Empty Jump into Low normal

I’m trying to incorporate this into my game play here recently and seem to have issues with the opponent grabbing or hitting me out of it. I see this happen in high level play all the time and I feel they are able to do it because the caliber of player that they are against allows them to do it (IE no crouch tech spam or mashing).

Are there any tips for this? It seems best to do it on wake up. Any tips for the timing? to get the timing perfect, the physical landing vs when you can push the input has a small delay to it.

Characters are Oni and Yang.

Do a safe jump but instead of attacking do empty jump low. I believe Oni’s is fthrow dash f+mk jump. That may be corner only? I’m sure you know them better than I would.

I don’t know about Guy or Oni, but if the opponent hits or grabs you out of it, it can only mean you’re doing it too late. The goal is to hit the opponent with a meaty attack, which is to say, as the opponent wakes up your move is already active. This way you should never be interrupted, but the timing can be a little strict.

if you are empty jumping then attacking low lets say with a crouching Medium Kick, plink light punch and light kick(Down+mk~lp+lk) this does 2 things for you. it gives you an extra frame from the plink and it will tech a throw if they go for it.

If you want to do an empty jump cr.lk that can’t be mashed out on, you have to do your jump at a timing where you land before they actually wake up, so that you can do something close to a true meaty. However, if you do this to good players, they’ll fuzzy block high -> low and never get hit.

That said, most SF4 players, even ones who are “good,” have this inherent primal urge to throw tech when someone empty jumps near them. This means that just doing a safe jump setup and then going low will usually get you bopped and you’ll feel like a moron. Nobody ever said you couldn’t do dumb stuff like empty jump SRK FADC Ultra to punish them for that. Shoutouts to Axiom’s Ryu.

However, if you make a situation sufficiently “weird,” people will stop mashing while still getting hit by the empty jump low. Space yourself a bit away from them and do a cr.mk instead of a cr.lk. Do an empty crossup. Whiff an air normal. Stuff like this only makes it look different, but it makes a psychological difference to people defensively. I don’t know why, I just know that it does. That said, if someone knows you’re going for something like this, they can and should mash on you.
