Dudley Q&A: Let's learn... like Gentlemen!

I think Dudley’s design in Super is problematic enough that everyone that mains him has at least considered dropping him at some point. This board is like the elephants graveyard of players that simply could not pull themselves away from the classiness of British dandy boxing for the land of top tier simplicity.

Yet I’m still using him. My problem is, I really was so bad at SF4. I didn’t enjoy it all that much because I was getting anal-raped online. (25% win ratio? don’t remember) But when SSF4 came out, I remember using Dudley and enjoyed his style of play in 3s when I went to my friends house. I picked up Dudley in super, but it took me a while to learn him, I think I used him somewhat properly after the summer time ended after I learned abot block strings, pressure, footsies and BIG punish combos such. My problem right now is my spacing against ALL the characters because I’m so used to being up close but against characters with great footsies (chun, t hawk, etc.) I used to lose to them a lot back then, but now I can somewhat keep up the fight. I just still have a lot of bad matchups against more than half the cast… but I’m waiting for AE. I’m just playing in endless to get my overall game (pressure, mixups) going but I still play the same as 4-5 months ago… still trying though.

hey guys, just wanna know. after forward throw, mk.duck > jump in HK. This safe jump setup is used against which reversal srk? 3f? 4f? 5f?

I “never” considered dropping Dudley.
Maybe quitting SSF4 altogether but never dropping Dudley.

Never considered dropping Dudley either. I do too well with him.

Derailing thread.

Dudley is the best character in the game.
he doesnt take shit from nobody’s fireballs and has best combos in game
(yun doesnt count, c.MP x3, c.MK, xx EX lunge, LP lunge is BULLSHIT)

Greetings gentlemen

I started playing Dudley a few weeks ago and I’ve gotten most of the basics down but I have 1 question which should be very simple to answer.

Is there any benefit to doing f.MK s.MP s.HK EX MGB instead of f.MK s.HK EX MGB? I’ve gotten the first combo down consistently but not the second, even though both normals after f.MK are 4 frames which I find strange. Am I doing less damage/stun with the first combo? If I am, would it be worth getting the 2nd combo down consistently instead of the first?

The s.mp adds more stun and damage, but it doesn’t work on around half the cast - mostly the smaller ones and E Honda. However, it’s honestly not to essential to get the s.mp in there anyway. Off a focus crumple the juicy stuff is cr.hp -> s.hk (works on everyone I believe). f.mk cr.mp s.hk works on everyone but that’s 2 1 frame links - as far as I know though, it is maximum damage. f.mk -> s.mp also does not work on most crouching characters.

You can plink s.mp or s.hk to make it more consistent and just remember that the timing for the s.hk is probably faster than you think.

in the latest jap tourney. kuroken (dudley) lands quite a number of raw lp jet uppers and i find it weird cos it has six frames startup. is there a change on its hitbox? or the invulnerable frames are changed?

it’s grab invincible
and its 4 frame start up i believe

edit
holy shit i never knew LP and MP Jet Upper were 6 framers

Unless they changed the lp version it’s 6 frames. Only HP/EX is 4.

really? It always felt like mp jet upper (now that I have been using it recently for trades) feels like a 4 framer… but then that explains why I get beat a lot by ryu jump ins.

Explains fucking everything.
Vega vs 34 MU just became 6.5 : 3.5 up from 7.5 : 2.5

If the Vega turtles… this match is all Vegastbh against Vega… all you can really try to do is counter poke and anti air him, block his wall dives and punish (U1, duck to get near and punish obv) this match is all Vega’s really.

I was the same way in vanilla. Started playing SF4 on PC using Sim. So I was already using a strange character to learn the game’s systems with which really slowed my progress. I didn’t start really understanding the mechanics until I started going to the local gatherings where I was playing against guys like Sabre, Mr. SNK, ect, and getting some good advice from those guys. So going from Sim to Dudley was a huge jump in trying to understand not just the character, but the game itself. That was around the time that I thought Dudley was too bad to continue with, but for some reason I just could not pull myself away.

Spacing is probably what I consider my strongest aspect nowadays. Which comes from the fact that I couldn’t keep my hand steady enough for links until around last November. But I was pulling my pp/bp up into the 3000/8000 range solely with simple punish combos and counter-poke combos. So to get any wins, I really tried hard to compensate my poor execution with the best footsies that I could, which is why I always prattle on about counter-poking in all these threads. I’m sure ThirtyFour can recall how much st. FP I used back then.

But then I stopped caring about ranked when I hit 8888 bp and only practiced in endless. I keep thinking I should maybe try to go back to ranked to see how much higher I could go now that I can link reliably and have improved my overall game play, but I really like that BP number.

Back then around Aug. my execution was okay, but my footsies were horrible. I still think my footsies are horrible which is why I get beat by simple footsie characters like Ryu, Ken, etc. I play ranked because I want to fight 4k pp or high and see how I do against them. I think I do pretty good but some are just really bad because they just straight mash DP and fireball for unnecessary reason so they get punished. The highest PP I got to was 4400+, with an A ranked… until I made a new account. My PP in this new account WAS 4300+… then started losing to random Honda’s online who turtled so hard, and BP of 9500+. Really I don’t plan on playing ranked anymore, trying to fight different people instead of fighting the same people everyday on Endless. It’s like using the same mindset every match, which you’ll then get accustomed to, and then you lose against someone else you never fought because you’re so used to fighting one way instead of the other… my biggest weakness: footsies, holding down-back, and as thiryfour said, playing that matchup and not the character which means I suck.

having 5 digit bp is nice, but i feel like a fraud when i lose with it. Keep that 8888, that’s gdlk, and keep up in endless.

do my eyes deceive me? did i see that jap dudley player do… combo into LP Jet upper… EX ducking Straight INTO Ex Ducking UPPER???

did dudley just do an anti air LP jet upper into ducking straight INTO EX DUCKING STRAIGHT!?

15k BP here, highest PP 4.8K, currently at 4.2K.

My dick is so big.

at that point… winning gets you 10 BP and 5 PP… losing takes 50BP and 120PP away…

iono how some players get to 30k without boosting.

then it shrunk when it hit 4.2k… sick one.
