Are there any players in Eugene, Oregon scene? I will be moving there in a few days, and may have some free time. 2 joysticks? Arcade?
about 3 of us…
I know a couple friends over there there hold weekly get togethers. Don’t know what level they’re at though.
I’m in Eugene. It’s nice to see that there are other players in this area here!
There doesn’t seem to be a lot of Street Fighter players in this area since the Wunderland Arcades shut down. Tilt is about the only place that has any arcade games (unless the arcade at the EMU on campus is still there, I haven’t checked in over 10 years lol).
It used to be different, back in the days of SF2 Turbo and MK2. There were a TON of very decent players in this area. In fact, the former senior editor of PSM magazine, Steve Frost, used to be an avid local player (he was very good, but always wanted to Argue that VF2 was a superior game lol). The Wunderland that used to be in the 5th st. market had 8 or 9 SF2CE machines at one point.
The last big crowd for a game around here (at least that I remember) was maybe Tekken 3. After that the nickel arcades died off, and then Tilt downsized and stopped getting anything made within the last 5 years, and all of the 711s had their games removed, and the people who ran Pun-N-Video went to jail for child abuse, so all of their games went bye-bye, so the arcade scene pretty much ended. There’s a multi-arcade machine at a laundromat in Springfield by Grocery Outlet that has SF2 CE on it, I think that’s the only place that even has a SF machine in this area
I was very impressed to see so many SF4 fans turn out for the 1st round of the Gamestop Tournament at VRC. I honestly thought it would only be like 5 people that didn’t know how to play, but there were a lot of decent players there. I think all but one slot was full in the end, and every player had a very good grasp of at least intermediate techniques. It gave me some hope for the SF scene around here.
Yes. there are competitive players in MvC2, 3s, cvs2, smash (melee), and SF2. . . oops. I mean sf4. I get them mixed up sometimes. What games are you tryin to play?
You talkin about scrivens? We at level 7 daug! jk. There are people here who are worth playing, lets just say that.
There are plenty of SF’ers here. and EMU’s games are gone.
There are plenty of SF’ers here
I guess I was talking more about the arcade scene dwindling down. Like I said, I was very impressed with the gamestop tourney. There are apparently a lot more SF fans in the area than I thought. I just never see them because of the lack of coin-op games around.
Thanks for the heads up about the EUM, too. You saved me the trip of checking it out for myself (not that I was making plans anytime soon, but still). IIRC, it was Amusement Unlimited that stocked those games. I wonder if they’re still in business.
word. My bet is that there really wasn’t that many sf fans b4 that tourney. SF4 seemed to get a bunch of people out of the woodwork.
Also I remember AU but I don’t know anything about whether or not they are still around. Games are mostly played at people’s houses now.
OH SNAP. JARED IS ON SRK!!!1 kronik boom!
Also, Meliketosmash, whats up with you? There is a mvc2 tourney that we’re going to tmro if you’re in town by then and want to go. If not, then just post what you’re deal is and let’s set some mvc2 up! Peace.
Yep. How many guys show up to that?
too many. haha. like 5 to 10 at any given point in the night.
Awesome posts fellas, good stuff. Much appreciated the history of the dwindling SFer’s. I know how to play mvc2, 3s and I just picked up the SF4 for my box; however I cannot bring my joystick with me for the dc games. I hope you guys have joysticks and arent trying to kick ass with the dpad. I’m way out of practice.
I have an assignment in Eugene, so I will be there for a good while for minimum six weeks. I arrive Saturday afternoon, and since I can’t bring all my setups with me, I was looking for a local scene or a gathering that everyone comes to. If there’s not one, no big deal.
Whats it like at the Eugene university campus? I think I may be going there for some schooling if my project gets extended. No tax I hear, a lot of green trees, and cold is about all Ive heard about this place.
It’s wet more than cold, but the last few days have been awesome. Right now it feels about low 60s and sunny with a few puffy clouds, and I think that’s pretty much what the 5-day forecast looks like.
And yeah, no sales tax is great
Do you play smash MLTS?
Oregon weather is amazing
I run the (Previously mentioned) Street Fighter IV meetup every Thursday at my house. The skill levels range from newcomers who only started playing (or started playing again) when SFIV came out, to tournament players and skilled players.
I run a PS3 and have two MadCatz SE Fightsticks (One of them has an iffy medium punch. Waiting for new parts to come in so I can upgrade to sanwas). We play Street Fighter IV until people want to play something else. Smash, 3rd Strike, MvC2, Beatmania IIDX, Pop’n Music, etc.
We will have anywhere from 5-12 people show up every week. It’s a lot of fun! I usually do the events by invitation only, or if someone who attends can vouch for someone else, but if you’d like to come sometime, you can contact me and let me know a little bit about yourself. I’m not a fan of sketchy people, egomaniacs, or assholes; so if you fall into any of the previously mentioned categories, do not bother to apply!
As for myself, I’m a newbie who only started playing seriously when SFIV came out (aka the kind of person most people on this forum seem to loathe these days). I unfortunately have the innate tendency to be a sore loser, but it’s always in good fun and never gets out of hand.
Hope to hear from some of you!
@ schlagwerk… how far do you live from campus? I might be interested in playin some sf4.
I live about two miles from campus in the South Hills, but my place is pretty easily accessible from the Campus area via LTD.
so are you having people over this thursday??
I might try to make it depending on how my meeting goes at work. Work is my only reason for being here in Oregon, unless someone has a boat willing to take me fishing. :lovin:
I would like to play some mvc2 in a new area and check out the scene. I do hope no one would really admit to being sketchy because that would just be funny. Anyway, I pretty much enjoy the SF scene and do appreciate the hospitality that I am being shown.
I am staying at the crosslands on Harlow, and would not mind driving for this get together, however I would need some directions.
BTW I know all you guys are rooting for the ROCKETS to smoke the TRAILBLAZERS in the playoffs! Is anyone watching the Denver game with the Birdman?!?!?! HAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA:rofl:
Mr. BigShot
The Birdman
Nene
Melo
KMART
awesome, I want these guys to make it to the finals and win it all. If not them, then gooooo Rockets!
I also wanted to say that the Dallas Mavericks do not ever need to be in the Playoffs. They are a waste of a team in the NBA. That team has always had the talent to get to the finals, but never does. They change coaches because of no results, but it is NOT the coaching. It has to do with the Dallas mentality of their owners taking a heavy role in how the game is played in the NBA. Take for instance the Dallas Cowboys. 12 new picks in the NFL draft is the answer they need? Are you kidding me? Get rid of ROMO. Anyway back to the mavs. Their team is very one dimensional, and it is very easy to study tapes and pick out their mistakes. If Dallas plays the Nuggets next, I think everyone is in for a surprise from the Nuggets. They can very much meet the requirements to compete against the Mavs, but I believe the excitement, experience, and talent on the Nugs is much much better. The nuggets are just fun to watch, and are very unselfish.
BTW am I invited?
Whats the verdict? My work meeting was shifted to tomorrow afternoon, so I may be able to head out there early.
Schlagwerk check your PM. What time?
Anyone into halo3? I miss my xbox360 and crosslands doesnt have a stable connection, nor a connection for inputs on the back of their tvs…
Hey guys.
I registered just to respond to this, though I’ve visited this site before.
I live in the area as well, and have been for quite awhile so I was hit by the loss of arcades as much as anybody else can say. I got my start for fighting games in the arcade with one of the highlight points for me being the MK3 days. Once UMK3 came out I just thought it was too much, along with there not being a steady flow of people to play with.
Console gaming isn’t so bad, but on PS3 I know at least, the online SFIV lag can be pretty discouraging despite the noticeable improvement with the coming of the Championship Edition upgrade.
There is a Street fighter 2 CE machine at a place called El Taco Express in Springfield, but I never see anybody play on it. You’d basically have to be a customer to play on it, and be a devout fan of street fighter to go down that nostalgia trip… I must say I’ve been tempted more than once to put a few quarters in.
Anyway, I don’t intend on breaking down any doors to play with people around here, but if anybody wants to test my skill and is on PS3, my tag is the same as my username.
Oh I have to add that back in the day my mains were Guile and Dhalsim. They still kind of are, I guess I’m still trying to adjust to playing as Dhalsim on SFIV.
