I’m gonna laugh when people drop evil ryu for normal ryu because hes isn’t a replacement or honestly that even that similar to normal ryu. I’m pretty sure if you try to play evil ryu like normal ryu you will never actually be good with him.
Well being that he is similar to Ryu I think that you will just have to adjust some plus E.Ryu’s tools like dive kick and red fireball only add to his game … no one smart is gonna play E.Ryu EXACTLY like Ryu because then what would be the point of playing E.Ryu if you are just gonna play the same when E.Ryu has lower health (if i am not mistaken).
how similar to normal ryu do people think he actually is?
The only things ryu can do that evil ryu can’t is
comboing into sweep with normals
comboing into super
tatsu over fireballs
solar plexus strike
combo hinto his c.mk/c.fp without counterhit
everything else eryu can do, and alot of the time even better. However if you are gonna play him just like normal ryu, you are gimping yourself because of his low health.
I don’t think anyone plans to play him JUST like Ryu. But from what I’ve seen so far, it doesn’t seem like an unreasonable strategy to play him like a Ryu clone during the zoning game, then switching to Akuma mode when hitting up the defense/rushdown.
Well, the main reason a former Ryu main would play E.Ryu is because according to many top players (Valle and Air, to be specific), AE Ryu’s footsies have been destroyed mainly due to his crouching forward nerf. Air has said he’s switching to Evil Ryu, I dunno about Valle. Though I agree Air will (obviously) have to adjust his play style significantly, as Evil Ryu does seem much more distinct from O. Ryu (and even Akuma) than people seem to be giving him credit for.
I can’t see Valle switching off of Ryu. But then again, I can’t see Daigo completely giving Ryu das boot, like many seem to suggest. Just wait for Daigo to run into someone like Vangief during this tournament season. We’ll see Ryu come back. >_>
I could easily see Valle switching in AE. At the last Wednesday Night Fights, UltraDavid (or some other commentator, I’m not sure) mentioned that Valle is set in the belief that Ryu is utterly useless in AE. So I’d assume he’s at least entertaining the idea of switching. And he already plays a few characters on the side (and quite well, I might add). So I’m thinking it’s very likely that we’ll see him switch in AE.
Capcom’s thought process baffles me as well. Looking at Evil Ryu’s tools vs Yuns tools, and then Yun gets more health and stun…hmm.
I guess I gotta file that under a “won’t believe it until I see it” sort of thing. On the UFGT7 stream, I do recall Valle really stressing people to watch WNF the week of Revelations (this next week). Maybe him blowing up people with Evil Ryu is what he was getting at. Either way, I’m for some Evil Ryu love. Unless he becomes the new Ryu, then maybe I’ll just use Ryu…
Word. Evil Ryu should have 1000 health, 950 *at the very least. *The only thing that’d make me consider 850 as “fair” in the context of this game is if all versions of Dragon Stomp were overheads.
I’ve been the biggest critic of this decision on the SRK forums. You could say I whine about it every chance I get.
If it were an overhead and it was safe on block then I could be down with Evil Ryu being 850 health, but unfortunately that’s not the case. It’s like Capcom sat around thinking “how do we make Yun more broken?”. Then when that ended, the next plan was “how do we make Evil Ryu more shitty?”. It’s like the only compensation we get for his low health and average tools are how cool he looks with the aura flowing from his body.
Hey now, don’t forget U2 is the sexiest Ultra in the game visually.
Well, I’m going to main Evil Ryu in AE no matter what. I don’t think he’ll be any higher than upper mid tier at best, but I don’t really care. His tools are solid enough that it’ll be possible to win most matchups on fundamentals alone. And it’s not like I’m not used to playing characters who are simply lacking what they need to win some matchups consistently points to avatar.
That IS one thing, if nothing else E Ryu will still have shoto fundamentals to fall back on.
Yeah you’re right, Evil Ryu being low tier is justified lol. That’s probably going to be my Ultra of choice. Punishing with that will do a lot more damage and even the partial damage is only a little behind Metsu Hado’s full damage.
what’s the point of doing LK DS in combos though when you can combo tatsu + shoryu off a MK DS, which probably does more stun (and damage) anyways?
I think we all seem to neglected Evil Ryu’s command attack tool, the f.mk (hopkick). I would say some would pick Evil Ryu more than Ryu cos of the f.mk reset pressure. That move from juggles opens a wide range of guessing game such as dash crossover, overhead mixup, throw mixup, hopkick low crush attack, j.mk crossover, anti shoryuken j.mk to reset pressure and etc.
It’s easier to combo it LK DS. And if you stun them on the SRK after a MK DS combo, they are gonna be scaled like no tomorrow. Better to cut it short if you know they are close.
I don’t know if it’s been said yet but off of a trade DP, is it possible to follow up with a f.mk for juggle?
