Dual Analogue Setup

I’m really sorry to post about a non-fighting game question, but I cannot find anywhere else to go. I am interested in creating a small housing for two Sanwas to control the two analogue sticks on a ps1/ps2 controller. I have done alot of searching, especially around this forum, before creating this thread, and I was hoping someone may be able to help me out. The purpose of this project is to create an arcade stick setup that will allow me to play Katamari Damacy on the ps2, and hook up to a ps2 -> usb converter to play Smash TV.

I have been reading slagcoin’s excellent guide, and it appears that you can wire up a 4-way stick to the analogue spots on the pcb, but I am wondering if this will even be worth it for Katamari Damacy?? Since the controls won’t be analogue, it might make the control really crappy and pretty much make the controller worthless (except for Smash TV, where it will be leet as fuck). For those of you that have never played the game I am referring to, it sometimes requires a delicate touch only an emulated analogue playstation controller could provide! But I am still tempted to wire it up and try it out.

What do you think? Is this even worth the pain in the ass of modding a ps1 dual shock or should I just do something vastly easier and mod the normal controls of the ps1 to the sticks?!?

I’m really interested in this, and I once again apologize for posting in here. If anyone knows of a more relevant forum, I would be very delighted to check it out :]

Katamari Damacy was on the PSP and was still playable, even though the controls were fully digital.

You could probably get this to work, though it would be weird… you might instinctively push the stick slightly and expect to get slight movement, and nothing would come out because you’re still in deadzone (though I guess you could remedy this by just getting a stick without little/no deadzone).

You might want to make sure you can still dash with digital sticks before you do anything. The game might be expecting to see a smooth motion from down to up and intrepret that as a dash and you would only be able to give down, neutral, up.

A trackball would probably be better for KD, but worse for Smash TV.

dual trackball would be amazing, thanks for the thought! I am not opposed to having more specific shit sitting in my closet for the once a year use

The concept on this sounds really damned cool. You shouldn’t apologize for the post. I can’t recall anyone having wired the analog sticks for input. That’s probably because the dpad doesn’t require any additional work. I’d recommend posting in this thread in hopes that one of our brains like Toodles can help you out.

There are a few commercially made ‘twin sticks.’ I don’t know if these could work with Katamari but it’s a thought. I still want one of these for Virtual On.

Your best bet for re-wiring analog sticks would be to check the analog trigger hack pad threads.

Check out the link. Now it’s not exactly a ps1 dual analog controller, but the information there should be helpful for what you are trying to do. Just remember that each analog joystick has two potentiometers - one for up/down, a second for left/right.

Good luck.
