Well I’m just gonna look at this situation from the warped view of a Capcom employee.
Capcom is working with Disney (and Wayforward but for this situation they are less important) for Ducktales HD. Working with Disney to get a Disney license means they could have shifted the direction towards Marvel licenses now that Disney owns Marvel.
A lot of people have been asking for Marvel 3 to get a patch, and Capcom has said they couldn’t because the team has been working on other projects and maybe licenses could be an issue, they never really clarified. Meanwhile, Street Fighter 4 is getting a new update. Some people have speculated that SF5 is coming soon, and I don’t think that’s the case with SF4 getting an update. Capcom does not update games if they plan to kill them off soon, that would be wasted development, resources, and money. Marvel 3, on the other hand, is not getting an update. It would be wasted development, resources, and money to patch it because it would be a sink to even get the team and licensing together to even work on the patch, so why not just make a brand new game? It’s been like a year since the last update, it’s time for a new revision, just like every Capcom game gets.
Basically, if you think about it in a really stupid way, even though Marvel 4 is unlikely, it’s not impossible.
MVC3’s lack of “Marvelousness” and SFxT’s announcement pretty much killed my hype for video games, period. After that let down, I just became less interested in everything. Only way I could see myself being genuinely intrigued over a video game is if Capcom or SNK does something Out of left field like a new Vampire, Last Blade, Rival Schools, or even a new Kizuna encounter. Doesn’t even have to be something I want, just a fighting game I would not expect. These guys are just so predictable, now.
The old Capcom sprite artists (the work after sf2) were some of the best animators around. On hardware more limited than the neo geo they were able to produce great animations and is one main of the trademarks of the Darkstalkers/Vampire series.
Add disable animated background option to reduce lag when necessary.
Maybe also allow players to modify stats like character health bar and to save it. Then a player will have the option of loading default data set or the modified sets and for online play default will be used and a player can request to use a custom and the other player can choose to decline.
No lie… I don’t like MvC3, and I loved and played MvC2 for like 11 years… But people gotta jump off the MvC2 bandwagon. The game’s done, with maybe an active fanbase of about 40 players total - not including online players, as there’s still a good amount of those, but the people that actually will go to events and have live matches to keep up the hype. People like @NickRocks and GoForBroke, Khaos, and a few others come to mind.
That said, I wouldn’t mind a modded MvC2 that had things like MorriDoom shit from MvC3. I wouldn’t mind some balance updates too, but NO FUCKING NERFS… Just up everyone else until they’re on par with MSS… The reason MvC2 was played for so long was the versatility and variety found in those three characters. The imbalance is very overlooked when discussing that, just because you can take a character like Sentinel and have more options with that character alone than in some entire fighting games.
I think a lot of MVC2 fans tend to over-exaggerate the supposed versatility of Magneto, Storm, and Sentinel.
The reason that they were so “versatile” was because they were just more complete characters than everyone else on the roster.
They all could fly, rushdown, and keepaway, while the rest of the characters either boil down to “dash in, crouching LK”, or Jumping HK. It’s not like the top 3 just had this oceanic level of depth.
Don’t forget too, there’s a lot more that can be done with them than just the three things you mentioned. Three of the 4 of them have unblockable attacks (Sent’s c.hp, Mag’s c.lk on Sent only, and Cable’s 4th bullet. Two of them are used constantly). Their movement is also vastly superior, enabling them to do a lot, where saying "rushdown’ is a vast understatement. I don’t think there’s a character in any game that gets in your head nearly as much as Magneto in MvC2 does. It’s not just that they can do those things, but the way that they do it? Magneto can nail you from all 4 sides and do a throw before you blink. Sentinel is a fucking wall where you’re constantly trying to figure out how to get in on him. Cable… You have to always be alert, because one mistake, your character dies. Storm is another fucking wall. Only Sentinel can get through her s.hk.
TLDR: It’s not just that they can play rush and run, it’s that they all have an arsenal of things they can do within each. Perfect example would be how differently Sanford and Justin play Storm/Sent. It’s like they’re playing different characters.
