Eurogamer: Daisuke Ishiwatari thinks 3rd Strike is the best 2d fighter ever made

Man, you should. GG is an amazing game. It’s one of the few games where you get the vibe that the creators made it more out of love than out of obligation.

It’s the reason folks who don’t know anything about 3s quote for disliking the game because they haven’t spent any time on it. Anything’s random if you don’t bother taking the time to learn anything about it. Besides, there are guessing games in EVERY fighter.

obviously he has to simplify his answer for a common interview. it’s not like the man lacks a background in fighting games and didn’t notice anything else except that there’s guessing/nervousness or w/e.

edit: btw i appreciate your gg uploads on youtube back when i was learning it. nvm if i’m thinking of someone else.

More importantly

Eurogamer: What ever happened to Guilty Gear? Why did you stop making it?

Daisuke Ishiwatari: Guilty Gear got too hardcore for some people, so we wanted to reset the level of entrance. BlazBlue was the answer to it. Also, the generation of Guilty Gear players has become a certain age ? maybe a little bit too old for playing games. So making that reset brings in a new generation of fighting game players. Then they will be with us for the next few years.

What?! Look at Capcom’s franchises, they are older, they got easier to get into, and they are successful.

real recognize real

Yes, a lot of people dislike thinking.

Call it crazy, but some people are more concerned with quality than success.

Yes, but moreso they hate the concept of “one guess = big damage”, and it’s a lot more visible on 3S because of parries. They also like to associate “3S guessing” with “getting rewarded for being random”.

There are guessing games in every fighting single fighting game ever made. Parries can’t take all of the blame, because a lot of the characters in 3S were made for close-range mixups. That’s not to say fireballs are worthless in 3S, because they can still be used for mid-range zoning and spacing. You just have to use them differently from past SF games.

I would also like to point out, for those that want to bitch about how parries turned 3S into a bunch of random nonsense, there is also the red parry.

OFN.

Thread got dumped in here I guess and suddenly all the posters turned into regulars. I don’t see why it was put here. It’s a fighting game discussion, not 3S.

Also no you can’t apply the same level of nervousness to every fighting game. I think what he meant was in 3S because of the ability to go from defense to offense so rapidly, you never quite know if they’re going to pull something out of their ass and destroy you. blahblahblah.

srk bosses hate 3s. any thing 3s related is auto punted to 3s forums to be lost from the mainstream discussion.

conspiracy to kill 3s has been around for years.

Surprise surprise, the thread ends up here.

Anyway, I don’t know why people are getting so Steve Ballmer over one little quote: he may have actually given a more detailed reason as to why he liked 3S so much, but the interviewers/whoever stripped it down to that.
