They used 3D models to assist with the sprite work.
You could use a render light sources onto the 3D model, and then probably outline the areas that reflect light on the sprites themselves.
more like add/multiply blending
Actually, wasn’t the way they did it as posted in that interview a while ago taking the rendered 3D model and using it as a cel rather than as a sprite, drawing the 2D version right over it?
If so then I don’t think they could do it that way. It does sound to me more like screen/multiply filtering.
PS2 port? no thanks, Arcana Heart was mostly downsampled so i dont want to see the result of KOFXII on PS2… just move to PS3 or 360.
Odin Sphere used real-time lighting. And as others said some other games have too.
That was just Kotaku covering up their ass by claiming the game used 3D models at one point.
Essentially it was like this:
Crappy Youtube Trailer Showed - Kotaku said: “See the game uses 3D models, we were right!”
Higher Quality Videos Come and SNK confirms that they are sprites - Kotaku makes up BS - “They animated with 3D first then used 2D”
Sorry for the indepth post but this has been said too much amongst this realm.
By my knowledge no other site has stated this.
I mean when you really think about it, it doesn’t make sense to do that as there are far more viable ways to do hand-drawn animation.
GEE ASH LOOKING MUCH MORE HOMO THAN USUAL
good lord no even the sprites were drawn by falcoon (well, in his style anyways)
lol kotaku
Ash Is A Guy??
uh… the sprites are styled after nona’s artwork…
If you ever played any kof post-2k2, you would have heard him speak. I smell a Capcom fan-troll…
Can we PLEASE stop talking about hd ssft? It already has it’s own thread.
Whats with all the fuckin pigs in the BGs
Danm, i never saw that one coming…

Thanks for the info!

look at it exactly at the 27 second mark. look at ash moving his arm up. if this is too cloudy, check out the high res trailer at the exact same moment as in the youtube link when it reaches the 27 second mark.
its just at the start when they start showing the new graphics. i know im a picky bastard, but look at how terribly ash’s arm is animated (3 or 4 frames!). there was no animation that bad in MOTW, a 10 year old game. lets not even get started about sf3. i just hope the shit gets animated better. sadly, things like this do matter to me, especially after snkp made the announcements that this would be the ultimate 2d fighter ever, then they shouldnt just be worrying about the sprites, but also the animation and music too (gameplay is a given, no need to mentio it) IMO. just my 2 cents. we all know how cheap them koreans are, let them help too. this way it could easily be better animated then sf3, easily. that is, if they want it to be.
to me it looks like the animation in parts of the trailer is slowed down…
ugh, yeah man. that shit is slowed down for dramatic effect. That is why it looks strobe-like. guaranteed. OR at the least something wacky is going on because the background characters arent animated in that scene either.
No really I’m not kidding. I got KOFXI for like $20 and I play it a little bit once in a while. I guess I haven’t gotten that much info on all the characters.
It’s a popular trend and very japanese to have very feminine characters who practically look like women but are men.
Ash is one of them. When I saw the first pics of Duo Lon I wasn’t sure if it was a man or a flat chested woman either, but the voice kinda gives it away.
There’s definetly a slow-down there.
Exactly.
Well it didn’t look THAT bad from the youtube version, but then again that’s bad quality (GT won’t load for me for some reason). Anyway it could be easily improve all they would have to do is add more frames and as simple as the animation looks they would only have to animate his arm and shoulder. They have a couple of months to touch up things and I’m sure they will (I.E. Street Fighter IV I know this is 2D and harder but they have to do less touchups).
Then again some people are just saying it’s slow down.
