Self explanatory, really - what are good ways of reducing lag?
I know the longer your Ethernet cable, the more lag you get, for example. I think you need to straighten out the cable too, because having kinks and curls in your cable won’t help the connection either. What are the other DIY tips in that vein? Are you supposed to keep other electrical items away from your broadband cable too, or am I just making that up? Any advice or websites would be great.
First one to post “upgrade your broadband connection” gets a jpeg of a cookie.
If you really want to… make sure you’re connected directly to your dsl/modem with the 2 foot cable they give to you. Don’t even use a router. There is no ethernet gauge… and if you’re that worried about attentuation get a repeater.
But mostly everyone uses a router. Just make the XBox the DMZ Host and no one’s on your network. Log off anything with upload (this includes any instant messengers, torrents, or idling on IRC or AOL software… hell just turn your computers off.
Do some speed tests… or do what I do and have Optimum Online + Boost & Verizon DSL together lol… soon to be on a DualWAN router. (No FiOS in my area yet otherwise it would replace the DSL). Best solution (90 a month for internet for all 3 together for anyone in my area)… cheaper than $389 a month for T1.
Kinks and curls in your ethernet cable don’t mean shit.
Seriously. It’s cabling in there, and it doesn’t care if it’s curled up. Length matters, but barely (the signal travels FUCKING fast on those wires).
Not using a router is the only great way, and even then it’s only if you share or do something else with your connection while you play. If you don’t use your connection otherwise, it won’t make much of a difference.
I don’t buy any of this. I’m running my Xbox Live connection over a 50 foot CAT5e cable that I made myself, hooked up via Linksys WRT54G as my main router and using a Pelican System Selector 2.0 as my local hub (need to switch between reg. Xbox and 360). I also rock a 30Mb down/4Mb up connection (really near 35Mb down/7Mb up). My computers on the network are never pushing any upload, and my Wi-Fi is secured to the hilt, with WPA-PSK encryption and MAC address routing. In fact, I can download a maximum of 30Mb and yet still continue to keep a solid connection over live without lag or other hiccups.
