I’m calling it now. Attendance for fighting game tournaments will steadily decline going forward. You already see it because of the increasing number of stream monster : pot monster ratio. There is now officially a clear divide between the sponsored players and everyone else in terms of skill gap with the occasional exception. Too many fans and not enough competitors. Lots of grey area on this discussion but my opinion is that this is a bad thing overall.
FGs are definitely turning into more of a spectator sport.
that’s not a problem at all. a product that is strong as a spectator experience will ALWAYS enjoy a healthy amateur scene. there will be a lull for sure, brood war was the same way when the korean pros started flying overseas to rape nonkorean tournaments, but it’ll be good overall. there’s always gonna be new blood.
the lull will occur during a time when there are a bunch of sponsored players, but the spectator aspect is still relatively weak. like right now, it’s very difficult to find out when events are happening, where they’re being streamed, etc. there’s also no real data tracking going on, which is huge for this sort of thing. people fucking love statistics. once everything is a little more set up, the spectator experience will be awesome, and that always draws new players. everyone starts out a scrub, it’s creating a proper vessel for their passion that makes a killer.
playing hockey with your friends is great watching a hockey game is better? If thats how it goes im all for it.
