So… E3 2019 has come to an end yesterday.
What’s everybody’s general thoughts on this year’s convention?
Despite it being placed right at the (or near of) current console generation, surprisingly there were still plenty of news across dozens of studios and publishers. According to my calculations we got at least 50 new games announced for a multitude of platforms, even though majority of them came from indie/smaller developers.
I guess everybody already knows, but EA naturally had the weakest showing. Not only did they not really reveal any big new games, their scheduling was very weird and they completely left out 4 EA Originals titles out of the show. Could’ve spent time on those instead of talking about fucking ball physics in FIFA 20
Microsoft had the strongest showing in terms of sheer volume of games shown and third party announcements, but I really think Phil shouldn’t have made that “14 games” tweet before the Briefing. Technically he was correct but he sorta made it sound like they were announcing completely new titles, while out of 14 there were maybe 3 actual reveals. Regardless, they didn’t talk too much and showed a lot of stuff, plus we finally got the confirmation that indeed the next console generation will kick off in 2020, and that Scarlett and PS5 will be equal in power, more or less anyway
Bethesda’s showing was terrible. More of the same shit they had for the last several years, with only actual good news being Youngblood’s release date, DOOM’s release date, and announcements of Deathloop and Ghostwire. Igumi-chan will forever remain as E3’s waifu/idol character
Devolver is 10/10 as usual. There’s no additional words needed and I am super stoked for (final?) part of their Cinematic Universe saga. Plus the game announcements of theirs this year were cool, I’m definitely interested in Carrion and Messenger’s getting a free DLC which is super awesome
PC Gaming Show - nothing out of the ordinary. Great hosting duo with Day9 and Frankie Ward, an excellent lineup of titles that would otherwise completely fly under the radar, fuck Epic, bring on 2020
Ubisoft were actually alright this time. They still cling onto the Bathroom Break with the Just Dance segment but at least the opener with Watch Dogs Legion was definitely solid and I want to know more about Gods & Monsters. 7/10
Square Enix got heavily carried by FF7 Remake and Avengers, with some neat announcements inbetween, but I can appreciate them showing mostly trailers and gameplay with talking only relevant to the topics at hand, no corporate bullshit, though I can’t help but feel that Outriders’ reveal was rather barebones and apparently we’re not getting news until Winter? Wack
Overall, it’s pretty clear that EVERYBODY among the big players are saving their big guns for next year as, despite having backwards compatibility, you’ll still need a launch lineup for people to actually go to the stores and grab the latest hardware from Sony and Microsoft, and I can guarantee that majority of titles schedules for 2020 will be receiving some kind of a rerelease/upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Two with improved visuals, framerates and so on and so forth, this industry loves double dipping and I doubt we’ll stop seeing remasters any time soon, just look at the amount of them that were released over the course of this generation alone
MARK YOUR CALENDARS, BOYS!
