It doesn’t help that Muramasas translation was completely botched and simplified from the original script. Muramasa is just as well written as Odin Sphere, but it’s translation job was completely shit, unlike Odin Sphere. I really liked Muramasa as well, but i liked Odin Sphere better because each character had their own style of play.
Yup. And say what you want about the repetition in Odin Sphere, but the length of the game was just right for giving it that “epic” feel, and worked well for developing the intertwined plots. I went into Muramasa expecting the same thing, so I was a little disappointed with how comparatively unambitious it was (both in plot and gameplay).
Though, some of the boss fights were pretty fun.
Odin Sphere to me is an example of a work that is very flawed objectively, but has some subjective elements about it that are very powerful.
Also I should have said this earlier but
To be fair, even if the game turned out to be your cup of tea, 25 minutes isn’t enough. That’s barely out of the tutorial stage! The game gets a lot more interesting once the difficulty spike kicks in, which is not too far in. Just up to the snow mountain (chapter 3 of the first story).
Totally agreed. Cornelius is the absolute best part of the game both story and gameplay wise. He’s the single most likable character with the most engrossing storyline, and is also mad fun to play as and gets to fight some of the best bosses.
The Vita version is getting a new translation. If I ever own a Vita I’ll pick it up cuz I like Kamatani’s writing. It’s cool it’s getting 3 new characters. Here’s hoping they have unique styles of play.
This is understandable. I gave Demons Souls two hours, twice, and i wasn’t having fun so I stopped playing. I will say tho that some of my favorite games ever started slow and where stuff I went back to to give another shot. I got stuck in Dortor in FFT, right at the beginning for like two days and eventually said fuck it. Came back a year later started a new game, accepted i have to grind a little and FFT is easily in my top 3 for FF titles.
So I understand quiting something cuz it’s not fun right up front…but I also understand something taking time to get started, and I don’t think that it starting slow means it’s a bad game either. To me that’s more of a “It wasn’t for me” situation (the stance I take with Demons Souls) then claiming it was a shitty product.
I reserve the term “Bad game” for actual bad games…like Skyrim or something.
But this is an rpg. An action rpg, yes. But still a genre in which the opening which establishes the plot and gameplay can be an hour or more. Heck, you don’t even get to the tutorial battle in Persona 4 until at least 30 minutes in, let alone the first dungeon.
I understand where your coming from. Sometimes these games do hook you in the first minute through story/gameplay. And sometimes it just doesn’t speak to you at first. It’s just one of those subjective elements, but for an rpg I don’t think it counts as bad game design to have a slower paced opening that establishes world/atmosphere/gameplay.
But regardless, like I said I can understand not seeing the appeal in Odin Sphere. It’s an objectively flawed game but with some very endearing subjective elements.
A 360 release would be a loss anyways; console is pretty much dead in Japan.
About Odin Sphere: funny enough, Cornelius was my least favorite part about the game. I thought his character was too one dimensional and uninteresting. His spells and gameplay were probably the least interesting to me. Being a furry didn’t help either.
Simple fact is if they are localizing it why not put it on as many consoles in the states as possible? No one even brought up the jap market except for your japan loving ass, Spiritfag.
Japanese company that mainly focuses on the Japanese market (similar to why BlazBlue Chrono Phantasm won’t get a 360 port). I highly doubt it’s cost effective to port Dragon’s Crown to both systems considering how 360 is dead in Japan and the market is very niche in the US. Atlus may fund a dual-platform port for the US market, but who knows if it will make a profit if they do. Point being, I don’t think it’s unreasonable not to have a 360 version.
