El Fuerte General Discussion Thread

Wait, who is still in? I thought pools are done, are there more?

Fuerte lives!?! Yes! Also. Awesome. A lone Hakan.

Peru, you’ve really improved a lot not just in skill but also mentally since I’ve seen your games months back - much respect, mang.
Even in disadvantageous situations you kept your cool and went on with the gameplan.

Keep up the good work.

It took me a full day to realize that Peru was you xP

EDIT: I want to know what happened to Vanilla.

EDIT 2: Wow…7 days off of Super and I am so bad at this game. I’m losing to scrubs but some of my habits are gone

so are their any fuerte’s in the semifinals?

also why is there HDR on the stream? wasn’t super sf4 stream supposed to start like 2 hours ago???

It was supposed to be on an hour ago. I want to know why Seb is there, he said he wasn’t going to be there.

No El Fuertes guys.

We might not have made it even to semis, but I can’t complain about those that represented us. Great job, guys.

I do need to complain that the commentators called Fuerte’s second alt. Mayan and Incan and then suggested tamales as a prize for a Ken-like tournament.

Yea I am proud of you guys, keep up the good work. I think Peru is quickly becoming my favorite US fuerte

Any one have or know where I can find some vids of the fuerte’s that played in pools?
Also right now Gootecks + teamspook and Machinama are hosting a stream for Money matches

TeamSpooky on USTREAM: Super Street Fighter 4 Casuals at the Team Sp00ky house!. Gaming Entertainment

Kai’s goina be fighting Gamerbee soon so check it out if you can =)

Doesn’t Kai know he can cr.HP the jaguar specials?

Kai ended up loosing 2 games for gamerbee : 1 game for Kai

I have a question. If El Fuerte sucks at footsie, then what IS El Fuerte’s game? Whenever I use him, I want to play the spacing game with safe tortillas and st. far HK, but he’s an entirely different character who breaks a lot of traditional SF essentials, and yet, for some reason, it’s still hard to try to figure out WHAT gives him an advantage.

So my conclusion has been that El Fuerte has speed and the mix up potential. Great, now here where the problem comes. Most players can’t read El Fuerte’s speed in time to react. So what makes the players who use El Fuerte be able to react at the same time? Nothing! What I’m saying is, there’s no chance in hell anyone can have the reflexes to utilize El Fuerte’s speed to its maximum potential by “seeing” every frame by frame play. Therefore, we have made it up by using “predefined trained techniques.”

Option select is like a easy version of this, but most of this is seen when people perform combos. However, for El Fuerte, we have to take these “katas” one step further, and have it transcend into El Fuerte’s movement game. Something I have not seen ever discussed on the El Fuerte board in detail is El Fuerte’s mindgames.

For example, one common mindgame is Ex run -> stop to trick players into think you’re going to hit them. But what if we develop more advanced katas from here? What if we create katas where El Fuerte run -> slide, BUT does it from a distance when he doesn’t actually hit the player. From here, it’s a mindgame of spacing, from which you can follow up with HK, splash, tortilla, or go for another slide, or walk up throw. I want to see El Fuerte’s mobility game emphasize more because for the most part, it has seemed that a lot of us have only been winging it with making our opponents guess, jumping around as if we’re trying to trick them out. Every move needs a purpose.

Evo got me thinking about this because there should be no reason El Fuerte shouldn’t ascend to a higher level. There is hardly any counter picks for him mainly due to his wild card nature. Please tell me if I’m wrong or right in what I’m saying. I just want to give some discussion on the future of the luchador. I want to fix this “all or nothing” game style he has, if it can even be fixed at all. Seth is an exception because he has crazy offense with minimal defense.

I get what youre trying to say El_Cor, but it seems to me like youre not approaching it right when youre thinking about it. For example:

THIS is, in essence, Fuerte footsies.

If youre playing Fuerte, every move SHOULD have a purpose, or youre simply not playing him right. As you have said. The point i think you have missed is WHY are we run stopping? Or, in the example you gave, WHY are you stopping the slide early to make it safe? Its NOT to set up a mixup as you said it was. (if this was the case, why not just go for the mixup outright?)

We stop the run (or the slide, as it were) so that we can see what our opponents reaction to it is. This is the essence of footsies. Learning what your opponent is thinking. When we KNOW what our opponent is thinking, our mixup game becomes a lot stronger, because we can accurately anticipate their reaction, and go for a mixup that will BEAT what they are going to use.

This is what separates a good fuerte from a bad fuerte. A bad fuerte will go into a match thinking “im gonna mindfuck this guy by doing a bunch of random shit that he wont understand and he will lose.” This will work pretty well for a short amount of time to be fair, but ultimately, its going to get you nowhere as a fuerte player. A GOOD fuerte will go into a match thinking “im going to fake this guy out, learn his gameplan, and THEN im going to mindfuck him by counterplaying his reactions BEFORE THEY EVEN HAPPEN” THIS is what Fuerte’s biggest strength is. His ability to reveal how his opponent is thinking/reacting.

Example: Lets say i run -> stop at someone a couple of times, and i see that he is jumping back with his HK to try and beat my splash. Now i know what he is expecting me to do, so that the next time i run at him, i can stop, and go for an EX guac, beating out his jumping HK.

This is an example on a very basic level. But lets take it a step further.

This is where the headfuck begins. Now this guy is worried about the same thing happening again, so he isnt going to go for another jb.hk. What this means, is that essentially, you are limiting his options mentally. This opens up your mixup game. Now youre free to splash him a couple of times. Go for it. Now we run -> stop again. Our opponent is probably a little worried at this point. Fuerte is running at him, hes still a little scared of the EX guac, hes just been hit by some splashes (probably through blocking wrong) so he is unsure of what to do now. Either he will adjust his block, or he will bust out the inevitable DP. But you stopped your run. If he adjusted his block, the game is reset to an extent. Since you have scored some damage, you actually come out on top. Now you can begin telegraphing him again. If he went for the dragon, then, as the old saying goes, “Its raping time.”

Obviously, not every match will play out exactly this way, but your thought process should be the same. You DONT want to be trying to random your opponent out with fuerte spam. You want to be using fakes, and calculated risks (sometimes even sacrificing a bit of your lifebar) to gauge your opponents reactions, so that you can set up a similar situation, but tweak it so that it is significantly in your favour. If youre playing the ‘all or nothing’ game, youre essentially just going for 50/50 mixups. If youre playing the ‘knowledge is power’ game, then the SAME MIXUPS from the ‘all or nothing’ game, become more like 80/20 mixups in your favour.

Fuerte should be using his tools to read his opponent. If you know what your opponent wants to do, you can counter it preemptively. Hes going to think nothing is working, and hes going to panic. You’re calm, he’s worried. Hes making mistakes. He’s mindfucked. PROPERLY mindfucked. Congratulations Fuerte, you just won the match.

Went 3-2 @ Evo:

Beat a Chun/Seth player (changing to Seth was such an awful idea, his Chun took the first game and I think he might have beaten me if he had stuck with it)
Beat a Balrog
Beat a Blanka
Lost to Balrog (ShowStopper is apparently his name)
Lost to Adon (GamerBee) <— Absolute favorite match I’ve played this weekend, was tense and I really think I could have taken it.

Been drinking a ton ever since. Evo rocks.

@ILL_BILL: completely agree, only way to make Fuerte a consistent character is to be calm, patient, and understand your opponent very well. Fuerte doesn’t have to deal with much BS in super like before, and can definitely cope with almost any matchup, so winning/losing with Fuerte depends heavily on the player and the choices he makes.

Interestingly, you prob know the match-up with Adon better than Kai.

One tactic that has worked consistently for El Fuerte is standing outside of sweep range on some characters. I make sure to have him “stick” to a character since it gives him the range for all his moves while allowing for safe splashes or tortilla if I decide to keep the steering short or normal range. Provided, this will have a lot of characters leap up to try to jump at you or cross you over, but simply guac or jump throw shuts down that option. One good thing about El Fuerte is that he can’t be cornered unless you made it happen, and even then, he can get out with the right options. Especially with U2. I like to keep it stocked just to tell my opponent not to get too close, and if they do, well free U2.

I’ve been thinking about making El Fuerte more aerial since his defense against cross up games suck other than slide under or Ex run under.

Someone posted they brought tacos to a tournament while playing fuerte a few days ago.

I’m thinking this is a good idea, I might just bring them to Evo next year and give them to every person I beat.

I’ll tell them the tacos are made specially for them to cheer them up, and their taste reflect how they are currently feeling. Super Salty.

But. El Fuerte cooks for them to mak them feel better. Not to make them suffer from You Mad.

Definetly gonna go next year
