Dreamwave is closing, so i Have a question for you Mr.Udoneko:

I’m not sure how the comic biz works, but can u tell me if this means they no longer hold the capcom licensed to Megman and Devil May Cry? I can’t ask at the dreamwave website because its no longer available. Please answer Udoneko or anyone else.

thank u :karate:

Both titles had underwhelming sales, from what ive heard, and the DMC license supposedly cost a LOT of money, so i dont think Udon getting them would be a good idea. Sales would still be low, Udon would lose money and cancel it just the same.

In the case of Megaman you could say it sold bad because it was just a shitty comic, but the DMC one looked fantastic (no idea about the writing, never read it) and still… nobody cared.

The writing was OK, Dante was way to talkative. He’d have legnthy conversations with himself and demons who can’t talk back. It’s like they’ve never heard of thought balloons. In one Issue he spoke more than he ever has in both DMC Games.

Other than that, the fight with Phantom when he chopped his insides after being swallowed and match #2 where he shot all his eyes was really cool. Just wasn’t the one liner spitting Dante we all know and love.

Megaman was just crap.

DW also did a Maximo story that was average. Not great, but not crap. It was certainly better than Mega Man (it was a decent idea to bring in Spaziante for issue 4 but that was too little WAY too late).

Heh heh. I remember Dreamwave’s treatment for Darkstalkers. They wanted to make Morrigan and Lilith Vampires trying to get a book to enter the human world. I thank my lucky stars that never happened and Udon is doing Darkstalkers.

I honestly do not have the answer to that. We have pur hands full with SF & DS, and once we gain more grounds on these 2 books, the next one on our Capcom list is Rival Schools.

At this point, we have no plans on tackling other Capcom licenses.

I think it’s best that you guys stick with just these fighting liscenses you already have now. Establish them, get them going for a while, and then, if you feel it’s right, consider some other liscenses. You guys are definitely doing right by sticking with SF, DS, and RS for now.

You know, as much as I love Rival Schools, if I were you, I’d skip RS and do a Mega Man book.

It’d sell more. More people know the Blue Bomber & Dr. Wily than Batsu or Akira.

Capcom is still making new Mega Man games. Okay, so the last “Mega Man” game was Megaman & Bass, but there’s Mega Man X, Mega Man Zero, and Mega Man Battle Network to go with. The last RS game was Project Justice back in 1999…

More characters and story to work with. 9 canon Mega Man games, 3 Mega Man Legends games, 8 Mega Man X games, 3 Mega Man Zero games, God knows how many Mega-Pokmon, I mean Battle Network games there are…

At least get the rights to MM before someone else picks it up and makes another shitfest…

You know I bet you out of all the franchises Capcom owns, the most successful are Resident Evil and probably Devil May Cry (Not including Street Fighter in this anyway), kind of seems logical to try one of those before Megaman or Rival School, though fighting games has been the tradition for Udon, thus Rival Schools imo.

Well, no matter what we’re never going to be able to get around the underlying fact that not many people know what Darkstalkers is outside the fighting game community.
I don’t think ANYONE really knows what Rival Schools is. Hell, I’ve never even seen in game shots of it and the first I ever saw of it’s existance was from Capcom Design Works.

I’m afraid the sad fact is that sales are low on DS and are going to be even lower on Rival Schools, due to the obscuratey of the products.
You’re catering to a very small audience and it’s shrinking with each new title. The only way this will change is if you take it to it’s target audience. Also, heavy promotion is needed to get it out there to others outside the gaming community.

I love Megaman. Before I was a Street Fighter fanatic I was a Megaman Fanatic. This lasted all through High School.

But, I’ve already tasted Rival Schools in the Summer Special and heck, I want more!

For my Megaman fix, I’ll just buy the Megaman NT Warrior Manga from Viz. Not to mention continue playing Megaman Anniversary Edition, Megaman and Bass, Megaman Zero 2, while still having to purchase at a later date Megaman Battle Network 2-5, Megaman Anniversary on the GBA, Megaman X 8, Megaman Command Mission and Megaman Zero 3… yikes, I wish Capcom would take a break from making Megaman games…

I do like RS, and think its got the most potential out of the three Udon series (it has that “tv series/soap opera” thing going, and the designs are the best out of the three series too). But i have to agree with Apathy. NOBODY knows Rival Schools - most fighting fans at least know Darkstalkers, but RS?

Add the fact the art and narrative in the Summer Special RS story were pretty underwhelming (some of the panel-to-panel transitions in that simply did not make sense), and i think it wont sell that well. All (or at least most) people here will get it, but thats not enough, i think… Even if Sakura and Dan were regulars, i dont think many SF readers would buy it.

Udon should just make RS the back-up in both SF and DS or something. Six pages in each comic or something… But i know most people would complain about the lack of SFers in the SF back-up…

Erik try to get Ramil Sunga, his coloring fits perfectly with Alvin Lee’s Pencils

Thank u Udoneko for answering back. The current titles u have now are good enough for me. As anything we should consider the closing as a good example of “too much of a good thing”. :karate: Too much of one license can overshadow the original, and that’s sad when that happens

I’m glad that Udon isn’t doing too may titles and head the way of the dinosaur. (imagine a Sf2, SF alpha, SF3, etc. that would be too much)

I’m gonna miss my G1 Transfomers comic BTW, anybody else?

It’s not only obscurity. I’m a big Dark Stalkers fan, but due to the look of the art and scripting I haven’t been tempted to buy the comic.
So imagine how hard it would be to sell to people that aren’t Darkstalkers fans.

Ick, I didn’t know that was DW’s plan for DS… but it doesn’t surprise me.

Maximo was likable. I’d like to try the games now to see if they at least kept true to something ONCE in their short lifespan as a company.

DMC was boring to me. I’ve got issue #3 on hold for some time now at the shop. I may just not bother. Depends how the shop owner feels, I may buy it out of obligation someday.

Mega Man has tremendous potential, even with what’s already been done, but what HAS been done is pretty crappy, most agree. Spaz would’ve been a lifesaver, but came in too late. I’m sure if he’d at least been drawing it since issue one, sales MIGHT have been high enough to keep going. As it is, seems that it’s poisoned goods and no one wants it now.

RS I look forward to, though I too question its ability to stand on its own. DS seems stronger, due to more games and US presence, but SF is king. Maybe if the latter two releases don’t work out, Udon might give MM a try…?

Can you get an exchange on licenses? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

“Yes, I’m not satisfied with this license…”

“No refunds.”

“…then could I at least exchange it for another one?”

“Sure, but you’ll have to pay the difference.”

…anyway. Don’t expect BN/NT Warrior to be done beyond the manga anytime soon, as that MegaMan is a completely seperate timeline and license from the other four. Which in some ways is sad, as it’s being raped like… well, I won’t get into descriptions here.

Best option to me, though, might be to test the waters by finishing that X/Mega Man team-up from the end of issue 4, and if that goes well, then perhaps do a MMX comic with an original series back-up story in each issue.

To the person who said too many MM games: I partly agree. It’s my favorite series, but I wish they’d give MMBN a rest and maybe release a new MMClassic game or a new Legends. X is a seperate development team, so is Zero, at least in part, so no biggie there.

But MMC, MML, and MMBN all share the same team, and it’s starting to show in the games that they seem to be tiring. I think a break to do a different game might help energize them in the ideas department. I’m sure a ton have been building in the meantime, anyway.

However, MMBN is THE big moneymaker for Capcom right now, so it makes sense they’re slavedriving CPS2 for more titles all the time… but on the bright side, I do believe series creator and Capcom bigwig Keiji Inafune did say that the more money BN makes, the more they’ll be able to do once the original and Legends are done with their “breaks.”
