These games are underrated gems. Having spent the majority of my weekend playing them with my casuals groups we’ve uncovered the true potential in the game.
The first game: Eternal Champions is a real treat.
It’s got a heavy footsies game with tick throws being the name of the game. However we didn’t play it as long as we played CftD so I’m not sure about how good the characters are. I was maining Xavier and he has a nasty corner trap.
CftD is where it’s at though. From who we played we’ve got a tier list
S+: R.A.X.
A+: Ramses III
A: Larcen, Midnight
B: Jetta, Xavier,
C: Blade
F--------: Raven
S+: RAX is so damn good because he has an infinite. The infinite leads to a dizzy then you do it again for the kill. It can be easily landed from a standing or crouching jab. Also he has ambiguous crossup setups with his divekick. Any time he hits you with a divekick he can combo into the infinite as well.
A+: Ramses is sick because he’s got tools for everything.
A: Larcen is a pretty solid character. Once he gets you in the corner you are pretty much done for. He will jump on the roof and make you eat meaty ambiguous setups. Midnight is the fucking man. He’s focused on command grabs but he has an amazing movement speed. He can walk forward and keep you in a near infinite blockstring with st.lk. It easily tick throws into his command grabs. The only problem is he doesn’t get in very well.
B: Jetta is a pubstar. She can speed up and start hitting you with crazy juggles and berserker slash-esque crossups. That kinda shit only works until you figure it out. She has very good setups with her projectile though(imagine shield throw). Xavier is just pretty good. He’s got a lot of tools and you HAVE to fight him midscreen. He can trade places with the opponent at will so you want to avoid corners.
C: Blade is kinda like ST balrog
F------: God she’s so bad. Her normals are shit and she’s based around zoning with her hour glasses. But you can only throw so many before you run out of inner power.
TL;DR: Eternal Champions is the best game to come out of the SF2 era that wasn’t SF2
Fuck yeah. I used to play this game every single fucking day. I’ve been wanting a re-release and/or a remake for years now.
What was that ninja bitches name? Shadow I think? Yeah, she was broken in the first game. I just altogether turned the game off when she came up in arcade
This, even if not high level, I always liked this game and played with a few cousins back at its time and we developed obvious basic strats. But the game is mad fun if you can pass that ITS NOT SF
Eternal champions deff gets love for nostalgia but if people think it is a good game they are very confused. It is very broken. The first one suffered from the fact that the game almost has NO legit combos what so ever. Almost every combo is actually blockable. Now on turbo speed SOME combos are real because moves act differently then they do on normal speed. However this leads to stupid infinite on hit or block. Like ive shown here before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiRKWmpzVTY&list=PLE43BE7F54EF4DD97&index=55 The second game is even worse with this. On turbo almost every character can just infinite with a multi hit move. Its super broken and a cluster fuck of a game.
Anyway its to bad sega fucked with it and got it canned, because it is cool. But if people are doing tiers you better post if you are playing on slow or turbo because its totally changes the game.
Dialup thanks for the post! yes Im well aware that the speed changes the game (and fucks it up A LOT). Also I know that CD version is way more broken than regular EC.
I used to play it with some cousins and close neirgbourghs a long time ago. Funny stuff that “sega was for grown ups and nintendo for kids” those days, and they even argued with ppl that EC was a “real man fighting game” haha. We played it day and night.
Obviously on those days we didnt knew shit about fighting game logics etc. but at the same time i think that basic fundamentals were more “cemented” in those times. We whiff punished, zoned and aa DP decently on SFII days (again NOTHING high level) so the EC game on those days revolved on tick throws, walking jab pressures and mixups again with throws (damn you Jetta walking jabs and close s.MK that hits low) and (didnt knew about that obviously) pseudo frame traps (Shadow c.Fierce if repeated its HARD to get out even jumping or Slash c.RH when blocked both hits the second leaves you at advantage even for jumping, etc). AA was mainly done with jabs jumping backwards, etc. Guys those days liked it because the less emphasys on combos and specials, and more on normals.
I sometimes compare it with SamSho (with the obvious differences).
