Dudley Q&A: Let's learn... like Gentlemen!

Have you SEEN his avatar? LOL.

I’m starting to get into Rolling Thunder a bit more for certain MUS

ryu
Honda
Blanka
possilby-Rose.

I just like u2 because ANYTIME my opponent makes ANY mistake and I have ultra…they eat it. Thats why Dudley is such a good/fun secondary for my ibuki. I HAVE AN ULTRA that does DAMAGE, higher health and stun, i can still pressure, more damaging AA options while still using normals if i want, and my reversal is actually useful if I FADC it. W ibuki, it can lead to a mix up opportunity but its not guaranteed good dmg. With dudley I go “lol, ultra!” like all day.

off of lp jet lol
anything in corner lol
cr lk-mk TC in lp jet upper. lol
EX MGB mid screen
EX mgb-duck upper FADC-Ultra

I LOVE it. It’s easier to get off more so than Rufus IMO.

Meaty crouching short on Bison’s wake up rapes him. You can punish anything he throws out. 5-5 bro.

I still think Gief might be 5-5 if your footsies are good enough. I don’t really have trouble keeping out good ones with Dudley’s normals, and surprising them on wake up for big damage isn’t too hard either if you’re smart about it.

Vega can lame it out all day with his crouching jab. The only way you’re getting in on him is if his footsies suck or if he doesn’t anti air your jump in.

I still think Guile Honda and Sim are Dudley’s worst matchups. The others really aren’t too bad.

I used to think its 5-5 but imo dictator dudley is 6-4 because of how dominant his footsies are. You have to take risks to get in and they will not pay off if the dictator is playing it right, the only saving grace is you can try jumpins against him because of his poor punishes.

I play almost daily against helltpm probably one of the best dictators in EU, ill try to upload some videos of a good serie against him.

hmm. interesting.

agrees about mus

what do you think about hawk? I think it sucks.

What do you guys like to do in the mu vs giefs? I think that mu blows.

First off, don’t jump at him. You’ll end up trading with his lariat and he can finish it up with a ex green hand and his mixup begins. What you want to do is keep him out with forward strong and counter poke with standing fierce/cr. forward. If you’re bold enough, you can use forward fierce at a range that makes it safe to get a mixup going, assuming gief tries to punish with a SPD. You’ll either beat all of him jump ins clean or you’ll trade in your favor with standing fierce and corkscrew cross. You can save your meter for when you get knocked down or put in an unsafe situation where you would need to FADC. Punish half screen focus attacks with EX MGB.

I think the biggest problem with a lot of Dudley players is that they have poor footsies and aren’t willing to play patiently. The ones I play online I usually beat without having to use any big combos.

Sharin, I think it may be slightly in Bison’s favor, maybe 5.5 4.5 but I don’t think it’s tough enough to be considered 6-4. Standing forward and roundhouse can mess a Dudley up in the right hands. I’d love to see your videos.

I would just like to point out that st. Roundhouse comes out faster than either of the Dictator pokes and st. Fierce is same speed, so if he goes for them after the short scissors in theory you can mash that out and at least get a trade. I don’t play many pajama dudes so don’t know how well this works.

Best frame traps/counterhit setups, you guys?

I sometimes do cr.lp, cr.lp, st.hp. Sometimes f.mk to either st.hp or dart shot. What about you guys?

cr.lp/f.mk -> cr.lp/f.mk/s.hk xx lk ducking/s.hp/cr.mp xx ducking

was gonna make a new thread regarding this because i think it deserves its own thread but anyone else aside from Marn figuring ways to use empty ducking crossup as a reset?

i.e. marn’s pulled off FA 2 crumple >cr lp/lk xx short ducking, and then either low or overhead on the other side. While maybe not always the best option for taking advantage of a focus crumple, a successful reset means subsequent damage won’t scale so badly and might even get another stun or full source of damage.

Any other ways to get it aside from a crumple? Idk, maybe an air to air normal or idk. There has got be another effective reset.

I know I tested this in the corner with s.hk xx ducking but I don’t remember what the result was. But cr.mp xx ducking can cross up or not depending on whether you hold forwards and which version of ducking you use.

You can probably do the crossup after AA s.mp xx ducking but Dudley’s best AA normals can’t be cancelled. S.hk isn’t that great of an AA normal in SSF4 as it was in 3s.

s.hk ducking never seems to cross up, I did alot of testing with this awhile ago. I didn’t test every character but I never could get it to cross up. Cr.mp is technically the best option to mixup whether your duck crosses up or not, but it can be un-reliable to actually control it.

Guys wanted to ask, what are the benefits from these reset attacks while the opponenet is crumbling after a FA?

Also, noobish question, but what’s an option select?

Next time just edit your second question into your first post please. If they’re like a day apart that’s fine but if they’re 2 minutes apart you should just combine the posts.

Damage scaling in SF4 can make long combos do very little damage by the end. The reset restarts damage scaling. A good reset should dramatically increase the damage you get from a situation.

If you’re going to do a cross-up from air-to-air you might as well just dash when you land. Dudley’s dash is 3 frames faster than the fastest ducking and you get piddly meter gain from doing an empty duck-in.

Is cr mp a better option just because of the damage it deals or are you referring to it as an anti air? just wondering because i’ve been using cr lp or cr lk because i dont know if there is a certain timing that causes cr mp to cross up or not to cross up when cancelled into ducking.

My mistake, will make sure to edit it next time

And cheers for the answer, and for that site as well, it explains alot of SF stuff!

No because in a reset sitution like that nothing is doing damage, you should only be reseting after a stun if you’ve stunned them with a long combo (ie cr.jab x 2, st.rh xx ex mgb, ducking upper) if that stuns then follow up combo will do no damage. So go for some dumb reset or go for a throw to setup your safe jump (this is my opinion not fact) Cr.mp is the best option because on some characters with the right timing you can make it look like you will cross up and then not, or make it look like you wont’ cross up and then you will. I like to use cr.lk because I know where I am going to be and its a fast reset harder to react to.

Ok question. Right now I have a very basic Dudley. I use just one combo which is c.LP c.LP s.HK xx (ex sometimes) MGB. Should I end that combo with anything else? I am learning the timing for the follow up for EX MGB but the timing is still confusing for me. Besides that I need some good mixups to get the opponent guessing. I see the overhead combos and the punishers so I’m going to practice those. Also what are good normals with high priority to do on my opponents wake up so I can interrupt what they are doing?

Yes, hp jet upper or lp > hp upper, lp jet upper > lp mgb… hp mbg is ok, I think, sets for a kara throw, but those are way more powerful non ex meter versions of that combo, plus the knockdown ofc, for normals on their wakeup, meaty overhead, and c.lk c.lp, you may use meaty c.hk too, but it’s more dangerous than c.lk, ex mgb follow is ducking straight on the center of the screen (some characters are harder to pull it, some others like balrog it’s always a free combo, ducking straight > lp mgb… ducking straight > hp jet upper > ex mbg 2x c.hk on corner) and ducking upper if it will get the other player on the corner (like a dash and a half from the corner)
