EA vs Marvel

Characters will be grouped into three stregnth levels, so Elektra won’t be able to lift a bus or anything.

It goes deeper than that. Think of it as a purposely designed low tier. After all Elektra shouldn’t possibly be able to defeat Iron Man, right?

As for the comic, look for an EA character named Megalith to show up, sooner or later.

Yeah, I don’t think Elektra could defeat Iron Man. Iron Man beat Psylocke in the Contest of Champions II, well, that’s the closest comparison I can think of. But all these battles are at the whim of whoever’s writing which book.

Megalith, huh? The names are getting better. Thanks!

From the Marvel Nemesis comic, possible alternate outfits for Spider-Man, Thing, Wolverine and Elektra.

Technically give the right situation, Elektra could beat Iron Man. But he would have to be pretty slow, dumb, and have shitty armor, since really the main thing she could do is stab/slash him or have something in the environment fall on him.

The first trailer is out. Looks pretty damn good! :wow:

Awsome trailer! :woot: Also, I liked how that guy explained how the game works. It sounds pretty good.

Special thanks to Stormfan of Gamefaqs for pointing this out. Check this link for issue four of the Marve Nemesis comic’s cover - scroll about half way down, you can click on the cover to see it larger. Looks like Storm is in the game (she’s standing next to Wolverine) and they mention Daredevil in the story’s description so chances are he’s in too.

I played the demo at E3 this week. If you guys are expecting a fighter then you’re going to be disappointed. This game feels like powerstone, only not as fun.

special move meters = dumbest idea ever

it’s how bad designers figure out how to balance their game.

Yeah, I played it at E3 Today.

Ok, I hate to say it, but for anybody here on SRK who likes fighting games, you will NOT like this game. Period. Not a chance.

The levels are Free Roam 3D, which means 8 way run/fly all the time. There is no strategy at all, just random mashing, and getting the same combos over and over. Theres no poking, zoning, high/low games, cross ups, mind games, or anything.

Using Iron Man, I was able to fly across the screen, pick up something huge, and toss it at wolverine. This was the only effective way to fight. Getting in close and mashing Square gets old really fast. Square, Square, Square (launch), X (jump), Square. Rinse, repeat.

Oh yeah, holding R1 Activates your special moves, so by holding R1 I could charge up and shoot lasers at Wolvie, or put up a protective shield. For Wolvie, holding R1 would unsheath his claws.

This game is made to appeal to the masses, not to fighting games fans. It will be fun, no doubt, but by no means will it live up to the quality of a fighting game we expect. Eye Candy, EA style.

On a side note, I had more fun playing on the sold school Super SF2 Cabinets and the console 3rd strike on sticks downstairs then I did with this crappy game : /

Final Report: Not SRK material. I would call it Smash Brothers light, as it takes a simple fighting games system like smash, but strips it of everything that makes that game complex at higher levels.

Iron Man is already broken. :wow: Repulsor Rays are as FAST as
Cyclops’s Optic blasts.

pretty stupid

you know what else went by power levels and purposely made stronger characters “stronger”?

svc chaos.

if it’s true that they are doing that then they will only make the game worse most likely

i didnt expect much from this game, but i thought there might be a small chance it might be good, but nope now youve gauranteed me its crap :frowning:

Bleh…

Update on this. Apparently the name Megalith is already taken, so he’s been renamed Brigade. This is the non-electrical character seen in the trailer. Aftershock is another original character.

Yeah, Storm and Daredevil are in the game. Look for Magneto and Venom too.

I know i wouldn’t mind seeing crossups or high low guessing games leave myself, since a lot of them now are just about being fast or tricky with a 50/50 setup copied from somewhere, and not about having real mind games or understanding of the opponent.

If we are supposed to be some hardcore fighting game players, wouldn’t it make more sense to take this game and find ways to improve it than to alienate one of the few companies that is willing to even market a US fighting game. If it takes us playing the hell out of the game and sending some people to EA than i say lets do it. At least if they ignore us then we’ve done what we can.

I know people have tried to take capcom up on many oppourtunities to work with tournaments, provide feedback for games, etc… and those were ignored. Thats about 1000x more leniency than we’re giving EA, and it’s not like we’ve even played one tourney on their game yet.

Lets stop accepting “don’t play this game” as an answer, unless there is some fighter I don’t know about, I don’t see the alternative but to see where EA wants to take this before jumpinh ship.

Also consider that the top fighting games are DOA,MK,and SSBM, I’m more interested in how it compares to them more than it compares to a T5 or a SF game.

Thanks, very happy to hear about Magneto and Venom. For a while there I thought there would be no Super Villains.

Venom in the game at least tells us that if the story is part of Marvel’s continuity, it’s not happening right now. The symbiote left Eddie Brock and he slit his wrists, is in the hospital under critical condition. Magneto is… sort of a good guy now but he will go back to being a villain in the House of M storyline.

Personally, I’ll hold out on forming an opinion of the game until we get more info about the game, people play it more, we get better reviews of it and what not. I know that I will get the PSP version since that’s supposed to have more Marvel characters and I love the PSP for it’s multifunctionality (I use it mostly to watch trailers, read manga, listen to music) but there’s not to many games on it I want to play right now (Only Darkstalkers and Metal Gear Acid and I have them both, looking forward to SFA3 and Guilty Gear). The Home Console version is up in the air with me. And that’s about where I stand right now. Just waiting for more info and praying that Deadpool makes the cut…

There is always room for improvement, since this was still a very early build. However, I can tell from the direction they’re going that they are only interested in selling units. The game is like MK:D, with only one attack button. One hit to knock somebody off the roof and win the match… one button to do combos over and over… one button to rule them all, and in the darkness bite them (you get the drift).

I guess it comes down to what you think makes a fighting game good. For most people, it’s pretty visuals and crazy combos that are easy to learn. For SRKers, it’s about mind games and exploiting the system to its fullest potential. That is why I say SRKers will not like the game, but it will sell well, and gamepro will proclaim it to be the best fighting game ever.

I mean, look at the facts:

  1. They are using power levels and forced tiers (i.e. Iron Man has way high stats, spider-man doesn’t. Therefore, Iron Man is designed to win this fight every time). Think of the higher tiers as ST Akuma (hopefully, it will be more like C-Sagat and this argument will be moot), then tell me what kind of truly competitive scene it will have?

  2. One button to attack, another button to use special moves… sounds like they took a page from dragon ball z, and we all know how well the combat in that game is. In fact, it plays VERY similar to DBZ, as you can rise and fly around (provided you are a flier) in 8-way movement mode. Again, I played Iron Man against wolvie, and all I had to do was fly away, making it pretty much impossible to catch me.

  3. What EA game has a life cycle more then a year? They release games that are meant to be digested and recycled, that’s how they make their money. If they are truly willing to go and make a deep, rewarding, flashy, best selling, marvel licensed, critically acclaimed fighting games then I can’t wait. However, nobody is willing to do that anymore. Our genre is dead. To hold your breath and expect anything more from EA is silly.

The comic came out today. It showed Daredevil as Matt Murdock and Storm who we already know are in, but they also showed the Human Torch in the comic too, so we can get our “Flame On!” on!

Hmmm, still no Captain America. I’m starting to think he’ll be a no show. And patriotism takes another blow, oooh…

Another new character in the comic was a girl named Benedetta, but her, Johnny Ohm and some green thingy are about to get ‘upgraded’ so we don’t know what they will come out looking like yet, unless she’s that girl on cover #4, and we know what Johnny Ohm’s gonna look like.

Johnny Ohm was a prisoner Matt Murdock tried to get off who was in for murder but was innocent. Somehow the Aliens or whoever faked everybody out by placing a copy of his body in the Jail Cell making it looked like he hung himself (or something like that…) and he’s off to get his upgrade. For a second there when I saw Johnny on deathrow I thought he was going to get his powers after being put in the Electric Chair like Megavolt in Darkwing Duck, LOL!

My point is that having MK:D isn’t bad at all, what’s bad is having MK:D and keeping the first version as the final version.

I disagree with you a bit on that, If you ask everyone what the ‘most’ technical fighter of the evo lineup is, they are going to probably say VF4 based on the criteria you said. However there are 17 people signed up. The game with the most entries is 3s, not the deepest, and not the prettiest, but has a little of everything, a balanced game in that sense.

I don’t think this is that relavant, spiderman isn’t excatly buff in mvc2 either. At least EA is telling you up front so if spiderman is all of a sudden top tier, we know theres a problem, or a feature!

doesnt VF only have 2 attack buttons and one guard? this doesnt’ sound like a huge deal. I’m not saying that there won’t be dumb stuff like IM vs wolvie, but we survived about 2 years of storm runaway when it was hot. And if your next point holds, we’ll already be in V3 of the game by then.

I don’t agree with the road your taking, while people will certainly disagree with changes that are made, i don’t really see anyone saying “Man madden 06 sux compared to 99 version, the gameplay was so deep back then”. They at least seem to attempt to advance the ball, i agree that this past year the ESPN offering had some advantages, but im not going to say it was a totally better game.

IMO its premature to just assume that EA doesn’t care until we give them a chance to not care, the worst case scenario is that they decline to improve the game, and we have a decent list for whatever company does want to make a good game. The best case is that they take the next EA vs marvel (which according to this assumption would just be a year later anyway) and make it better.

I don’t see the point of saying fighting games are ‘dead’, as strange as it may sound, it’s also irrelavant. The real questions are: “Is there free money in a marvel licensed game, if it were done well and marketed properly?”, yes, “can tapping into the US’s largest fighting game community speed up the process of getting to this free money?” yes. What else is there to know? If EA doesnt want the free money, someone else will take it.
