.mp, lk tastu, DP for goofy damage. or something like c.lp, s.hpxxstomp, c.mpxxEX hurricane into ultra in the corner. c.lp into s.hp seems to be a pretty tight link - possibly 1 frame?

the link off of stomp to c.mp doesn’t seem that hard, my first time playing him and I was hitting it maybe 80% of the time - you can also link low jab or a DP

has a target combo - seems useless, s.mp, far standing hp - cannot cancel into any specials - not sure if safe on block.

c.mk fireball always combos it seems - if you’re a sharp person you can confirm off that with an FADC combo

can combo U1 in all scenerios where ryu can, I didn’t really mess with U2 but I imagine U1 will be more useful is most matchups.

Glad to hear about f. MK and lower divekick. Both are probably going to be pretty strong. Finally starting to have some properties where I can see gouki level health being ok.

I don’t feel the same way. I just don’t see the reason to give him that low of health and stun. His tool set is not as good as Seth or Akuma, nor is his runaway game. His teleport is also not that great either at escaping on wake up, you can get blown up if your opponent starts looking for it. With his current set of moves and normals, I don’t think his health and stun being so low is justified. If he were at least 900 health and 950 stun then that would be just about right IMO.

Hell I wish they just went all out and gave us boss Evil Ryu instead. Let him cancel out of teleport with anything and cancel his DP into Demon like in that video. Give him 700 health(or lower if necessary) and we can call it a day.

He has:

  • strong fireball zoning game,
  • plus ridiculous close up damage with very little or no meter,
  • he can apply non fireball pressure from air and the ground,
  • cr. mk XX fb is a true combo not to mention the pressure you can apply with it,
  • has 2 overheads, fast dash,
  • long focus range,
  • strong footsie game,
  • teleport,
  • ultra 1 and 2 can be comboed easy(seems easy anyways),
  • antiair game is strong,
  • runaway game is strong.

Justified?? hell yeah!!! This character sounds bullshit on paper. Might be a diff story in practice. But from my POV completely BS character. Hopefully his execution is hard.

Wow, seems as if his low health would be a small price to pay with all that tools he and his execution is similar to most shotos as his normals almost is identical to Regular Ryu. But then again, ppl who have bested him might tell you otherwise.

evil ryu feels mid tier at best - low health and a weaker ground game than the other shotos evens out with his high damage.

if you do not mind me asking, how does he have a weaker ground game? is that the feeling you got when you played him?

c.mk is slower than ryu’s/akuma’s and so is his sweep, his walk speed is slow like ryu’s - he doesn’t have a lot of health to play around with so eating heavy pokes hurts really bad too.

he’s not bad but not great, his strength will be his ability to kill characters in 3-4 combos, he’ll be able to turtle/zone out characters like honda or zangief though.

Zoning just isnt that strong in this game in general and E.ryu is no exception. I predict he will be high mid at best. Still looks fun though

His walk speed isn’t really “slow”. Slower than akuma sure, but still faster than normal ryu. He has what looks like the best forward dash in the game anyway, or close to it.

Also, looks like the first shoto with a decent back dash, unless you want to count dan.

I have not played Evil Ryu of course but Albo and Carltwo mentioned a lot of things that I agree with and mentioned about Evil Ryu from watching all the different videos of him. Here is my own breakdown of how I see Evil Ryu

-Normals: Average. Lights can be chained, MP is pretty good, but still doesn’t have the same kind of reach as the Shoto cr. MK. Evil Ryu also lacks Ryu’s assortment of links. Including combo’ing into sweep like most Shoto’s can.

-Damage: Great. Yes Evil Ryu can hit like a truck. Problem is that he doesn’t have a good way to get that combo started. We’ll see that combo from time to time(mainly off punishes), but it won’t be too often during high level play.

-Zoning: Good. He might have the best fireball game in the game. His start up and recovery looks to be on par or better then Ryu. His anti airs are as good as regular Ryu. Problem is that projectile characters aren’t so good in AE.

-Focus Attack: Great. It has long reach and looks cool, nuff said.

-Ultras: Great. He may have the best combo in the game. Both do pretty damage on FADC, even partial Ultra 2 hurts quite a bit. And after focus crumple, both are pretty good since a point blank Metsu Hado does more damage.

-Mix ups: Average. A nice improvement from Ryu, but far from Akuma’s vortex. Dive kick, resets after tatsu, and having the EX axe kick all contribute to a decent mix up game.

Overall: Good. If this were Super, he could be top 5 but since we’re talking about AE I think he’ll be upper mid as Cartwo also said. He’s good, but not broken. Even if he were 1000 health/stun, he might barely be top 5, but still definitely not apart of the argument for best character in the game(IMO).

Of course I’m just playing theory fighter right now. But even top players have said the same thing. When Yun and Yang became available, everybody just knew they were going to be really good after some time with them. The same can’t be said for Evil Ryu and Oni. And I think that’s too bad. They have a cool look, but don’t strike fear like the twins do. Like I said, I wish these two would have been overpowered and extremely low health instead of what we have now.

Honestly the one thing he’s missing other shoto’s have is links into sweep. If he had that I could see some upper tier material.Right now how good he is all depends on how close you end up after f+MK on hit. Combo’s off that is sick … and only -2? Did that guy lie or people just not used to using it yet?

His most powerful characteristic to me is a true block string 100% comboability of cr. MK fireball.

Question: What does U1 combo from U2 doesn’t? SRK FADC? I mean if they all combo from the same setups j. MP, EX Tatsu, and SRK FADC but U2 deals more damage why against jump happy twins would you pick U1 over the 2/3rds life anti-air? or is it not as reliable as it looks?
