I play Elena and everyone tell me : “why the hell you don’t play Chun? Same gameplay much more powerful!”… What do you think?
Fact.
Elena and Chun basically have the same, fundamentals focused, mid-range poking style. Chun however just does everything better, especially once she has meter for SA2.
Elena does have some things better than Chun. Mainly Healing and her b.HK stops throw setups. But the deal breaker is that Elena doesn’t have amazingly good and safe pokes, a tiny hitbox when crouching, a 1 frame jab, and can’t do Low Forward into Super.
I was under the impression it was 2 frames louis.
Every year the move gets 1 frame faster
Elena’s got overheads though: f.MK, f.MP and EX Mallet Smash. The problem is that because her only cancellable low normal is cr.LK, the opponent doesn’t really have a reason to block low that much.
Although Elena’s damage output from super is low compared to Chun (along with not having any mixup options afterwards), she actually can do damage without super (Scratch Wheel if you have no meter, otherwise EX Spin Scythe for neat combos). If you’re feeling lucky you can also do ground cross-ups after doing an air reset, although this isn’t a strategy you should rely on.
However it is true that Elena is just a badly implemented character. She’s just got so many useless buttons and unfortunate design decisions (e.g. her moving idle makes it slightly harder for her to parry from neutral) that it can be frustrating to play her. I know this because my brother mains Elena, so I’ve experienced her problems second hand as he’s learned to play her. Howevever I don’t get why people both on SRK and Facebook groups outright hate her.
If anything, they should be hating on Chun-Li… And I’m speaking as a Chun main.
I just think she’s not fun to fight against.
Don’t become another Chun user cause friends dont like your character choice! They have similarities but still Elena got some uniqueness to her.
Here are some very crucial videos you should watch if you really want to step up your elena game, these have info that constantly applied by and helped season Elena vets like Orona,Magunamu., and Japans current elena Champion Talbain.
Combofiend got good with Elena back in the day cause he used to train under him.
I welcome more Chuns because there’s so few decent Chun players. There are waves of dudes sticking with Shoto characters and maybe Yun or Dudley. But almost no one picks Chun these days.
Indeed. Actually, some opponents wanted me to play Chun lol because Elena was really annoying to fight, that was funny.
Thanks for the videos, i’ll watch them.
this Elena beat me, KSK, NGUBoy, and AneurysmX last year at Evo. he ended our nights and destroyed our emotions. it is clear to me that he has a certain wisdom that we all lack.
Hayao beat KO while dressed as a little anime girl and blew kisses to everyone after. You’ll be fine.
You guys ever notice the kuro in kuroda looks like a heart?

I would like to think that 2 minute quick blurb is the equiv to IglooBob: VERSUS ELENA G’Spot hers’is notes nobody asked for. So he threw them away 5 years ago. Double shredded.
Here’s my humble 2 cents.
So I’ve been maining Chun for 5 years, but since a few months back I’ve been focusing solely on Elena. Before October last year she was completetly unknown territory for me, and although I didn’t had any understanding of the character the idea that „she’s just a crappy version of Chun“ (this has been parroted for at least 10 years mind you) was a very firm conviction in my head.
So far, I’m leaning towards that idea being bs. Sure, I can see how they basically have the same game plan, fundamentally their tools have many similarities and so on, but this is theory fighter, and if one fg game transits poorly from theory to practice it’s 3s.
First and foremost they differ in normals and how you use them, secondly in movement, mainly dashing and jumping. These two factors alone makes for rather different game plans in an actual match – not to mention the match up dependancy. And don’t forget the fact that they have vastly different specials (+ Elenas various ex-uses of them). Oh yeah and healing…
Elena may have some design flaws and Chun is a stronger character for sure (stronger than the rest of the cast as well btw), but I’m having fun as hell playing her and if anybody else feels the same way I encourage you keep on playing her. You might not win as much, at least not in the beginning, but if you believe in the beat, anything is possible.
Namaste.
Well this is 3rd Strike. A game with few absolutes.
That said, if you’re coming into the game and simply looking for the playstyle (but not any specifics), then Chun is still the easier choice.
hey hax!
Shut up!
Its something more like what situations are they thinking
dang I’m stuck, scared, and in a bad place vs Elena
If you don’t take it from me, not really an Elena. or experience vs any.
from kusumondo’s interview
You put them in a corner. Kara throw range. Wait for a mistake. Early Anti-Air, is necessary to keep them there. Which might be a big risk since they could want to jump out and you only have so many options there to keep them cornered. There are only so many normals they have to worry about at different ranges, as you’re limited on which ones you can cancel out from - so you would have to place something in there maybe more meaty to help them hit, which telegraphs more of what you want to do.
& It all started with what super did you pick. 1 for juggling, and Super Cancelling up close? 2 for confirm and whiff punish? 3 to just try to outlast someone? So how many times do you have to hit someone with your Elena to KO them. You better win damn near every midscreen and footsies battles. And have really good defense when they start putting you in bad spots, with stronger mixups.
I like Miguel A. Nunez J as an actor but I didn’t like Juwanna Man. He was the bomb in Return of the Living Dead and Leprechaun 4 though.
Alright don’t shut up hax! Just joshing you buddy.
