Essential Freeware Thread

Anyone know a good program that can rip CDs but automatically tell bitrates? Like some of my CDs sound about the same at 320kpbs as 128 or 256 for whatever reason. I’d like to backup my CDs, but also save a little file space since I’ll be porting them over to my MP3 player at one point or another.

I don’t really know if that’s possible. The best any program can do AFAIK is overwrite the data until it’s unreadable, and that shouldn’t free up any more disk space than the recycle bin and defragmentation would.

There’s progs out there that claim to do it.

A couple days ago I tried one. It spent a good 20-30 or so minutes doing stuff, but when all was said and done, Recuva was still able to recover files. At this point I guess it’s not an issue though.

So yeah, after music (replacing Winamp with the better AIMP2) and movies (replacing GOM Player with the superior KMplayer) it was time to go after a new image viewer. Love FastStone, but one thing I can’t stand was the interface. Not bad per say, but I want the option to choose what toolbar buttons show… and the skins were based off Windows’ generic default themes and there’s no way of just having it use the native system theme, so that pissed me off. Irfanview just got updated, better icons and a few other new stuff, but the menus always felt cluttered.

So here we have Imagine. I have all 3 open right now showing the same image, and Imagine is using the least memory. Imagine has the ONE feature I love about Irfanview, and that’s the ability to extract frames from a gif. It’s clean, has a lot of features and supports plugins for even more features. Love it, so far.

Hmm. What makes AIMP2 better than Winamp for you?

Faster startup, reads playlists better, uses less memory, sound seems a bit better (feature claims to have better sound output than Winamp and foobar), more stylish… just better overall to me. I can live without the live radio/tv and other things Winamp has.

Imagine is pretty good, but you can tell he’s still working out a lot of kinks (it’s nice he’s actually on his message board acknowledging bugs and such too). Certain settings never save, so I find myself changing 2 things every time I open up the app. But its definitely on my list after a couple more versions.

Edit: found workarounds for both issues, so I guess Imagine is still on top of my list for now.

Well, since SAX is (hopefully) not around, I’m going to post the revision of my master list, pt. 1 of 3.

Cool. I ended up reading that whole thread because of that post.

Are you using KMPlayer or The KMPlayer?

Cause I found The KMPlayer. http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4094

Not bad. Doesn’t support mkv subtitles that well though (GOM doesn’t either, only VLC makes it look good but everything else about VLC looks blah).

Mount .zip & .iso files without having to burn to disc.

Many programs do this already but this one does .zip files as well.

Installs as a windows extension.

I’m using the latter. The former isn’t that great, it was the original before the project got taken over and expanded on.

I have two more image viewers to test out…

PicWalker:
http://www.tucows.com/preview/366765

FastPictureViewer:

I’m interested to see how they are, but won’t be able to test them until later. Though I have doubts because PicWalker hasn’t been updated since 2004 (and doesn’t officially support Vista), and the other is commercial, with a stripped free version and a Premium version you have to buy.

TrueSpace is now FREE. (Essentially, it’s a 3d creation tool for anything from simple animations to elaborate game content. Original cost: 700$).

Download links below if you don’t want to sign up to DL. (They spam emails.)

TrueSpace 7.6

What the hell? That’s random as shit. 1.8 or whatever used to be free, but now 7.6 is? Random. I’ll sure as hell take it, though.

There is entirely too much awesome 3D software available for free right now.

So I’ve noticed in Opera, going to certain RSS feed pages results in this:

Any ideas?

Will definitely check out this TrueSpace program. Good lookin’ out.

Edit: Wasn’t diggin’ it.

I guess I’m going to have to go back to Firefox. I’ve isolated the RSS feed issue as incorrect handling of the xml pages they are on, or text/xml documents. Internet Explorer and FF reads them fine, but not Opera. And I can’t find any kind of threads or whatever about it on google.

At the very least, all I can do is wait for a new Opera version or live with it and open the pages in another browser.

Eh, do like I do. Run Opera all the time with all your main stuff open, and wen something doesn’t work perfectly, open it in firefox. That’s like, less than 1% of the tme for me.

For me, its higher than 1%. That’s the prob. Like I’ll go to a site to buy something, click cart or checkout and a whole bunch of source code will just pop up instead. Then text/xml pages are basically nothing but source code as well.

Have no idea what the issue is and can’t find any answers either.

wow, that never happens to me. Weird.
