El Fuerte Matchups and Strategies v.2 ***Updated 02APR10***

Don’t know why this is not in the Honda quotes but it should be.

Against honda, reaction standing roundhouse beats headbutt all day (all forms of headbutt lp,mp,hp).

Fighting Honda has taught me to input Ultra backwards when he tries to do Sumo Smash upclose to cross me up. When fighting Honda, I also be careful to do safe tortilla a little later than on most characters, since his EX Sumo Headbutt and ultra seem to track better than most.

Finally I found a decent Fei Long!!! Now I can see why it is a very hard matchup.

He is very mobile and can escape almost any kind of wakeup games. I found that turtling just a bit and running a LOT helps in making him come to you, observe everything he does and as soon as he gets aggressive then start punishing. I relied a lot on counter attacking rather than trying to initiate any kind of attack myself. Fuerte really needs to be very good in reaction to counter Fei’s attacks (borderline psychic, but still doable), I found the timing to be very strict because Fei Long can immediately punish with rekkas or dash and punish with combo if there is any kind of slight timing issue.

MAKE him jump, he can’t change trajectory so an ultra punish is very helpful in this matchup, Qbomb is also helpful as it can kill his pacing when he is trying to rush down. Those are things I noticed in my very first Fei Long experience, still more to learn so i hope I get to play with him more. Any specific tips would be appreciated!!

I managed to win more in the later games, as opposed to losing badly initially. Trying to rush him down is just a terrible idea, once I started baiting a lot and doing less risks on wakeup games it became more managable. Its a very demanding matchup and requires a lot of effort, concentration, and to an extent patience.

I never had trouble with Sagat until recently… apparently all Sagat players attended a Tiger Knee Conference. Any advice for dealing with a Sagat who leverages Tiger Knee? It seems as though they have frame advantage on block.

c.lk and throw or RSF

This single handedly has saved me in almost every Sagat match-up I’ve encountered, especially in the corner. c.lk stops that TK spam pretty quickly

Oh my god, I hate playing Gen now. I ran into an awesome Gen (Mutt_Cutts on PSN) and got destroyed.

Any tips? I read up the page and it stopped.

Once you learn the match-up it isn’t ALL that awful. The hardest thing is finding a good Gen to practice against.

Quick tips for Gen:
Don’t Walljump at him, he will upkick you
Don’t focus attack as he’ll just pull out hands
Safe tortilla works if timed properly
If he goes to do an upkick, and hits you with the first hit, either keep blocking or slide under him - he can hit you with the second kick.

For Gen, make sure you keep good distance away from him or he will do the f.mk into hands which is very annoying and can be damaging if he repeats it with FADC. Try and observe his different jumps (do it in training) to know when to antiair him with tortilla or ultra, it is slightly different based on his different jumps so you have to be very careful. His jumps are kind of low so doing lk guac usually works better.

If he jumps at you and you dont know if he is crossing up or not, I usually EX run and try and punish, but there might be other strategies better than this from more experienced Fuertes. Yes, the first time I faced a really good Gen it was horrible, it felt like an 8:2 Gen kind of matchup, but trust me its even once you get fimiliar with it. You can equally punish his upkick whiffs with RSF/Ultra, and if he doesn’t have EX meter its hard for him to escape your wakeup games. Safe Tortilla is lso very helpful but don’t abuse it. Be VERY careful if he has super and ultra, he can connect them with a simple combo starting from a c.lk in one of his two styles.

I will try the c.lk on Sagat. Thanks so much!

So with Gen’s upkick/dp kick, can I focus the second hit? That’s hit me once before.

Thanks for the tips.

I don’t believe so, either block it or you can c.RH(slide) under the second hit and punish them. I think you can even airgrab him if he doesn’t do the second kick fast enough.

Thanks^

I was practicing Fuerte vs Fuerte and RSF’s on randoms in training mode, I put the computer to spam cr. HK. and it teleported through me right after a slide knockdown. Is there a list for which characters this works on?

Check the Matchup Video. There’s a condition for Balrog. you can slide after a Guac. bust out training mode.

Heres a compiled list of some great vegas to fight against…let them know u added them from VEGAS LIST

Didn’t see this in the Abel matchup info - the shower kick goes through Abel’s Ultra if he throws it out while you’re airborne - found out by accident while playing online, thought I was in for a world of pain!

Ya forward mk goes through alot of things, but your not considered airborne while you do it. You can be grabbed, sweeped, etc. out of it.

I found mixing up dhalsim very easy. ground mixups destroy sim. run stop > f.mk or slide or s.far rh will shut down his options hard. cr.lk / mk run stop mixups hurt hard too.

if theres no fireballs in effect. its pretty safe to jump in and try to air to air his j.mp ( goes horizontally across) with j.lk it will trade very rarely from what I’ve seen. and it shuts down his air to air game.
Also jumping from mid screen towards him is safe as long as you do j.fp on the way down. It will counter hit sims s.fp if he tries to make u land on it. hope that helps anyone who needed the help with this matchup.

hey fellow fuertes…ive been having trouble with my fuerte lately…i can do rsf now but it just seems like im getting beat by stupid stuff…but my question is how did you guys condition yourself to use cr.fp for jump ins? it seems like once my opponent gets near me with a jump in, is when i lose…im really not much of a defense player in the corner.

It’s really not a conditioning thing, it’s just another option that you have as anti-air and it’s his easiest one in my opinion. Fuerte is bad against pressure and the worst thing you can do is let people have free jump-ins to regain that pressure once you’re out of sweep range. It doesn’t matter what you do (guac, tostada, tortilla, c.hk, c.hp, far hk) just do something to keep your opponent from getting close to you that easy. I’ve been throwing in slide as an anti-air every now and then recently and have been getting great results against Sagats and Balrogs (as well as some others). Works well against a lot of early jump-in attacks and will go under if you space it right leading to a free throw/c.mk > mixup. But yeah dude, it’s less of a conditioning and more of a survival necessity to anti-air as much as you can.
