I do get where she’s coming from. I would agree with you if it stopped at the amazon and sorceress, but some of the NPCs are a bit wtf. Like the nun with her legs spread wide open. Though she seemed to dock way too many points for just not liking the art style. She actually praises the combat in the review which seems weird imo since a beat’em ups greatest strength should be it’s combat.
Edit: Watching the Rev3 stream they made a comment that Dragon’s Crown is “Heavy Metal the game” which is a good point. You can’t take this shit seriously.
No I see your point too Tetsuro, when I saw the spread eagle nun I was like “wtf”. There are definitely some of those moments in there, I’m just saying bashing the player characters(yet completely ignoring the males or making some bullshit justification like “muscles aren’t meant to be sexually attractive”) is horseshit. The problems with the npcs are another thing
Also when I see outlandish comments like these I literally want to ring some of these chivalrists/feminists fucking necks,
Yeah, the nun image gave me pause. There’s no reason for it.
The problem I have with the Polygon review is that you knew what was coming since it was written by a woman. It’s almost like Polygon wanted to invite controversy. It’s like a black man reviewing a game where you play as a KKK member and the objective is to lynch black people. Clearly, they’re going to be offended, and that’s going to factor into the review, no matter how good the gameplay is.
Do people not understand that the art is about exaggeration? Barring the nun, everything seems okay. Every character is strong, beautiful, sexy, etc…
The player characters, for me, are amazingly diverse in design. From J-cups to body building bomb shells; bishis to bears. This game is absolutely fabulous. To think any less of it is something I smply cannot condone of.
I do think saying “the game over sexualizes women” holds some weight, although docking the game that much (on top of gameplay complaints) seems excessive. Someone on Twitter did bring up a good point that the males in the game are part of a male power fantasy rather than being eye candy for females, however, I do think if gender roles were reversed and the men were predominantly over sexualized compared to females in the game, no one would really care, or the outcry would be much softer. I don’t think Polygon made the review in order to link bait either.
I do feel it’s kind of sad that a game’s art style gets more talk than its actual gameplay merits.
So I just read somewhere that all online features are locked until you put 4-5 hours into the game. On top of that, you have to do this for every character class in the game. If this is true, then may I ask, what in the mother of fuck is this shit?
If I had pre-ordered this, I’d be pissed right about now
I changed my mind from my reservations earlier though, just for that hate crime sensationalism I’ll be buying the game day fucking one. If I could buy 10 million copies of it I would.
edit: Spirit Juice, are you seriously saying that there aren’t women who fantasize/are aroused by powerful virile men?(Whether that power is displayed through physicality or social/economic power). If so I got news for you; look up something called female hypergamy.
It’s the horseshit feminist option select where half naked muscular men aren’t attractive or ‘over the line’, but every man is automatically attracted to a tit cow or a woman with thighs the size of her torso. There is no merit to the oversexualization of women solely, or at all barring the nun thing that I saw. So the fact that people will bitch about women being oppressed sexually in the same breath as complaining about a fictional girl being alluring is all kinds of retarded. If all of the women were ugly or flatchested, the game would be called misogynistic or ‘just another pedophile game from Japan’.
As somebody attracted to men, I have plenty to look at in this game, but none of them screamed ‘please fuck me I am a gigantic dick lord’. They were just appealing character designs, whether they were female or male.
I’m not saying that at all. Reread my post and think about the target audience for the game. That said, however, I think complaining about the art as if it’s ruining society is very petty and those kind of people need to shut up. In any case, if the sexism talk about Dragon’s Crown continues it should be in the “feminist gaming” thread.
Fuck man this game can’t come out any slower. All this talk, controversial or not, makes me want to play it even more ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
Keep all of the berating feminism, and all of its misandry, both the blatantly overt kind, and thinly veiled passive-aggressive bullshit in the above quoted, the fuck out of our Dragon’s Crown thread.
