Dream of becoming Pro in Fighting Games

Yeah fuck what the OP and what he was talking about. lets turn this thread into a discussion about aspiring to be a pro gamer in the FGC or pro gaming in general. The highs and lows, what it takes, is it worth it? Etc. Since the OP is pretty much gone for good. Lets see if we can get a mod to rename the thread. How does “So you want to be a pro fighting game player huh?” Sound? Or “What the competitive side of the FGC is really like” Those with first hand experience of high level tourney play, how they got there etc. What tghey excperinced etc. Are welcome to contribute.

I read the first 2 pages and the last page of the topic, and that seems to be mostly what it’s about. Why would we need to change the name of the topic? Why “fuck” the op?

Yeah you got a point. And I guess dissing the OP was unnecessary. But I still think a change of the title thread would be in order. It seems more campy instead of a dose of reality.

Honestly, unless anyone can come up with a good reason to keep this open, I think its time has passed. The conversation has moved out of the scope of the newbie dojo.

That’s what the other guy and I are saying. This thread was originally dumb. But it has grown into a much more deep and interesting discussion about what it’s reall like to be a pro fighting game player. What goes into it. The ups and downs etc. I think this thread should be moved to Fighting Game Discussion and renamed. Or maybe open a new thread for this topic if it don’t already exist.

I’ve always found this discussion fascinating, or more accurately, hilarious.
Over the years I’ve seen countless of dudes waste a good chunk of their lives believing they’ll be big time youtubers or streamers, become pro-gamers or write for their favorite website.
The reality is that quite literally everyone who goes into that venture hoping to turn it into a career grossly underestimates the amount of work that goes into this.

I could quite possibly talk for hours and hours on end on this matter but to avoid a wall of text I’ll just say 2 things.

  1. When you come across someone who is actually delusional enough to have this as their life goal then by all means encourage them as much as you can.
Because someone who thinks this is a totally reasonable career path to pursue is too far gone to be reasoned with so all you can do is get their hopes up so that when they realize it’s not going to work reality slaps them in the face not with a fist but with a 10 ton hammer.
I know it sounds really mean but idiots only listen to themselves which is why the best thing you can do is literally set them up for failure.

  2. Pro-gamers as well as entertainers (youtubers & streamers) are almost all on borrowed time.
There are very few who actually make enough money to be somewhat fine for the rest of their lives.
The thing that I love about these streamers in particular (especially those wretched titties-streamers) is that they are actively ruining their future 1 day at a time.
Sure, they might get 100$ donations like it’s nothing but that’s not going to last…
Eventually it’s going to end and it’ll be time to look for a job like everyone else.

Now here’s the funny bit.

I’ve known wannabe streamers and youtubers drop out of school to pursue this ridiculous fantasy…
Imagine these people applying for a job… just for a moment, put yourselves in the shoes of an employer.
‘Oh, so you’re in your 20s, never had a stable and all you’ve done in life so far is play video games on the internet…?’

Yep, top notch applicant right there.

Pretty much everyone who has a job in the gaming industry as players or entertainers will tell you they ended up there by sheer luck.
And the ones who ‘made it’ by actively pursuing their dream will be so frightened to let go that they end up vanishing into irrelevance after a depressing spiral downwards.

TL;DR
Yup, drop out of school right now and chase your dreams my young one
Nothing bad will come of it! for realzies B)

Yes and no. Any professional athlete or musician or actor can “Make it” without being the the best if the best as long as they see the gaming aspect at part 1 of a multi-step plan to be financially independant. The goal should be to take what you are earning as the player and turn that into assets. Did you win $2k at a midlevel Steet Fighter tournament like Youmacon? That is 20% down on a $10,000 piece of property that you can rent out or something. That house will keep bringing you rental income even if you lose tge next tournament.

Do they not give aptitude tests in high schools anymore?

Dafuq happened to this world?

That’s $2000 that you can invest into a stock portfolio, and make some $$$ off of dividends. US Bank pays 2.4% dividends quarterly. Thats around 100 dollars a year for winning at Youmacon, along with $2000 (Or potentially more) that you can pull out on a rainy day.

20 years and you’ll double your winnings, not including any capital gains you may get by selling off your stock when it’s high. FGC gotta start getting in the investing game bruh. Turn your fight money into retirement money, or end up like Balrog.

I personally would like this thread to stay in the newbie dojo. A lot of newcomers, esp once SFV comes out, would check out this place first. Have this thread stickied or something. I think this is a pretty good message to give to them

Well If one is purely living off fight money. A portion of that 2k has to go to living expenses. But I get your overall point and it’s a good one. Hell 10k is all it cost to buy some property? With the new job I’ll be working and the money I’ll be making. I’m gonna save up 10k and look into that. I want that passive income.

did this scrubvirgin stop dreaming?

STOP IT

There are some things I’d really love to do in life. I want to be a world-class jazz musician, make meaningful contributions in artificial intelligence, become an EVO contender, learn to speak Chinese fluently, be exceptionally well read. These are all things that would be extremely fun or interesting to me but do not provide immediate financial reward.

I think it is in fact possible to achieve at least some lofty goals of this sort without relying on the good will of family. You have to make yourself completely financially independent so that you can spend 100% of your time doing whatever the fuck you want. That is task #1.

This is why I spend almost all of my free time building commercial apps, so that I will eventually not need a regular job.

Where the hell are you getting property for 10k?

@Hanako. You still around. Would love to know how this turned out. Without sounding like a dick. Because I really don’t mean too. But have you gone to any offline gatherings or tournaments yet in the last 7 months. If you want to be pro it just takes effort. Put it in and baam. Daigo.

Of course there is more to it than the gaming. What is the point of being pro for you. Do you want to win cash and live. Or do you want to be famous. If its the winning cash thing then you don’t need to worry about all the big time tournaments. Just play local meets with a prize pool. You will find lots of noobs showing up looking to gain experience. You can walk your way through them and get tramped when you get to the better guys. But chances are you will get some cash out of it. As long as you put in a bit of the fore mentioned effort. Pro is just professional, all it means is you get paid to do a job. And if you do a shit job but still get paid, well then you’r still a pro, just a shit one.

If its the fame you want, then that’s actually harder. Jump on Youtube and look and the thousands of clowns with their own channels. Sift through them and find the ones you enjoy watching. Sift through that and find the ones with a decent level of production. Sift through that and find how many compose themselves like serious adults with a message worth hearing. Then try and imitate them. If you feel like a right knob doing that and you would rather act retarded making funny voices and lame jokes. Then you wont get the fame.

People want to see real people. People they can relate too. You need to make sure you are relateable to a broad audience. And not a bunch of whinny lame ass teens swearing and being tossers. If your goal is to be sponsored, then your image needs to be something they can sell, and you need to be a decent gamer. But being sponsored isn’t everything.

The OP hasn’t been here in five months. You can see by looking at his profile.

Closing.

RIP to user Hanako, their failure to become a pro fighting game player is honored by their lack of posts which show that he was just like Zoro after watching the one piece episode that inspired him to make this entire thread. He was willing to become the best or die trying. Please take a moment of silence to give respect to Hanako, who obviously let himself die before failing to become the best, because if he didn’t this would be the greatest humiliation of his entire life.
